I just started ME2 after having finished ME several years ago. Having some interface problems. I don't understand how to use the Squad Powers screen. I was advised to...spend some squad points or something like that. I get 2 points to spend. I see several power categories. What do all the colors and boxes mean? I click on a category and 1,2,3,4 light up. I can spend one point but I can't spend the other point on anything. It won't "take".
I searched on Youtube and Google but came up empty - I guess it's too easy. The manual didn't have much of anything either. I guess these interfaces are just too complex for me...even though I have a few years under my belt in in designing them as a programmer/analyst.
Will all the "interfaces" have to be intuited by me? I had no problem with ME1. I also had to search for help with hacking a terminal but got that quickly on Youtube.
I ended up auto-leveling.

In ME2 powers have four ranks, as you've seen. Rank 1 costs 1 point, rank 2 costs you 2 more points, rank 3 costs yet another three points and rank 4 costs 4 further points on top of the total of six you spent to get that far. So to max out a given power you need to spend ten points overall, and with the 2 points you have at the moment you can't get to rank 2 in any power. However, you should be able to get rank 1 in two separate powers providing one of them doesn't require you to have rank 2 or greater in another power, e.g. (may be wrong in detail as this is from memory) Engineers can have Cryo Blast but cannot start putting any points into it at all until their Incinerate power is at rank 2, at a cost of 3 points. Mouse over a grey one and it'll tell you what power needs to be raised to what rank for the greyed one to become available for future points investment.
Colours: grey means you can't spend any points in that power yet, invariably because you need to raise the rank of another power first as I've said above; green means you've got that rank in that power; amber means you can get the rank in that power if you have enough points. At level 1 I think you have a single point in each of about two or three powers and then you get 2 more points when you level up to 2 after escaping from Lazarus station. You can either use one point to gain a new power at it's most basic level (providing it's not greyed out of course) which unfortunately will leave you with a single point that you can't do anything with yet, or you can use both points to improve one of those powers you already have to rank 2.
Might not really be explaining that terribly clearly but if not then I suggest you go back to YouTube and look at some of the Walkthrough or Let's Play videos rather than something specifically about the power screen. There's a couple I've seen where even though the player doesn't overtly explain it you should be able to see what they're doing in the powers screen and work things out from there. Try the one by DeusEx4Ever. It's a no-commentary run but at the squad power screens it's easy to see what's going on. First couple of times the squad power screen is used is parts 3 and 4.
HTH.

Wow, PsiFive, thanks for the awesome explanation! I'm so jazzed I think I'm going to play some! I guess it's been too long for me since I played ME 1.
