*SPOILERS FOR HALO 2 AND 3 ENSUE*
The problem is, they did it all wrong. The ending is similar to both Halo 2 and 3's endings. It's like Halo 2's because you feel that everything isn't over and it was way too abrubt. It's similar to Halo 3 because the hero is give a ****-a** way to go and kind of feels like a slap in the face to people who care about the main character.

I was pissed when I first saw the Halo 3 legendary ending. But I knew, and how couldn't anyone, believe that that wasn't the last we'd see of Chief. So it took away a lot of the sting, and now we don't have to head cannon.
Look at what we got in Mass Effect 3. It all goes down very similar, albeit not even a fraction in cool compared to Halo 3's final mission. Except that Master Chief is coming back, and now Bioware has said that Commander Shepard will never be back. It is a horrible ending to a trilogy spanning story. I would've liked to have seen what had went down if Halo's fans cared as much about Chief as we do Shepard. I guess I'm in the 5% of people who play Halo that care more about the Campaign than the multiplayer.

Halo 2 had the fact that it wasn't the last game.
Halo 3 did it well and very moving. At the time I didn't know that the MC's story would move forward, but we know he's alive and in stasis. He's a badass in a can who in the Halo 4 teaser busted OUT of his can.

Shepard in ME3, however, is stuck under a pile of rubble and could be alive (Some foreshadowing and a filename) or dead (Not being immortal and being very badly wounded and squished).

It's not that hard to feel the thematic difference in execution. One did it well, the other did it horribly.

They managed to doom destroy with high ems by chosing not show what really ahppened to shep, and the reason they don't admit anything or say anything is that id they do,let's say they say he's dead...all hell will break loose porbably because if you snuffed him like that it'd be insulting to the chcracter...and if they say he lived then all hell would break loose too because fans would demand an expansion on the sequence...let's face it peple BIoware didn't have the balls to give proper closure in that particular ending...had they shown an extension on the breath scene with sheppard living I can assure you a lot of people wouldn't be here complaining...they'd be playing the game more often...even with its inconsistencies and all.

And I feel this is where they dropped the ball, there should have been a clear surviving shep, you had two endings where he dies and sacrificies him, give one where he survives but pays the price (edi and geth).

Let's extrapolate.

Why play the games at all? Why not just IMAGINE the story of Shepard and his crew without every touching Mass Effect?

Or watch TV, or read books, or watch movies, or listen to music.

This.

Or just youtube it for free.

Personally, I paid Bioware for their imagination.

While I don't believe a word of this since it isn't even out yet (and you wouldn't be horrible person by spoiling things would you?) of course it would be done better, because the writers aren't trying to do "art".

Why is everyone upset that we didn't get more cutscenes of Shepard's allies?

Why does everyone act like the choices didn't make a difference in the universe?

Why are you all incapable of accepting that the ending is open-ended, and try to force BW to give clarify absolutely every little thing that happened?

What do you people want, exactly?.

You people have no idea how spoiled we are, being able to see everything that happens in the game in high-quality cutscenes with phenomenal voice acting. And you complain about the little bits of sideplot that happen from the EMS screen? What ever happened to imagination? What ever happened to enjoying open-ended adventures and coming up with your own stories? No other series has given players such opportunity to create their own universe, and you whine that your every action isn't given a unique cutscene?

Bah, I'm probably wasting my time. If you did get all this stuff, you'd whine about railroading and that YOUR Shepard would never blink like he did in that cutscene. Hell, you morons actually managed to whine your way into getting an ending where Shepard derps and chooses at the last second not to save the universe. And then you get mad at the fact that refusing to do the one thing the plot says you have to do makes you lose the game. Unbelievable.

'No!  Stop crying you stupid baby!  I told you, your dog is not dead!  It's at the farm!  We took it to the farm where it has lots of other animals to play with and lots of room to run around!  Can't you picture it in your mind?  Happy and roaming about?

'What?

'No, I don't care what you saw "explode on impact" - there was no truck, there was no horrible crunching sound, there was no splash of blood.  And no, I certainly didn't drop the lead.

'JUST USE YOUR IMAGINATION!

'Stupid whiny crybaby.

'...Now go get me my shovel so I can scrape this mess off the road.'

