You might have more luck offering them male kossith. Everyone loves handlebars.

I would like to have full access to the castle.  I was very disappointed we had limited access to the Warden's keep after the quest, the castle in Awakening, and Hawke's estate.

I kept thinking in DA:O that all those vases and rugs we found on quests would have been great to decorate the keep with or trade to the merchants who moved in, for services rendered (fix the broken furniture).  Then in DA:A we go through a wonderful castle but are only able to access ONE room after we take over.  Handling issues was fun and having our trophies displayed was nice but I wanted more.  I wanted to have to search out my companions such as finding Oghren drunk in the mess hall or killing daisies in the courtyard.  I wanted to see the improvements I was paying for in the background (in progress - i.e. seeing dwarfs building a wall).  To be able to interact (help, quest for) with the staff and residents.  After meeting everyone in the noble's origin storyline I was more invested in the game when the slaughter came, not so with Arl Eamon's manor in Denerim.  I just know that maid in the hall had a storyline that had been cut.

Then in DA2 we dealt with a ten year span in which our home never changed and was very limited in access.  The interactions with our companions was nice, but should have been more.  I would have loved to woken up to Isabela going thru my stuff or finding Anders bathing.  Having Varric over for dinner or practicing sword fighting with Fenris on the roof/courtyard.  It is these slices of life that make a story "real" to the player and increase it's replayability ...so if the castle is going to be the new camp party area, have both interactions and "moments" that take place in more than one location.  I would love my companions to have their own room that changes as they do during the progression of the game.  My own location having the same ability.

Also have our reputation affect our access to merchants (only within our own castle).  Great rep gives us bigger and better skilled laborers  and merchants who want to move in.  Bad reputation increase in pricing and limited or shady merchants.  I like how the upgrades for our companions in DA2 were spread out among the merchants so we had to visit each one to ensure we got everything.  I missed so much in my "blind" play-thru.  It made playing again enjoyable because I was still finding something new.  Kind of how in BG2 different things happened depending on the class you choose.

....and if there must be a brothel have it services everyone's needs.  I would have gotten a kick outta having Isabela setting up your brother in DA2.Image IPBImage IPB

I love many of the ideas presented so far. I think customization is the key. Here are some of my ideas that may overlap.

I love the idea of having a smithing area where I can craft my own personalized set of armor and weapons. A place where all kinds of metals I have collected can be taken and customized into a weapon/armor that matches the personality of the character I am playing. And what if armor and weapons can wear out or rust? I can bring it here to sharpen them up or fix them.

I would love to have a special room where I can create my own spells. I loved this option in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I once made a spell that allowed me to jump 100 feet in the air. It rocked! I could scale walls in a flash. Creating my own spells, customizing my staff, and personalizing my own set of robes. Sweetness.

Why not include a big old gladiator-like stadium with the castle? This was such a cool feature in Elder Scrolls IV. Completely missed it in Skyrim. It would totally rock.

Alchemy lab would be awesome. Why not a garden where I can grow my own ingredients?

I would love a museum section. The museum in a Mass Effect 2 dlc with Kasumi was pretty cool. It would be neat to display different weapons and armor and other items of interest I have found on my journeys and put them in a cool looking museum. I do enjoy doing this in Skyrim.

Having your own butler because that rocks. Especially if he is witty and sarcastic, but gets things done. Would love to pull practical jokes on my companions in the castle.

I like the Mabari dogs...but I love Great Danes. How about different dog breeds? And a big old dog house to let him sleep in. Next to my stable of horses. And my chicken pen/cattle for my kitchen staff.

Obviously, being able to customize the castle itself would be awesome. If you're evil, it can look sinister. Good looks magnificent. Grey looks like the batcave. I mean, let my character's personality and choices have real effects on the place.

Training my own little army would be cool. Make sure the castle appears alive and not vacant. Let people move around in the place. Give it life.

Side note: I hope DAI has weather effects/day & night cycle. And I hope it affects combat. Make night time a scary place. Maybe a powerful snowstorm drains stamina. A mighty, windy rainstorm decreases my arrow accuracy. A living, breathing world, where really, the world itself is treated as a character. Atmosphere is so important. That would be cool.

And yea, everything everyone else already said. haha.

I like the idea of having a beautiful garden in the castle, somewhere you can talk with your companions, a place that is relaxing and quiet. It would be the perfect place to keep herbs for crafting or healing.

I'd like to see a great siege of the castle, no matter who's gonna take the castle under control - us or enemy.

Like, boom-boom-kaboom! Chief orc givin an order to start firing, minion orc yellin "Catapult!", then Rohan bros showin up, like, "WAZZUP!" and then da giant elephants crushin Rohan bros, and all that stuff.
And then Cassandra's takin the helmet off, like, "I am no man!" - and skadooshing the Pride demon.
And then the whole party are, like, "Yeah, we did it!", "Cassandra for president!", "Let's dance!".
And then dances are coming.

I actually dont care about having my own castle - reminds me of Fable or Skyrim. The only thing I would use a castle for is to keep extra junk - basically storage.

You just force everyone to pitch a tent in the biggest part of the castle and abandon all other rooms to the spiders?

