Are any of the attributes helpful or required for perception? That is, anything in the game that helps spot, hear, or search for opponents?

There is a skill line  that start with Survival. You can get four ranks in it. To get all four you need 16 cunning.

Also, I am wondering if I can aquire enough talents to aquire the needed archery skills, as well as melee weapon and shield?

No. You are shield and weapon - or you are an archer. To try to do both will mean that you excel at nothing, and do two things poorly. And they require different attributes to be maxed or not, different armor, and so on.

Shield and weapon usually = tank. Massive armor. Moderate dps. High defence. Ability to grab and hold aggro and soak up huge amounts of damage, while the rest of your team annihilates the enemy without worrying about getting squished.

Archer = light armor, fighting from  a distance with a longbow. They are squishy, a support class. They can make a big difference to fights if done right, but ...

I hope you see the difference.

There are situations in which you will want all of your characters to equip ranged weapons. They will only be able to auto-attack, and do sucky damage - but that's the trade-off. Those situations are very few, and very short-term.

Spot, hear and search arent DA:O skills as such, but if you level up Survival you will be able to assess enemies (that you can see ahead) better (type/level etc.). Just hover your mouse over red dots/arrows on the mini-map. Also, as a Grey Warden, you do have a sense of Darkspawn; in game this usually amounts to hearing them before you can see them. Warning: It can get very loud in the Deep Roads :)

You will be able to acquire all the archery skills and some from melee, but not all of both I don't think. However I have never reached the (soft-) cap in any of my games.

PC? You need two mods: backpack mod so you don't have to shlep back and forth selling crap 10 at a time.

Respec mod that allows you to rebuild your character if you think you made a mistake, and rebuild your party properly.

Thanks! Just want I wanted to hear.

From the little I have read, I thought of designing a 42+ STR and high DEX Dwarven Archer to wear any armor, get hit less often, and deal solid dmg from range. But if and when melee is needed, the Archer track seems to only have 12 Talents, which should leave at least 13 Talents if I make it to 25th lvl.

Why is the armor and strength route a lesser choice than all DEX, since both stats are used for the longbow?

There is a lot of argument even from those who do all the calculations (I'm not one of them, math *shudder*) about what does and does not work - and how. I've read the threads, followed the arguments, and people still can't agree.

Besides, there's also the ranks in your warrior specific skill lines (2 of those) and your specialisations (2 of those) that will be soaking up talent points. You can make a build that lets you, say, make a tank who also has a couple of archer skills - and go the way you suggested - but not one who is able to 'specialise' in both. You can't fill both roles properly, or that's my feeling.
Warriors and rogues, in this game, are just much for effective if they specialise (the same is NOT true of mages). That's only my opinion of course. You're free to disagree, of course, your game, your money, your choice.

I may not specialize. Templar seems to require drug addiction; not in my image of the hero I wish to play at least. Berserker and Reaver also differ from my style of thought. Champion is still a consideration, though.

I saw another thread that was going to do something sim, but they were going with Two-handed weapons as the non-archer choice; may think on this as well.
