Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files:  Dog=Mouse [magic canine, intelligent, protector]

Group of mages called, yes, the grey Wardens, bit like the circle enforcing discipline on themselves.

Terry Pratchett's disc world: Corporal (later Captain) Carrot of the Ankh Morpork guards [probably the true king of Ankh Morpork, has royal sword, brought up by dwarves, doesn't care for power, is a virgin until hooks up with werewolf fiancee, good sense of humour] = Alistair

Both sets of books tending towards the humourous but with some serious undertones.  You haven't lived until you've read "Guards! Guards!"

Any others?

Fie!  Carrot is nothing like Alistair!  Alistair doesn't deserve to polish Carrot's boots, and Carrot probably would want to polish them himself anyways!  He certainly wouldn't chuck them at Wynn to polish--"Wynn!  Please polish my boots!  I have to do rounds tonight and I can't go about ringing by bell and saying "All's well" with dingy boots!  Surely you won't make me polish them myself, I always leave smears, and how can I patrol with smeary boots??"  If you think Angua would put up with Alistair's nonsense. . .  Part of the reason she loves Carrot is because he can be alpha, while Alistair thinks it's so much more relaxing if someone else handles all the annoying decision-making.  Angua wouldn't look twice at Alistair.

Hmph.
