Personally, I have no problem with a human only protagonist. Although I wouldn't mind playing as a dwark or elf again. I feel that Bioware shouldn't be surprised at the disappointment by some of it's fans after allowing us to play as any of the three races in Origins and then disallowing it in any subsequent games.
I always saw that as being the reason why Dragon Age: Origins was called Dragon Age:
Origins and not simply Dragon Age. Origins gave you the option to play all races to get the player into the world and cultures of Thedas. DA2 went in another direction, focusing on another story since Dragon Age: Origins had already set the stage, and it looks like DA3 is doing that as well. I don't mind one bit. As long as I can pick my class and make a character that is different from another character in terms of personality and looks I'm happy.
Then again I mostly play as humans in RPGs (with a few exceptions like Zabrak or Cyborg or something near-human in SWTOR). So while I understand that people are somewhat disappointed, I really don't understand why people are as upset as they are. The way some people are going on makes it seem that they have been promissed that DA3 would have all races as playable races. I'm actually happy that Bioware's resources, time and effort are being put on other things than player races. Honestly, I also find it more interesting to learn about other races through companions. Because then we get to see them through human (our player character) eyes. But again, that is because I almost always play human in these types of games.