My PC is gonna be a privileged human noble and a blunt mage. My castle is gonna be really awesome. There's gonna be lotsa partying going down, smoking up some special herbs grown within the Fade, chilling in the hot tub w/ naked Elves. I'll even have my own retinue of female warriors that I will call Fish Speakers. I'll even be hosting a Qunari diplomatic detail partying down by declaring, "The Qun demands dancing, and so you will dance and be grateful!"
All this will be happening while Demons are wreaking havoc across the Thedas. Heh. Not my problem.=]

Have it ground down to gravel and use it to line the pathway to my private estate, but only after I've used my station to embezzle enough gold to build my estate and amass a large personal fortune.

Some might call it corrupt, but whose stupid idea was it to put me in power anyway?

I just hope the Inquisitor doesn't get a castle just because he/she is so special and important, and all he/she can do with the castle is hanging out and partying there.
That would be awful, as awful as Shepard getting Anderson's apartment on the citadel.

For example in Dragon Age Awakenings we had to fortify and upgrade the castle for an upcoming attack, I'd love to see something like that in DAI.

Sure, I guess moving rhythmically is dancing.

Back on topic: The garden idea sounds nice too. The Inquisitor could grow some herbs and bananas.

Hmm I wonder if the Devs actually read these posts or use them as feedback for the game.

Anyway I am a big fan of in game personal property. Be it being able to buy many houses lands or just having one house/castle/base. I was just overwhelmed by the castle in NWN 2 and what it had to offer.

So here are my ideas starting from the general stuff and moving to the details.

First off I would like to get the castle rather early in the game. And by that I do not mean in act 0 out of say 5. More like act 1 or 2 out of 5 so I would have the other acts to add something (quests for ex.) Furthermore, It would have to be a demolished or long forgotten one with no infrastructure so I could start from scratch. Also either as a reward or having to take it by force (2nd option seems more fun. Like can be a commando mission to get inside using a secret passage and then killing or capturing the inhabitants).
The player can choose what to build and would have many options. Though maybe a prison should be set as default. After all what's a castle without a prison.
My ideas for building options are (like Tarek suggested) - Storage rooms, barracks for factions that join you and also for your own forces (think you should have your own soldiers like in DA:A or NWN2); armoury, a tavern (definitely), brothel (not my first pick but I suppose); extra towers and walls; a alchemy lab or science room for an inventor; training grounds; torture chamber (if someone is evil); personal chambers ofc.
Now you shouldn't be able to build the things just like that. You would need either money or building material or both. For the special upgrades to already built stuff you would need special mats and maybe a special character recruited to live at the castle. This also implies owning the places you get the mats from like a stone quarry.
Most of the things build should be possible to interact with. Training grounds - you hire someone to train your troops and you will see that being done there. Tavern - well loads of stuff: parties, fights, companion convos. Armoury - can oder better equipment (also you need mats - iron or better ore mines) for the soldiers. Science Lab - can have upgrades available to buy or to research and will be ready to be bought at the right place after u come back to the castle (also here you would need the recruited mage perhaps?) Walls and towers could be strengthened and also some traps could be added or stuff like catapults and archer nests? Personal chambers - used as a trophies room and a bedroom that changed based on you actions in the world. Like some letters from thankful people appearing or presents. These are just some ideas but I think I made the point, that everything build does have an interaction (possibly more than once), clear.

Now I don't know if our base of operation is just the castle or does it also have some land attached to it. But if it does then I would guess it is used for growing food and gathering resources. So maybe also that could be upgradable (building farms, roads, mines). Also the mines should be imo areas you can choose to explore and take over. Plus you need to send men over there and see them working.

That's all for the building part. Now that we have a magnificent castle I think it would be a waste if it would just stand there. How about it being attacked from time to time and we could choose to defend it or not and the result would be based on its defences (that includes the garrison and the infrastructure). Also the decisions events from DA:A were nice. Just give more and let the player see the effects around him. (your troops actually patrolling the roads, bandits attacking in places less patrolled). Being able to send your troops to certain areas to do missions would also be nice and even better if you could accompany them.
How about establishing trade routes? Merchants could trade on the castle grounds and caravans could more between your castle and towns (here you can add encounters with bandits vs caravans as an example).
Now all these ideas give room for more quests/events. I highly doubt that all this would be implemented into the base game content (mostly because I doubt BioWare would use this since they already have an idea what they want in the game) but these things could be used for DLC. I know I would happily get every dlc that would give customization/quests/upgrades to the castle. I just love to stay longer in the world of an rpg game and these things give me that time spent :D

Anyway Thx for reading this long post. Hope you like the ideas.

Yes, we do!  ;)

This sounds great! It reminds me of somethings I have wanted since I heard we would have our castle.

It really osunds like a mix of ME2 and DAA. I really hope we get to send our troops on missions. Maybe one of our companions could leave these extra missions. The last thing I want is to lead the inquistion but only be a lapdog like Hawke was. If im a leader I want to  send my troops on missions the advance my agenda.

I also really want to have big meeting and make descision about how the area around my castle is run. Similar to the meetings in DAA. This castle idea has a lot of potential I hope Bioware do something with it.

Thinking about this some more, I would like the castle to hold some surprises. I would love it if there were extensive secret passages or tunnels, and better still if their discovery required something more complicated than moving a bookcase. I would like them to lead to new areas and new quests, once found.

A feature like that might also be used to surprise you, whether an ally or an assassin turns up in your room, or function as an escape route. It's been done many times before in fantasy novels, but it seems like a feature that is well suited to a game.
