It does seem that Bioware has decided to go a more mass effect route for there games which is their right, but at the same time they should not say they plan and having the best of Origins and DA2.

As to what constitutes the best of DAO and the best of DA2, there's hardly universal consensus.  At most you can assume it means some things will be taken from both games, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're the things you thought were the best.

I'm not a fan of the Andrastian Human protagonists in Dragon Age. I was hoping Inquisition would have brought back the Origins. I didn't find Cousland appealing, and I disliked Hawke a great deal. Playing as another human in Dragon Age disappoints me. I think it would have been entertaining to have Elven, Dwarven, and Kossith Origin stories. I'm certainly more interested in the Dalish culture than I am in Andrastian society.

Can't go wrong with a human. Would I like to play something else? Sure, sometimes. Is it worth SCREAMing and CRYing about? Absolutely not.

I'm a bit disappointed but I'm hoping we at least get some background customisation even if it is only Shepard style.

I am just afraid that who we are as a character will be limited. I felt like I really made my own character in DA:O. But in DA2 the second I heard the he would be called Hawke and be a human I knew that he would not be MY character. I do not want the same to happen in DA3.

As much as I would have loved to be a Dalish Elf again, I understand that the devs though it would be best for the story if the PC was human. I can't really say I hate that we will be playing as because I don't know anything about these backgrounds we will be getting.

Hopefully though, we will get race selection in MP. If it has a Dalish Archer MP character I will be okay with that.

Race selection would have made me interested in buying the game. But I'm not disappointed, because I had no hope for race selection to return.

So... do you have any other features, that might interest me?

I'm a big fan of DA Dwarves so naturally it saddens me that it hasn't been possible to make racial selection possible again. That said it is hardly the end of the world and the reasoning I have heard against putting it in makes sense.

I do hope to see robust customisation tools available however, really take advantage of focusing on the one race and give us as many options as possible in designing our character's look and personality. I want to have my character's look and act as diverse as possible. I like the idea of a background system that impacts on the game, hope it isn't a throwaway feature though..

To elaborate, my main gripe with the lack of racial choice is that humans are pretty much the most priveleged group in Thedas. Okay, noble dwarves are too but that's beyond the point. That automatically makes me feel some embarassment and/or straight out dislike the protagonist. Even if i try to help all the city elves or invite all casteless dwarves to live at my house, that still makes me feel like the PC is just a jerkface "ally" sticking their nose in all the places and always making it about themselves. It does take some deal of motivation out of things.

Of course i also can see mage/templar thing as mostly human mess, with Chantry being a human institution, and in case DAIII:I is focusing on that again human-only PC does make sense. So wev, i'll live.

Still sadness.

I always play as a human so the decision doesn't bother me. I like that resources that would be spent on multiple races may be used to give depth and complexity to our human character. Having Origins that will affect the overall story, although limited to a human character, is very much welcomed.

Since we are Inquisitor, i can't imagine anyone else then a human there. Had to be them - someone else might have gotten it wrong.

A point that so many miss while fretting over no racial choice.

Quanri Inquisitor: May the Maker bless you.

Random Quanri: No.

Its not nearly the issue some are building it up to be.

If that makes it a "no buy" for people then oh well. Ferris Wheel effect. Thats how business is.

Ultimately, my opinion on the racial restriction will be based entirely on how reactive the game is to our other choices such as background, specialization, and in-game decisions.

Extensive options in the character creator couldn't hurt, either.

+1

If I am always a human. Fine, I like playing elves more, but I enjoyed Hawke (this is the part where I am shunned)

If I can work blood magic though after siding with Templars, and STILL be named Vicountess, I will be a mad panda. (and those bastards are vicious)

This dragon age might give the most unique playthroughs. Reasons:
A lot of things going on in the world.
Background of characters.
How my characters will be able to react depending on the background.<will i go against my background or not>
Specializations intertwined with the story
I am looking foward to this a lot and i love what i hear so far

Personally, I have no problem with a human only protagonist. Although I wouldn't mind playing as a dwark or elf again. I feel that Bioware shouldn't be surprised at the disappointment by some of it's fans after allowing us to play as any of the three races in Origins and then disallowing it in any subsequent games.

I always saw that as being the reason why Dragon Age: Origins was called Dragon Age: Origins and not simply Dragon Age. Origins gave you the option to play all races to get the player into the world and cultures of Thedas. DA2 went in another direction, focusing on another story since Dragon Age: Origins had already set the stage, and it looks like DA3 is doing that as well. I don't mind one bit. As long as I can pick my class and make a character that is different from another character in terms of personality and looks I'm happy.

Then again I mostly play as humans in RPGs (with a few exceptions like Zabrak or Cyborg or something near-human in SWTOR). So while I understand that people are somewhat disappointed, I really don't understand why people are as upset as they are. The way some people are going on makes it seem that they have been promissed that DA3 would have all races as playable races. I'm actually happy that Bioware's resources, time and effort are being put on other things than player races. Honestly, I also find it more interesting to learn about other races through companions. Because then we get to see them through human (our player character) eyes. But again, that is because I almost always play human in these types of games.

It's not a deal breaker on it's own but certainly a major disappointment. I much prefer to play anything other than a human in a fantasy universe. Humans are, most often, the least interesting race available.

The main problem I have is being forced to be human is another feature of DA2 returning when there has been so little said for people who loved DA:O and it's features, found the second game mediocre but still like the setting.

If there is Multiplayer (and it's something like ME's multiplayer) that's probably our chance to play as any race/class.

This would probably be fixed if they gave the character creation a "Phenotype" choice.

I really don't think elf or dwarf makes your character more interesting at all.

If they made Human Alienages - or Dalish Humans... those Origins would have still been interesting (more interesting even since they would break type) - the same with dwarf Origins.

As for the rest of Origins... the game played largely the same with whatever race you chose.

Your characters makes your character more - or less - interesting. Not pointy ears and beards.

Reaction #1:

I'm satisfied. People really shouldn't make a big deal about it. Without BioWare, there wouldn't be any of those games. I know it's hard for many to let go of their Wardens or their Hawkes (myself included) but I'm actually glad I get to play a human being again with different backgrounds. I don't identify myself as an elf or a dwarf role player, so this would've make my personal experience awkward.

Reaction #2

I'd honestly prefer to play as Hawke again, since we're going to a voiced protagonist and he's till going to be human. Having Hawke around with his or her love interest would deepen my Dragon Age III experience. While I understand that Hawke's story is meant to be over, I don't like how it finished on a cliffhanger for Dragon Age II and I'd rather play him/her again than having the writers killing him/her off screen. (Fenris, Anders, Isabela and Merrill could also make their returns as potential love interests for non-Hawke characters. Sebastian doesn't count in my opinion.)

Can I just say I find it amusing how people constantly say DA3 will not live up to the Witcher 2, a game where you can only play as a defined male human character. Then people learn in DA3 you will only be able to play as a human, albeit a customizable one, and people are up in arms over it with quite a few saying they took away one of the best things about DAO.

Just another day on BSN I guess.

Hey Teddie! I do know if you heard but hawke might return as an NPC :)

I wanted multiple races but as long as they give us a lot of cuzimization it will be fine. Now if we only get human companions I will be very mad
