Yeah, the backgrounds really need to be very, very significant to make up for the loss of playable origins and race selection. We'll see what they have in store.

At least the combat appears to be improving, and we'll have a lot more customization than DA2. There are improvements. It has to be a better game, just not sure to what degree or how it'll end up stacking up against Origins.

*fingers crossed*

Why not?

THEN DON'T PLAY ONE!

*Mind Blown*

I won't be, because they won't be in the game...

I am fine with the main character being human as long as that character can have multiple perspectives on the conflict or multiple back stories. It does not need to be like origins but I would like the choices to be more diverse than Hawke. Maybe a mage that grew up in Ferelden and the circle was disbanded/destroyed or a warrior from Dennerim or a pickpocket rogue from the streets.

I am pretty sure the backgrounds will be just like Mass Effect. Choice of three things that get mentioned at the beginning and you have a sidequest that will mention it. They copied everything else from Mass Effect so why not?

It's not correct. It was a step back from DAO to DA2. DA2 didn't have race options, so not having in DA3 isn't a step back. If voice options are cut off in DA3, it'll be (in Bioware's opinion) a step back from DA2.

So basically we haven't moved anywhere from DA2. I thought that is what most of us wanted to avoid happening.

On this topic, not much, though it depends on how backgrounds will work in DA3. But I already knew that we'll not get back race options months ago.

Would a phenotype generator pacify the race fanatics?

There you go - elf and dwarf.

If you're asking for the cultural archetypes to matter - then a dwarf from Orzammar and a elf from an Alienage wouldn't be Inquisitors. And if we're not being Inquisitors - it's still radically implausible that they'd be involved in a human war - especially as a major player.

It may be your story - but it's their game.

Now - I fully support an elf protag game of independence, and a dwarf one of recapturing lost glory... but those aren't this game.

Remember at the beginning of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, where they claimed that "every choice you make will be reflected in the sequels" or something like that? Yeah... You saw Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age II, right? Any background you choose for your character is bound to be throwaway flavor text, nothing more. I don't expect much from this game.

Please I have to play as an elven character. In any fantasy game, the elf is my go to race. Playing human in DA2 just made me feel odd. I'm a human in actuality, why play one in a fantasy? In each elder scrolls games I always levitated towards the wood elf. I feel elves make better rogue then humans, plus they have those awesome pointed ears.Posted Image

Humans are more relatable, and are also physically the largest.  A frail little elf or a bearded midget isn't exactly "heroic."

In your opinion anyway. In mine, humans are deceitful, power hungery jerks whom goal is to enslave anything that's coherently self-aware. Personally an elf seems more "heroic"

And your point?  Why is it not in the game?  Why is the premise of the game narrowing all perspective from the game to one point of view?  It is not like they are forced to make the story from the Inquisition.  And yes it is their game (and story) but I (and others) are allowed to disagree with the premise and execution and if need be, with our money.

I guess we just need to stop hiding the deceitful, power hungry elves then.

They said they wanted to do more than that. If the backgrounds will act in the same way as ME, I'll be disappointed, but we can't know what they want to do it with them. The DA team didn't want to give us background, and ME was done by a different team and writers.
I hope that they'll do a god job with DA3. If I would expect that DA3 will be garbage or a bad game, or a game I'm not going to like, I would merely read the threads here (because I enjoy reading certain discussions) without posting.
I didn't like much DA2 and ME3 (though I don't think they were garbage or bad. I think they were overall decent, but not good, and I didn't enjoy as the other Bioware games), I think that Bioware could still make a game that I can enjoy.
About the "every choices refected in the sequels", I hope they'll stop claiming this in marketing. It surely is a good way to make people interested, but it's hard to do it, and it backfires easily. It's not a thing that could be done without a massive effort (and even in this case I don't think it's possible doing completely). Though I don't remember it for DAO, and it doesn't make sense as much as claiming it for ME, which was a trilogy with the same story and protagonist.

Yeah, it's not like the greatest known GW hero before DAO was a elf.

There was also this nobody named Shartan that helped another nobody named Andraste against some schoolyard bully called the Tevinter Imperium, but nothing ever came of that...

My favorite character was a half-elf paladin, so city elves are the closest things I've got in Dragon Age. Playing a human just wouldn't be the same. I'd even prefer a dwarf.

I quite liked playing every Origins in DAO. Though I regret the fact that there wasn't the option to play as a dalish mage.

And kossith are, what, over-grown humans?

Hawke the human battles many Tal-Vashoth and Qunari kossith in DA2, and can even face off against the Arishok in Act 2. Do we consider Hawke less heroic just because s/he is physically smaller? Or do we consider the defeat even more meaningful since s/he managed to take down people nearly twice his/her size?

I don't know about you, but I always felt like the mighty David taking down Goliath every time my protagonists defeated opponents bigger than them. Especially as a "frail elf" or "midget" (nice way to insult real thin and short people, btw).

Also, just because you find humans more relatable doesn't mean everyone does. Elves, dwarves, humans and kossith all have different historical, religious, cultural, and socio/economic backgrounds. Since people in real life come from different backgrounds, you never know who might find other races' circumstances closer to theirs, or even if they just find them more interesting or enjoyable than humans.

I personally relate to the elves more since I was born from a minority family and was raised in poverty and prejudice, whereas Andrastian humans basically mirror the white Christian society many of us might feel disconnected from, or even bored with for one reason or another (hence the escapist fantasy). You never know.

Finally, "heroic" is what you do, not how you look.

Wrong the Qunari are the largest and elves aren't frail they're lean.

Personally, this is one game I won't be buying to begin with. Could be I'm going to miss out on a lot, but I'm willing to take that chance. What made Origins great was the option to view Thedas through the eyes of more than just a single origin. Sure, the options weren't always great, but they made the game immersive. If I played a dalish, there was always something that made me want to help the dalish. Play a casteless dwarf, I choose Bhelen every time because I can't betray my character's sister.

Maybe eventually I'll give it a try, but I'm not feeling very anxious to play it. Especially if it turns out the background origins are just as in Mass Effect. Maybe it's a petty reason. Could be I'll be missing out, but to see the world from only a single perspective, human or not, simply isn't enough.
