By now it's entirely bleedingly obvious that the templars are right, mages are too prone to demonic posession to not be held on a tight leesh (even if corruption inside the chantry/templars might temporarily overshadow that fact). DA1 beat us over the head with it, DA2 beat people over the head with it ... do we really need another game doing the same thing?

It's about time that we change the world a little bit in this respect ... because that dance has become truly tiresome, especially when that structure of the world is so often a center in the story telling. It wasn't so bad in DA1 where it was secondary to the blight and for me any way overshadowed by the gradual discovery of stories about the golden/black city and Andraste (which I thought would be the core of future stories, since I was expecting epic story telling ... alas). DA2 and now again DA3 seem to offer no such respite though ... can we at least put an end to it in this game?

I think at this point the world would become infinitely better if we could find some way to cut off the mages from the fade and demonic posession ...

Hell no. That'd be a ME3-type ending.

There's only way to solve this mage and templar problem............. kill all the templars. SIMPLE!

Didn't the novel Asunder prove that tranquillity can be reversed?

From an overzealous templar who would sacrifice the humanity of fellow human beings and his own humanity by extension ... it's not a solution.

PS. I guess non solutions like this are more artistic than happy endings ...

I completely agree. All mages should be made tranquil and employed in little shops to keep them useful and out of trouble.I really don't see how people prone to demonic possession are even allowed the right to exist, tbh.

Ugh, I guess the only fans remaining are all grim dark teens looking for "adult" subject matter.

I'm a kid at heart looking for happy endings :(

You missed my point.   Cutting mages off from the Fade, or "setting them free", would turn them into Tranquil,   You can't separate the fade without turning them into Tranquil.

If you think Pokemon is for kids only, you don't know Pokemon.

The story teller can do anything he wants ... just because making them Tranquil is one way of doing it doesn't mean there aren't a million other ways of doing it. Which could all be made perfectly believable with sufficient layers of BS. This isn't math ... it's bloody magic.

Dreamers are generally free to enter the Fade without being posessed ... lets say the Veil was stronger when the golden city was still intact and that we can restore it by traveling to the Black City and setting things right? Ignoring that it's epic and Bioware doesn't want to do epic any more, would it really be so unbelievable (within the context of a fantasy role playing game).

Real life is full of problems that can't just be magiced away.  People have to learn to live with those problems and learn to manage them.  That's what maturity is all about.

I'll be mature in my own time, games (and literature) are for escapism for me ...

Mostly because magic is the nuclear power of Thedas but I've been saying for some time that the Chantry is far more compassionate that I expected it to be.
We burn and stone people to death in our reality and we have zero evidence that there is anything beyond our material world. Had there been magic and demons during the Dark Ages, we would have commited genocide within the month.

No it would be a ME3 ending if you could go to the black city and once there found out Andraste turned out to be an evil demon preparing the world for demonic incursion, but says she now got tired of the scheme and is giving you a choice ... kill all the mages, be turned into a demon and rule over the demons or fuse all sentient creatures with demons creating a new form of peaceful hybrid. The end.

What I'm suggesting is simply strenghtening the veil.

Short answer: They're needed.

Long answer: The Tevinters, Qunari, and Darkspawn have them too. Not to mention that the spawn and the Qunari have other weapons that are about as dangerous, and apparently the Joining needs mage involvement. Apparently, there will be two more Blights, and even if everything goes right with the fighting (It won't) the fact remains that that means two more Joinings will be required.

Plus the templars use mages in combat against demons, as shown by the Codex; The Pride Demon Codex states that this helps a little but not too much against this particular kind, since Pride Demons are just that powerful.
