What do you want to do with your castle?

It would also be nice if you could utilize "junk" loot items for weapon/armor-smithing...pelts or ores, for example.
I also love the ME2 & ME3 souvenirs you could pick up along your adventures - whether they're tied to a particular quest (we have a mounted head of a High Dragon in our house after defeating it) or something you purchase via a shopkeeper (paintings, vases w/ flowers, etc).

I love it when games allow you to make your dwelling your own. Having an actual forge, and the ability to create or destroy items (for the castle, or otherwise) would be pretty awesome.

I wouldn't want to fully decorate it like a sims thing or anything, but the ability to add a picture or a statute from a quest or a special item from a vendor. In a very limited fashion would be cool.

Some sort of economy minigame
Host political dignitaries from foreign lands to forge alliances, etc...

The latter would make the game a bunch more replayable. I've gotten pretty bored of the same old camp in my time playing Origins, which otherwise allows a whole lot of variety in playthroughs. (Race options, character appearance, specs, equipment allotments, etc.)

When I started here, all there was was swamp. Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So, I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one... stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the strongest castle in these islands.

The problem with this arrangement is that castles were usually built to guard a village, with the idea being that the peasants give food to feed the lord's soldiers and the lord himself. The lord also took extra to fill his granaries if he has to hole up in there, since not only would he have to feed himself and his soldiers, but the peasants would be in there hiding from whoever's trying to harm their lord. (Killing a lord's peasants would ruin him, so any enemy peasants caught would probably be killed as an economic attack.) But how would peasants farm in a swamp to any extent that can support their lord and his rainy-day-fund? (Peasant hunting was strongly curbed, since the lords tried to keep most of the game for themselves.)
Then there's the problem you already mentioned, of course.

Anyway a castle that I can build up from a piece of crap to something truly magnificent, organizing "every day" stuff like patrols and trade routes, my companions making requests for specific features and making comments on changes, the ability to lose the castle either through a battle or through being outsmarted/betrayed and winning the castle either through a battle or through cunning. All this would make me happy as aforementioned clam.
A bit off topic but what I'd really like to see in DA3 is the ability to outsmart the bad guys instead of just killing them. Or outsmarting them AND killing them. Or killing them BY outsmarting them. Like more options in dialogue to manipulate someone or interacting with their diaries and using the info as blackmail, things like that.

i seem to remember someone saying we might have to take it to get it. like, combat wise. (or am i getting confused again?)
IF that's the case...
just gazing at the art again, it looks as though that might be an extraordinarily difficult task! both the terrain around it and the bridge make it look pretty defensible. difficult to attack well, and very tricky to sneak into as well. of course, it looks as though a long siege could easily take care of that, given that it would be difficult to supply properly. but, in general, HOLDING a castle is always easier than TAKING one.
not that it wouldn't be worth the effort! especially if someone tells us to "have fun storming the castle." always a classic!

Sorry, I can't help it, but you reminded me of this Should be taken as DA3 intro movie and caslte feature promo.Well, a castle surrounded by swamp could be pretty hard to beat: the usual medieval strategy for fortresses was to surround them until they starve, since getting through stone was somewhat difficult without cruise missles. Yeah, it could be done, but waiting until they starve is pretty low effort, plus less expensive to rebuild if you intend to take possession of it. The problem with camping around a swamp castle is that the environment will make you inanely uncomfortable. If this is too much effort, I suppose an enemy could knock the castle down... by bringing his various weapons designed for the purpose through the )#*@)ing swamp.

Horrible image of castle.
Does this please you?
What are you hoping to see?
I'd like something like NWN 2's upgrade system or BG II's strongholds. I'd also like the castle to reflect your class.

Perfect image of castle:
From the BioWare blog on Inquistion concept art.
I'd like something akin to Suikoden IV/Assassin's Creed 2/better Vigil's Keep/what I posted that Soldier's Peak should've been.
I'd like to be able to get a Dwarven Blacksmith at the Castle, a Doctor, some Enchanters, etc. It could serve as the place where we craft things. We gather the supplies together and bring them to the appropriate people, and some of these supplies could be done DAII style where you see people working to gather them.
Example: I find a lyrium node and collect it. I can then return to this area a few quests later and see Dwarves mining it, singing "Heigh-Ho!" in the process.

I actually wish Soldier's Peak had been renovated and we could explore it.
Were it me, I would've made it so the player had a new base they could explore anytime they were there. The player would always have the Camp and if they went to Soldier's Peak all of the companions would be doing their own thing:
Wynne and Morrigan would be in the library reading books
Alistair, Dog, and Oghren would be in the kitchen
Sten would be on the bridge overlooking the mountain, staring off into the horizon
Leliana would be practicing Archery while also singing
Zevran would be..... Zevran!
Shale would be chasing the birds
And Loghain would be in another room looking over old maps.
The PC -- who is effectively the Warden Commander -- would have Sophia Dryden's office become his office. At least until Amaranthine
I would've also allowed the player to send certain people there to become Wardens. If Jowan could've been recruited like it was originally intended, he would be made a Warden there. Even if he couldn't be a party member, that doesn't mean he can't be a Warden. Then there's also that Dwarf in Orzammar that the player can recruit, though nothing came of it.
Levi and Mikhael would be there still, and the player could even upgrade the base however they wanted. This way, the Warden makes a Warden outpost that has fallen into disrepair usable again.

This is Dragon Age. What you deserve and what you get have at best a passing correlation, or less than that if you're a PC.
