There is a weaky discussion about it, but it doesn't make the problem any clearer to me.

1) What does a ring "5% fire damage" do?

- Does it add + 5% fire damage to a melee/range/spell attack?
- Does it protect the wearer with a 5% fire damage reduction?
- Does it... do something else?

2) Does it add to any already existing fire enhancement?
Like a +5 fire rune insert in a sword for instance, or the "fire weapons" (almost permanent) spell of a mage?

Those dragons are gorgeous... since I'm at it.

Thanks.

It adds a 5% dmg, not much to write home about in other words,
get Cinderfel gauntlets from Uldred that add 20% before bother

So it's just as simple as that? It simply adds, on top of everything?
Well, that is something I can understand for a change...
(I still haven't found where to read in DAO the whole amount & quality of damages my PC can do...)

Thanks.

Any '+X% element damage' gear will increase the damage of that particular element by X% for the user, provided the user is dealing elemental damage to begin with. A mage using the Magister's staff with the ring of faith equipped, for instance will increase his/her staff damage by 10% as the Magister's staff deals fire damage. This 10% increase will also increase the damage dealt by any fire elemental spell the mage casts.

Now, let's consider the situation when a mage is using a staff that deals physical damage, the Corrupted Magister's Staff for example. Note that this staff boasts +15% spirit damage, while the staff deals only physical damage when autoattacking with it. This means the +15% property won't add anything to the staff damage of the user, while it will surely increase the damage dealt by spirit elemental spells like crushing prison and mana clash.

In awakening, a warrior specialized as a spirit warrior, having learned soulbrand, deals spirit damage with every form of attack, be it melee, ranged, or fists, when 'Beyond the Veil' is sustained. Spirit damage increasing rings (Dreamsever, spiral band) are especially useful for such a warrior, extremely useful to be honest.

It does increase the damage output of runes enchanted onto melee weapons, but well, you can calculate the increased damage, it will be far too less. Highly inefficient, I'd say. Don't you agree? Even in awakening, when you have Paragon elemental runes, it won't provide much dividends with a elemental damage boosting gear.

It doesn't add to any elemental resistance, so no protection.

Finally, this bonus is capped at 30% in Origins and 50% in awakening.

Hope it's a bit clear now. I have to admit that I was also confused about this very same thing a few months ago, and posted a similar querry, and got some very enlightnening responses. Coupled with my in-game tests, I finally understood the mechanics and did a lot of rewarding playthrough afterwards. :)

Thank you very much. Yeap, I should have realized... a 5% of a 5 damage rune isn't really worth the discussion any way.
Anyhow, enlightenment was appreciated, and it helped me to understand the DAO mecanism at least.
I should have more fun with freely wandering the game instead of wondering too much from now on.

Merci.