Personally, I tend to agree. At the end of my Mass Effect trilogy, Shepherd lived. I don't need to be told that or have it spelled out for me in a big epilogue scene, though the extended cut certainly provided one heck of a good epilogue for things. However, as I've said before, in a series dedicated to choices, Bioware provided you with one more. You get to decide how your Shepherd ended his journey - alive or dead. When Mass Effect 4 comes out, they may decide on a canon ending but regardless, that doesn't change your ability to focus on what you wanted to get out of the ending. What we should all use is our imagination and our ability to enjoy this amazing series, regardless of any flaws that one might have with their interpretation or feelings regarding the ending.

Well yeah, because again, they, most likely, aren't trying to force things and instead rely on a more natural progression. Allowing us to actually make bonds with character we should feel for, unlike that stupid kid and only leaving us in the dark for the sequels which we know are coming.

Technically only you win.

the less money bioware get, the less likely they are to butcher their own stories further, everybody wins! Image IPB

Or EA shuts them down like they have other companies. In that case, Bioware loses and all the fans, myself included, who liked ME3 will never get more Bioware games, so we lose too.

This to me is the biggest fear of the pro-enders, that oh noes, if they keep complaining and don't hand over their wallets, EA will take away Bioware!!! :o

So what happens if you get your wish and we all just go away? We're still very unsatisfied customers, who will REFUSE the next Bioware product. You may think we're a small minority. That may be the case of the vocal ones, but I know many who never visit the forums who have sliently crossed Bioware off their lists  and who will not be back unless the next game gets spectacular gamer reviews. Therefore, it is in YOUR best interest for the rest of us to be satisfied with Bioware and get a real conclusion to the trilogy, so we will gladly hand over our money for their next game.  More paying customers means more money for games. Get it?

Considering Mass Effect's story arcs generally wrap up rather neatly (such as the genophage, the Geth/Quarian conflict, and even minor ones like Conrad Verder's), I'm not sure why they'd wait to the very end to completely abandon any sense of consistency.

It's downright awful storytelling, but then again, it's just a game. It's not some great TV drama like Breaking Bad, it's not the Godfather, it's just a video game, and video games have a long way to go as far as storytelling.

If we wanted to use our imagination, we could all sit around writing fanfic. When we pay hundreds of dollars for a trilogy, which is advertised as the end of Shepard's story, we expect the end of Shepard's story, not a cliffhanger.

I had forgotten about the Darkspawn Chronicles, Julia, but you're right, it was entertaining even though I only played it twice, and you know they didn't have to produce much outside of what they had already done for the battle of Denerim to do it. Yet they could do a simple scene with a patch, couldn't they? I imagined a brief scene with generic rescuers searching, and one calls out, "Over here. I think it's Commander Shepard!" Hells, the janitor could do the voice. I can even imagine Conrad Vernor being part of the search party. Or maybe Conrad Vernor saves Shep from being thrown into the protein vat by a keeper. See, I can imagine, but I shouldn't have to pay $80 to do so.

Fate of Shepard is perfectly clear:

Dead, Overlord of the Universe, or Alive.

Why do you need a reunion cutscene?

Although I can see what you're getting at....

We don't need to play the damn game either. Bioware's ambiguity isn't 'artistic' it's just annoying.
This is a video game, they should show things, not write things or delate content so we can 'imagine' it.

Thanks to fans outrage other developers will know that people don't tolerate that sh*t and it won't become popular.
Prometheus did the same and many people hate it for that, hope that'll be a good lesson to movie industry, too.

And no, I don't hate the endings, I love destroy ending, but leaving 'breath scene' the same as it was pre-ec was very dumb and annoying. Also Priority:Earth still sux balls. What, am I supposed to imagine there are millions of people fighting or rushing to the beam when I see like 40 soldiers tops?

Dont worry. they have allready decided to make a sequel to prometheus.
its announced and heres the imdb-link.

Also ridley scott allready came out and said he understood the critisism and will answer most questions fans had about the first movie in the second movie :) so atleast he got what bioware didnt get lol

Well, top marks for you then. You certainly have a better imagination than I have.

The "Epilogue" was series of slides, with a voiceover. Don't want to sound unappriciative but that's what it was. Literally.
