I disagree, there was tons of story that was told through the atmosphere, the recorded tapes, and the remaining key players. For me Bioshock was all about the setting and seeing what happens to people who reached the pinnacle of man, only to see the 'other side of the coin' so to speak. To really appreciate what was going on and what Rapture really was you do have to pay attention to what is going on in each area.

I did. But that wasn't very much about it. It was all atmosphere, but it was told, not shown (re: the tapes), and it all got to point toward the same thing. There was no one to really interact with, it was just exploring ruins, and after a point, I get the gist of it. It all felt like one very long Skyrim-style dungeon.

If that's the case then the news that Infinite will have more character interaction and has you traveling in a duo should be interesting.  It sounds like the developers agreed or at least wanted to try some different things.

I'm really curious to see how Levine handles a more character driven story. I remember reading that his main tenant for survival horror games was to ostracize the player, to make them feel alone. There are a lot of similarities between Bioshock and System Shock 2 in that regard. Basically I'm just excited about Elizabeth's role, it seems like Levine stepping out of his comfort zone maybe.

I'm actually trying to not get hyped for this game, and I suggest everyone else do the same.

Not because I think it's going to be overrated, but because I think keeping expectations in check will increase over all enjoyment. You know, being surprise instead of prepared for what's coming.

Plus, a lot of recent games haven't lived up to the astronomical hype and were ruined for many people. Bioshock should be ruined for no one.

I don't get hyped for games. I always have a highest and lowest expectation in mind, if a game is pretty good it usually falls somewhere in the middle.

In case some haven't noticed, Irrational released their First Few Minutes of Bioshock Infinite which--as you might guess from the title--depicts the first five minutes of the game.

While the video has a spoiler warning, I wouldn't exactly call anything in the video an actual spoiler. Raises more question rather than answers, and so forth. Though of course if anyone want to experience the game fresh from the get go, then obviously it's not for those eyes of yours to see.

I'm going to hold off on this one. I got too much spoiler stuff before Dishonored and at some point you have to just wait for the game itself.

Ken Levine's AMA on Reddit

Some quotes:

" 'What makes a BioShock game?'. If it was Rapture, there would be no Irrational BioShock game coming out now. After a lot of soul searching, we determined it was a) The game takes place in a world that is both grounded in reality and fantastical at the same time. That world needs to be more detailed than any other game world out there. b ) The combat has to have a strong improvisational nature, with a suite of player tools that lets everyone approach combat differently."

"Shawn Elliott said that where the last game was about Archeology, this game is also about Anthropology, in other words, you get stories from both the living and the dead in Infinite."

"I think there's lots of different ways to write games. I have a particular style that doesn't rely heavily on cutscenes. That tends to be super tricky for a lot of writers and a lot of good writers who have applied here didn't make it because of that issue (despite their work being excellent otherwise).  The most important thing to remember is that games aren't movies. I've written both and I find games much harder to write for. If you were applying at Irrational, I would write something that its clear you've thought of the five thousand ways a player could break the scene."

"I think i answered the second question elsewhere, but I'd add that you should read great books, and watch great movies, and play great games. That's really the best thing you can do. Also, read On Writing by Stephen King, Screenplay by Syd Field and Adventures in the SCreen trade by William Goldman. None of them are about video games per se, but they were hugely helpful to me."

"We have a dedicated group on the PC version. Our first priority is making sure that it feels like a game that is at home on the PC. Chris Kline our director of tech, has been driving this process. We're very sensitive (after getting a well deserved reaming once before) on the issues of widescreen and mouse acceleration. We also want to make sure that the fans have effortless access to the game, so we're using Steam's standard DRM. People have asked before if we're using GFWL and/or SecuRom, and we are not.

I also have to say, the game looks beautiful on PC."

*SPOILERS*

That was AWESOME! Really, everything in it, the beginning with the Woman (perhaps Elizabeth) asking Booker if he is afraid of God, and Booker answering that he is afraid of her, continued by the quote about memories, and the whole lighthouse scene. Really, just brilliant! Can't wait fot more!

*END SPOILER*

That Reddit thing was intresesting. Nice to see someone doing stuff like that.

Anyone knows how long the game will be, and if it will have any replayability? Bioshock 1 had quite a lengthy game for an FPS, but I think it suffered when it came to replayability.

Bioshock (or any shock games) have good replayabiity for a FPS imho. Especialy Bioshock, numerous powers and weapons to chooe and there is also "Little Sisters Choice"

^True enough when considering it's a FPS, but other than playing differently through different plasmids and weapons, from a story perspective there wasn't a lot in that area. The little sister isn't anything major, since it's either save all of them, harvest a few, or harvest all of them. It's very monotous after the first few Sisters and they only affect the ending. Bioshock 2 improved on this a little, but still nothing major.

That Reddit AMA was an interesting read. Some people brought up good points. Shame I wasn't aware of it earlier. Though rough launguage he sure uses...

According to Levine, it'll be very similar to Bioshock; replayability mostly leaning on gamelay mechanics, with vigors / gears / weapons / etc. Though he did mention that this time the story may bring more replayablity in the reddit link above, though he didn't state more since that would require him to go into spoiler territory.

I've just finished BioShock for the first time, great game with awesome themes.

Should I play 2 (since it wasn't developed by Irrational) or just wait for Infinite?

2 has kind of a weak story compared to the first. Its basically just for people who could not get enough of Rapture.

Its ok game at its core, but it did not really add anything to the series.

I would wait for Infinite.

"A common criticism of the original Bioshock was the lack of multiplayer. What is Irrational’s approach to multiplayer in Bioshock Infinite?

Our approach hasn’t changed…every game we did prior to Bioshock had a multiplayer component, and I don’t think it mattered. It always came out of the request of the marketing department.  If you look at multiplayer, either you are going to do something that’s profound, or you’re wasting your time. Absolutely wasting your time. Because, what are people going to do? You’re going to have a couple thousand people play it for a few weeks, then they’re going to go back to great multiplayer games - Call of Duty, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead. My feeling always has been if there is an idea that is organic to the product and is profound and is going to move people and excite people and really add a dimension to the product that is not just good for the product but stands on its own as a game, then you do it. If you don’t have that, you don’t do it. At this point, we haven’t made a determination about whether or not we have something that’s profound enough or what exactly our thinking is there"

I know this is from 2 years ago, but did they confirm anything for MP?

Indeed. Certain publishers and developers, *cough*biowEAr*cough* could learn from that. If you're gonna half-ass something maybe it's better not to waste time offering it in the first place.

Tbh, the MP team is doing a better job with content and dedication compared to the SP team and I prefered the MP aspect.... ironic.

I did too actually. That doesn't change my feelings on the MP still being half-assed though. There's nothing particulary innovative, unique, or interesting in the mode that makes it scream something you'll only find in Mass Effect. It just seems rather generic and tacked on to me, although that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable.

Bioshock 2 is still a good game though. The only thing the first has on the second is "would you kindly" but other than that the second game may actually have a better story. I would agree that Rapture no longer being unique is its biggest drawback but the gameplay is miles better.

The Plasmids are actually balanced, you aren't gimping yourself if you chose to use something other than Electro Bolt or Telekinesis and being able to dual wield, made weapons more relevant. I remember in the first Bioshock I could do more damage using Telekinesis to throw the tommy gun's drum magazine at enemies than actually puting the magazine in the gun and shooting.
