Two swords is cooler than one, but you can't have 2 swords. Just a sword and a dagger. Personally, I'd have loved to dual-wield axes.

I was thinking that a one-handed weapon skill tree would be nice for the Arcane Warrior. Especially if you give the one-handed weapon skills a quick draw line. It would be nice to be able to do damage from a weapon draw, especially since unmodded Arcane Warriors have to sheathe weapons to cast some spells. Also, iaido isn't limited to katanas. Fiore de Liberi's Italian school of longsword (at least) has quick-draw techniques for a straight-bladed longsword.

I do understand that this won't work very well for as long as weapons are sheathed on the character's back. This would have to wait for DAO 2, when they make the rag doll physics and let you have weapons in a scabbard.

I wasn't talking about iaido...I am talking about Tai Chi..which I did. It is very graceful and like sword dancing...which requires a Kitana...It be nice to see something like Tai Chi in DAO 2.

In Aikido (of japanese origin) we practise with a bokken (wooden katana), and as far as I know Tai Chi is of chinese origin, therefore I'm baffled by the statement above, since both are rooted in old and proud traditions.

..anyway, does it really matter what is most efficient in real life? (one handed) single weapon talents would be cool, but if I had to choose I'd rather have spear talents.

Because the movements are actually done by a real person to be computer generated....did you know that? So...yeah...you sorta need it to be efficient in real life...to work on a game.

Yeah, I know about motion capure, but it does most certainly not have to be efficient in real life! Sure, some of the moves has to be possible to do (at least for believability), but thats it, they can edit the digital model any way they see fit.
Besides, DAO is pure fanatsy, you did know that right? Image IPB

I believe you can indeed weild two swords or even two axes eventually (fairly late in the game I think).

Tai Chi requires a sword? Isn't that the "martial art" that old women do to fight osteoporosis?

Tai Chi is a martial art, so don't be fooled by the slow movements, and it's not that slow when used in a fighting situation. Tai Chi also incorporates (but does not require) the use of weapons - swords, staffs and spears, maybe others too.

...but I still find it hard to believe that Tai Chi techniques would include the use of japanese swords!
The word katana can be used for other swords than the "samurai sword", but since that specific word was used, something doesn't sound right. Tai Chi is a chinese fighting style, and katana is a japanese word Image IPB

Single handing a one-hander is radically different from two-handing a great sword: stance, momentum, attack types.

Two handing a one-hander is not really feasible. The hilt is smaller, the ballance is wrong, it's too short to effectively fend with, unless you go into a stance that prevents you from turning offensive. There are swords designed for both one-handed and two-handed use. These are called bastard swords, and also come with their own quirks, like often being longer, narrower and less resillient.

A two-handed weapon is radically different from a one-hander in size, weight, momentum and use of stance

Sword & Board is closest to single handing, but comes with the loss of agility, simply from the added encumbrance and the loss of your shield side for wielding your sword.

Dual wielding.. now, dual wielding does look extremely cool when seen in motion, but few people are ambidextrous to the point where they could dual wield without cutting themselves or accidentally slapping one of their weapons out of their own hands with the other. It is a trainable skill to some degree, but those who can write their name with either hand in calligraphy usually started out with finding they're able to write recognizably with either when they learned to write in the first place. Dual Scimitars Drizzt-style? Hardly realistic for most human beings. Dual Desert Eagles Lara Croft-style? Again, hardly realistic for most human beings.

Bastard sword, something Alistair would use. /bad joke

As for the whole katana thing, the Chinese swords would more accurately be called the following:

-daos and their various cousins (chang daos, da daos; etc, basically they're Chinese sabres)

-jian/chien/gim (straight swords)

There are others but I think those are the most commonly used.

As you said...it incorporates the use of weapons...I chose a kitana...in my fighting style...it is what I use, but I do staff as well, I like smacking people with sticks..swords hurt you know. I took many fighting styles both Chinese and Japanese, so it is was why I picked a Kitana.

in the books, maric used a longsword and nothing else. Seems to be another thing in the books that didnt translate over to the game, like horses.

Make an arcane warrior. Give him/her a longsword. Use sustainable combat magic. Now you're a powerful one-hand weilding hero. ...I think I might do this myself.
