Given the debates about the Chantry's role in the fall of the Dales and over the lives of mages in Andrastian society, I was wondering if it might be possible to oppose the Chantry of Andraste in Inquisition. Some view the Chantry with disdain over their actions, and believe the organization should be opposed. Not everyone thinks Divine Justina V is altruistic as the leader of the Chantry. I think it would be preferable to have a choice in the matter, rather than being forced to be pro-Chantry.

Mere speculation at the moment, but I think opposing the Chantry should be a valid option.

Yes and no. I think it'll be possible to take Anti-Chantry stances, but considering the Chantry doesn't even have an army, and that the main focus of the game does not appear to be choosing templars vs mages, I doubt launching war against the Chantry will be an option.

I hope so; options are always nice. I also hope the only reason to do it isn't just "for the mages!" One of the reason I like New Vegas was there was an option to support no one except yourself.

David Gaider said we won't be going on any anti-chantry crusade any time soon.

I'm not sure we can directly "oppose" the chantry, but I think, and hope, that we at least can just not support them.

I think it's kind of unfortunate. I wanted the option to either give Thedas to the mages or take it for myself. (I would do at least one playthrough of each.)

I would just be happy to have the option to get things back to how they was but with a few changes and a bit more freedom for mages once they took the harrowing.

Is there a source for Gaider's comment? I'll be pretty happy about it if it's true.

I've not kept updated on the lore of Dragon Age but it sounds to me like the Inquisitors should be a power set apart from the Chantry, something of a neutral third party in this struggle of mages vs. templars. That would definitely make the story more interesting exploring the dynamics between these three groups.

I'm hoping I can oppose everyone, Chantry included.

I don't know too much about this "Inquisitor" (haven't been keeping up with the bits of info that have been teased), what kind of authroity do they derive?

At the most you can have different views on how the Chantry should move forward and change. But you won't be able to forsake your religion.

Opposing the chantry would be heresy so I hope not.

Technically not, since we're not Thedosian. :innocent:

I didn't mean the Inquisitor. He/she would totally be a heretic. We wouldn't, though.

And as stated above, I want the option anyway.

no source just my personal opinion, But imo playing a game where you can't question your higher ups is just silly and pointless. (not saying that is the case i'm just speculating )

After the Tevinter Imperium got mauled by the First Blight and before the Chantry and the Circle of Magi, the Inquisition was an order dedicated to protecting Thedas from blood mages and abominations.  They went on to join the Chantry as the Templars and the Seekers of Truth under the Nevaran Accord in 1:20 Divine.

I'm guessing this means we'll be playing a Seeker, since they haven't broken away from the Chantry.  Seekers are drawn from the Templars, but answer directly to the Divine.  They have a mandate to root out corruption and protect the Chantry from both internal and external threats.

Edit:  now that I think about it, we may not necessarilly be a Seeker, as that would make playing a mage...problematic :D
