What exactly is expected out of a black character, for it to be "real". I mean, are people expecting the history to match the real world so that they can identify with there triumphs over adversity and what not?
This is a hard subject to type about, I did my best, I hope this won't turn into the usual accusation of racism if something is construed as insensitive.

Eh, I don't think they were "supposed" to be anything. Which is why saying "we need black characters" is sorta slippery.
I want dark skinned people. Because I want my niece to be able to see an awesome woman of her skin color doing awesome things. Sounds silly, but it does have a psychological impact, and makes me enjoy an RPG more than I already do. And variety is awesome.
Like Sheva. Capable, formidable, clothed (until the ending, but, baby steps)

Up thread it was said that simply being dark skinned wasn't being black. What is wanted in a black character exactly? This is not the real world, in Thedas dark skinned people may never have been oppressed by anyone or share a history with the real world. They maybe be very advanced cultures of art, science, and a great military power. Hell they may have elven slaves of their own.

Well, meeting any kind of new and different culture in Thedas would be awesome. I don't care who it is. The more the better.
Variety is the spice of life. I would like to see more darker skin toned humans running around Thedas if for nothing else than to relieve the monotony of seeing nothing but pale, big foreheaded ppl.
Though darker skin tone is no guarantee the abundance of big foreheads would be kept down to a dull roar. So...

I think it's unfair to dismiss Isabela. If you insist on splitting people into two types, white and black, than Isabela is clearly black. She's not african american black, which is whay a lot of people seem to think of when they think black, but she was still black. I do agree though, more darker skinned characters would be nice. If they do do it though I hope they give them their own culture and land rather than just throwing them in and acting like Ferelden or Orlais has always had them.

*derp* I can't believe I forgot Duncan.
There's also the issue tho that BW has had issues rendering curly, or even wavy hair..
Anyway, whether the DA team is able to put it in DA3, or in some future game. I would love to see an entire Dragon Age-y culture based, even loosely, on African mytholgy; Cultural lore; Creation stories. Some amazing stuff there.

But yes, the ability to at least have darker skin tones for the PC is coming. Which pleases me greatly. I would have liked a darker toned PC in the DA series, like my Shep, but...it did not want to come out right. So..yeah.

Jacob? Anderson is black. Some of the soldiers on the Normandy are black as well; I think one has blonde hair. Shepard is black too.
That's tanned, but I get what you mean, plenty of well done black Shepards on youtube
Tanned? The lighting is, well, light in that scene but she's quite clearly black. As black as the slider gets.

Indeed,
though, only one of them was playable, which is why I brought up Jacob.
And all of them are from the ME universe. How many can you name, that
are from the DA universe... who don't have blue eyes? ;P
Black people in DA? Yeah, there's my Warden -- oh, no blue eyes? Ah. Well.

@OP, I can't be sure, but that show based on a book you were talking about sounds like a Wizard of Earthsea. My mum read it to me when I was a kid, so I'm not really sure if it was based on African culture at all, I don't remember it being, but yes, pretty much all of the main characters were black. There was a white nation though and a priestess or something from it who was also a main character.

Yeah, that actually might be the book I mean, especially if that became a TV series, featuring said actor.
And it's not that I'm dismissing Isabella, I just see her as more... I want to say, hispanic. And though I have no problem with that, I'd also like to see someone who appears more of an African descent, ala Jacob. Except... maybe with a better personality and backstory.

I don't know why black/dark skin looked so wrong in Dragon Age, when the same intended skin tone looks completely normal in Mass Effect.
Because they had completely different engines. Dragon Age was made with Eclipse, and Mass Effect with Unreal. The Eclipse engine couldn't render dark skin very well. The darker the skin, the more it started to look like an overcompressed jpeg with jagged, pixelated lines where gradations of color occurred. We are hopeful that we can have a much wider range of skin colors (particularly darker ones) in Inquisition thanks to Frostbite.
I'm glad to see someone from Bioware respond. It's much appreciated to have some inside insight into the mechanics of the original engine. Still, I'd be curious to know your thoughts on the subject in general.
I don't doubt you wouldn't want to make a character for the sake of making them, but the fog warrior idea someone else mentioned seems like it might be quite an interesting concept to look into, if you haven't already.

I've found it odd in that most RPGs I've played, there's rarely an interesting black character. I know a lot of people weren't crazy about Jacob, but at least he proved that in the future, black people still existed. Even if this character came from an entirely different nation and culture, it's something I'd like to see added to the DA franchise, and not just as some dude you talk to once, but as a full on awesome party member.
((Discuss))
The closest thing DA's got to black people are the Citizens of Rivain. Which can vary in skin tone from Isabela and Duncan to that mage in DAII who was hanging around Grace.
Also Mass Effect had Anderson, who blows Jacob out of the water.

Yeah Anderson was pretty much fatherfigure/mentor of the universe award material since that man just breathed calm and cool...granted Jacob never stood a chance to be paired next to him. Heck, I like plain boring Jacob, probably the only fan, who loves the fact I have a normal character to comat the crazy space hijinks.
Its nice to have a voice of reason....granted his side mission and abit of his lines for the LI needed to be reworked since it played upon the daddy issues some black males go through and his "but the prize" T ruler body shape......granted the man is flawed (greatly butchered for LI fans..*sniff*), but I cant help but not have him around.
Plus as much as I hate to admit it...Sazh from FF13(guilty pleasure wheneer Im sick) is a good example of a black character that well....did not make me see his skin color after an hour of playing.
