 In Dragon Age 2 Leliana claims that the Warden is still close to her heart.
Yet she is working for the Divine in Orlais while the Warden is now leading the Wardens in Amaranthine.

How could such a long distance relationship possibly work?

I've gotten the image that they had her dump the Warden no matter what since they want to keep using her character and have little to no intention of bringing the Warden back in the future.

At least David Gaider already came out and said she's unlikely to return as a romance option for the new protagonist. That being said, I'm getting the feeling that romancing her wouldn't really amount to much after Origins.

They both have important jobs to be doing; it seems reasonable to me that they could go a long time without seeing one another and still consider themselves to be together, given the circumstances. And under normal circumstances I'd think it would be pretty easy for Leliana to track the warden down when she's done, probably not so much the other way around but as far as I know the warden isn't the one jumping all over the continent.

Of course, I just made all that up; we're still waiting to see what happened / happens.

Leliana says the Warden is "dear to my heart." She never says "We're still together." You can take that as her meaning, but I'm certain that some people would refer a lost love as being dear to their heart, especially if their relationship were forced to end because of outside responsibilities.

What I'm getting at is the Warden and Leliana are likely not together anymore at that point in DA2.
