I can't believe it... so its confirmed then? Only human protagonist?

Well, yes. It is a disppointment. A big one. I was pretty sure you were going to bring back the race choice...

If I have to measure how I feel about this, well; its a big problem for me. I never liked to play as humans in RPGs, and I really enjoyed being an elf in Origins. I guess that if the non-combat abilties are not going back neither, both things would make me not buy the game.

I can't believe this...foreced to be a human again. Sigh.

That wasn't what I meant. I meant coming from a different cultural perspective. I was able to kind of do this in DA2 by interpreting that my Hawke followed the Imperial Chantry, but it wasn't my favorite solution.

Your PC converted to the QUN, and is now just being clever and secretly pretending to be an Andrastian. Or he's using a magical glamour to convince everyone else is human, and your background is just the convincing lie you've magicked up as an elf infiltrator in human lands.

Basically, you can rationalize away every single fact in the game if you want the perspective, and if you craft a good enough rationalization. This is why I care about reactivity.

But if you want a different cultural perspective ... there you have one.

There aren't any magical glamours that do that. And the illusion is rather broken if you have to address elves as a human.

And ME3 was an amazing game. Until those last 10 minutes

ME3 was a pretty good shooter. It was not an amazing game. War assets were far too shallow, there was barely any role-playing, Kai-Leng was cheap, the story was rather poor with the exception of Tuchanka (which was spot on), characters were less interesting than before and the one truly interesting new character was cut out as DLC to make more money, Shepard was not awesome in this game, etc.

The only thing that was actually good in the game were the shooter mechanics. And the graphics were shiny enough, but whenever I think of Mass Effect, 1 and 2 spring to mind much more easily than ME3 does.

Did you honestly expect any different? ME3 should have taught you a lesson, if nothing else.

I'm fine with a human-only protagonist; it's all I usually play as anyway. Here's to hoping they have nice hands this time.

I would prefer greater choice, but I'm not put off by this.

I'm mind boggled by the number of responses like this.

Not that I can't imagine people who would only play humans (I can) but that you would feel the need to say it. If they had announced the game would only come out on XBox and people were raging about it, would it not seem incredibly d!ckish to come in and say "I only play games on the XBox, so this doesn't affect me."

I mean... if people are upset about something, nothing makes it worse than someone coming in and saying "this doesn't affect me, so I'm cool."

Not trying to call you out specifically, Gali, but I've seen that response over two dozen times in this thread it seems like and am baffled by it every single time.

In itself it's ok if there's a wide variety of customization options and backgrounds. Of course it's disappointing as a fact, but one can live with that.

I'd have played as a human anyway. So... yeah.

^ this.

[EDIT] @FastJimmy - this is a post asking about our feelings relating to the protagonist being restricted to human - negative AND positive.  Saying "I like playing as a human, anyways" is a valid opinion and relevant to the topic.
Sorry it disagrees with your opinion, but that doesn't make it d!ckish, as you so say.

I can't say that strikes me as rude or "d*ckish." Just...lacking perspective.

A) Flemeth's shapesifting magic. Or you found the only one.

B) You're really good at lying, and you're not willing to break your cover but secretly side with your true people at every chance!

Seriously, if you don't care about reactivity in-game, you can fan-fiction it away with a ... wave of the hand, really! ;)

Maybe inconsiderate is the word I was looking for. I just like using the term d!ckish more.

Well, let's see, here is what I see:

Player X: Human PCs suck. They're the worst. It's a horror among horrors to be stuck with this. DA3 will suck for me. Damn you, Bioware!

Player Y: [Hey... I really like playing human PCs!] Well, nuh-uh, I play only human, so it's okay! Also, your mom!

It's just people glancing at this thread, and pushing back on the hostility toward their preference. It's human nature. It's why you would get this in a thread about the game being xbox exclusive, if there were a bunch of posts on how the xbox was an inferior plague upon the gaming world, and the master race of PC players should be catered to instead.

I believed that DAO had sufficient reactivity. I would be fine with this in DA3.

But at the same time, if no one said they were fine with this decision, the BSN would explode with people saying "See Bioware? No one even wants a human protagonist! How could you be so stupid? It is MP all over again!"

Reading your argument, it seems to translate into, "People who express opinions diffrent from my own make me angry."

People who like the single race choice can express their opinions here just fine.  This is a discussion forum after all.   Saying that it's "dickish" sound more than a little whiny.

To each their own. Suffice it to say that I really disagree, and I can't wait for the day Bioware has (i) an actual, honest to god proactive PC; and (ii) reactivity to your choices.

What's the alternative? Only people who are upset are allowed to post in a thread like this? Considering the people who like to imagine there is consensus regarding any issue they're upset about, I think it's fine to offer one's opinion on the topic even if it's ambivalence... one does not generally find threads dedicated to "I am abivalent over the lack of player races", after all, so it's perhaps not so terrible to say "hey, not everyone is upset about this."

Especially when we don't allow multiple threads on a topic, and all chat about player races is currently being directed here.

He wasn't talking about people being okay with the decision. He was talking about people bieing okay with the decision because they percieved it as not affecting them.

Different.

But that is why they are okay with it. Because it doesn't affect them. The fact that it affects some people is why they are mad about the decision. The way we are affected by things is one of the major ways we create opinions.

I am saddened that I won't be able to play a dwarf again (looks like my avatar will remain from DA:O again), but I have faith in Bioware to do the human-only protagonist in a pleasing way.

So, it does affect me, but I am still okay with it.

Ahhh... reminds me of when someone says they have been farming the same boss kill for however long for some rare drop, and some jerk replies that they got it on the first kill! Sometimes they even link it in chat to prove they have it!

But to the topic at hand, Alan did ask us about our feelings on the subject.

@ Maclimes - Your sig is AWESOME.
