I usually play as a human, but I did play through DAO as a Dalish elf once. It is kind of a downer that there won't be a race choice for the player. I'm hoping Bioware will release some piece of info about DA3 that will please me. So far the bits of information I've gotten have just depressed me.

That's not a bad marketing move, actually. Mass Effect 3 had a lot of problems with pre-launch "exciting statements" that were revealed not exactly true or too "hyperbolic", so they decided to start with releasing infos about the things that they know fans will be scorned with.

Until now we basically know only what is NOT in the game: no race selection, no framed narrative, no silent main character.

We'll have to wait until the official marketing start (spring, IIRC) before "good things" about the game are going to be presented to fans.

One among many reason I really like and enjoy Origins (and still play it from time to time)
is because the race and gender option.

Seriously bioware, if its going to be a copy paste da2 clone man it up and say it up front.

To be honest I'm a little depressed about it. The opportunity to play an elf and dwarf again were what I was looking forward to most in DA3. I missed being an elf mage, that has and always will be my favorite path to choose.
More than anything I miss origin stories, though... I've had a playthrough for every origin at some point, start to finish, and I love the little touches added to dialog and quests depending on which you play.

But it's not a game-killer for me. The most important things to me are character interaction and overall story, so I'm going to wait for more word on those before I pass any judgment.
Aaaand maybe I'm secretly crossing my fingers that Zevran plays a bigger part in this game...

I wouldn't say it's good marketing that people are already giving up on this game after so few information has been shared.

I don't mind playing as a human. But to compensate for that lack of choice, a more powerful character creator would be nice. One which allows for more variability and the creation of a more distinct and individual PC. Maybe even selectable character traits that have an influence on dialogue now and then.

I'm fine with playing as a human, I have a feeling it's part of the story and that being a human is important for this particular game. I trust the Dragon Age team to do what they think is necessary to make the Dragon Age story amazing ,so if that means being human again then so be it. I personally just can't wait to see how the mage/templar war is going end, as long as they keep that storyline going I'm a happy camper!

You sound like a mindless drone  / -_-\\ -----:alien:

But i'm also a die hard DA:Origins fan

One of the key components of role playing games is to experience different lives through different races... whats the fun with more limited customization.
If video games are getting better, shouldn't they be bigger too?

I was just thinking. What if in a future game you guys let us choose our race without the "origins" back story? Just an idea. I loved playing as an elf in that world, and I felt that there was more opportunity for RPing as a non-human character. I imagine that making the protagonist a certain race makes it easier on the Devs storywise, so, I understand the decision. I just personally will miss that added RP element.

Give me an Elf or a (possibly rogue) Qunari. I may have played Origins (and many other RPG's) as a human first and had no real problem with Hawke as a character, but game after game of playing as a human in a fantasy setting is boring.

To be fair, I consider the lack of a framed narrative to be a good thing. I hated how DA2's story was given to me and I like playing in the there and now, not being told some story by someone. And, if they keep the combat from DA2, people won't have the "oh, well, it's over the top because that's how X character is telling the story" excuse.

so its been comfirmed that there will be no race selection in DA3?? kinda sad really, you would think the templar war would be a bigger issue than races really.

Personally speaking I liked the options in DAO.  I played as an Elf mage and really found some characters' opinions towards my warden as interesting.   I also liked the background stories to the different origins and the impact it had on the game.

I still haven't done a proper playthough as a human warden.  Probably because he/she had a noble background.  I kind of like the 'underdog'.

I don't have a problem with the PC being a human, but it would be nice if you still had the option of choosing his/her background and to see what influence it had on their views/dialogue and the story.

I play as whatever the story will allow.I paid 60 bucks I'm going to unravel every plot thread and twist I can find.Male, female, elf whatever else they can think of.I'm getting my relaxation and moneys worth.Though I think based on DA:O and my feelings on DA2,just having a human in DA3 is kind of limiting.

I see what you're trying to say but i'm not a mindless drone. Personally I believe I have a pretty good understanding of what Bioware is trying to accomplish with DA3 and I believe that playing as a human again in this game serves a purpose for future games, making another human protagonist isn't just the DA team trying to ****** off fans, it's most likely part of the plot, but then again I could be wrong. :)

I am disappointed by this design decision. In fact, when it comes to fantasy role playing games, I am disappointed in any design decision that takes choice away from the player. I've put up with being limited to a specific race or even a specific character before. Such was the case in the Mass Effect and Witcher series respectively. However, in those cases the players were set up to play a specific role from the beginning. In the Mass Effect series you're always Commander Sheppard. The only choices are to be male or female, paragon or renegade. In the Witcher series, you're always Geralt of Rivia. In those games you don't even get to choose your gender. In both of those series, players knew from the beginning which character they would play and accepted that. The story and game play was compelling enough to keep them playing, though some of the more hard core role players still chafed at the lack of character creation choices.

With Dragon Age, we've gone from being able to choose race, gender, and origin to being able to choose only gender and now in DA3 to being able to choose gender and background. I think it's pretty understandable that some players feel disappointed. The tone set by playing the background stories and the freedom of character creation in Origins had much more of a classic RPG feeling to it than the character creation process in either DA2 or Mass Effect. It helped players to feel like they were playing their own character rather than one that Bioware created for them.

Another reason the lack of racial selection is disappointing is that it neglects one of the reasons that we enjoy playing fantasy games in the first place - which is the chance to be something we could never be in reality. Humans are remarkable creatures with amazing potential to be sure, but we all play a human every day in real life. Given the opportunity in a fantasy setting, I much prefer to play something as far from human as possible.

I don't think this alone - being restricted to playing a human - is a deal breaker for me. It's just a disappointment. It may not be the only one. I don't know for sure with the limited information available about the game, but Bioware's recent track record does not make me feel hopeful.

I read in a post earlier in this thread that we will play as "the Inquisitor." Is that true? Can a source be cited? If that is accurate, then that is another disappointment. Of all the organizations in the game, the Andrastian chantry was the least appealing to me. I have no desire to play a character associated with them in any way.

Orrrr they have just enjoyed all the games thus far and see no reason to care about these changes, as they trust Bioware to deliver a satisfying final product? If you personally enjoyed every game of the series and everything else the company has put out, are you a 'mindless drone' to figure they'll do a great job again or are you simply trusting in an established pattern?

Personally I think it's a mistake to not let us play as the other races in Thedas. You have all these many different and interesting races, The Dalish and City elves, the Dwarves of Orzammar and Kal-sharok, the Kossith of the Qunari ETC.

I think it's silly to forgo the option to play as other races with rich and fascinating cultures, and that it's only going to hurt Inquisition's replay value.

Humans are boring.

Humans are not necessarily boring though in Dragon Age they are . In Game of Thrones, for example, everyone is human in a fantasy setting and they are exciting. In Dragon Age, humans all kind of run together in a bland mass of blandness. They literally could not tell Hawke was a Ferelden from a Kirkwaller in DA2. It just kind of makes humanity one culture (well two if you count the Imperium which you cannot play as because they are always chaotic evil) that is largely based off of real life and not terribly exciting.

Not everyone. There are giants too, and the Children of the Forest. And zombies. But I get the point you are trying to make. xp
