Just wondering what would be the best class to play, and is it worth playing dao before to transfer the story over?

Depends on your playstyle, really. I prefer a two-handed Warrior because I'm big into melee and like being able to take damage.
I wouldn't bother playing DAO just to import save data. Your choices in the first game have some impact on certain quests in the second game but not a lot. Play DAO because it's a good game; otherwise, just use one of the pre-built histories.

Alright I do like melee alot. Is it worth making a tank for da 2? Or should I just stick with two handed?

Two-Handed Warriors can serve as suitable tanks. Sword and shield warriors do the job a little better, but they're underpowered in DA2.
Honestly, on the ocassions where you need a tank, Aveline does the job pretty well.

oh ok, tough choices to make. How are the mages?

Do you mean "how are mages as a class" or "how are the mage party members?"
To answer your first question, mages were nerfed a bit from DAO; their focus is mostly on area damage, which can be problematic on Nightmare difficulty. But they're still pretty strong. Force Mage is generally regarded as the best specialization, or so I've heard.
To answer your second question, Anders is good early on as a healer but I find he becomes a liability by the third act because he goes down so quickly. Merrill is somewhat weak early on but becomes devastatingly powerful by the end game.

So would it be best to create my own mage that focuses on healing?

Its worth it to play Origins. One, because its a great game. And two just because your choices from 1 doesn't impact 2 doesn't mean it won't for 3.
If your playing a Mage, you'll want to take the Healing Specialization because this game has you short on healers. However, I didn't play a mage many times and never used Anders (I hate him so much) and made it through the game ok. Needed to stock up on healing items at times though. Also the healing spells and items in this game have a ridiculously long cooldown time.

Heal spell 40 seconds, health potion 30 seconds.

Why does it take so long to heal though? Did Bioware not want to have a good healer for this dragon age?

It's a myth that you require a healer in your party. I didn't have one for about half of the the game, which I played on Hard difficulty, and I did fine. Potions take care of damage, and by Act 3, you can rez unconscious party members with Mythal's Favour.
Sure, there's a long cooldown time on potions, but if you're putting down bad guys efficiently, you won't really notice it.

but what about on nightmare?

Healer isn't required on any difficulty.
The most powerful class in the game on nightmare is assassin/shadow rogue. The weakest is the mage. 2H warriors are strong, but not overpowered.

So just buy a whole bunch of potions and I will live?

More or less. This game is all about mastering Cross-class combos and damage output. Killing enemies quickly is more important than healing.

On Nightmare you also need to be careful that your party members don't kill each other with friendly fire.

is there a guide to learn how to master cross class combos?

You can look at the Wiki, but this stuff is pretty easy. When you're upgrading talents, they will specify whether they impart a DISORIENTED, STAGGERED or BRITTLE CONDITION. Now look for talents that do extra damage to enemies with those conditions. (Pinning Shot + Spirit Bolt is one of my favourites.) Now set your tactics so that characters use those damaging abiities when an enemy is afflicted with one of the three conditions. Now you're done.
