There should be different kinds of mages in the game to chose from. I love the Qunari Mage. He just had that look you wanted to be around you. I would love to have a few unique Mages with various looks, armour and special powers.

I just want to be a regular caster mage, maybe with some light melee (That blade staff is awesome).

No dresses please, cloaks/long coats are fine.

I never want to see armour like that in Dragon Age.

I do agree with the OP though, there needs to be more mage types. It gets a bit boring with a majority of RPGs just having mages run around in robes. I want a mage who wears leather, chainmail or plate armour. I want a mage who uses a sword as well as magic.

My first playthrough in DA2 was a Force Mage, it was so fun to see the little people rolling into a little ball and dragged across the town square to be "wooshed" by one of Anders' fireballs. And I can't help but think of SWTOR and the Consular- it was like the best of both worlds, you could chop things and hurl rocks. It was cool to see the fancy karate type moves with the staff, but it would be cooler to beat your enemy over the head with it after you put a Crushing Prison spell on them. I enjoyed the specialization in DAO that allowed Arcane Warriors to use their magic ability to equip heavy armor, and use an awesome sword. It is nice to be able to do one-on-one combat in a melee style once in a while.

I just want an arcane warrior/battlemage spec. I'd be happy.
Except...

battle attire probably should not show that much skin. Can't protect you well if you're not covered, yes?

For mages I think something like this would be cool:

Posted Image

Light, doesn't get in the way of casting and movement, still offers someprotection.

Not knocking on the art, but I hope I won't have to wear that. Skin tight leather is not my thing.

I second that. It looks like he wouldn't be that mobile in that gear. Chafing all over. He would need talc powder after taking three steps.

World of Warcraft continues to impress me with its wide-range of uniquely hideous armors.

+1 Glad they introduced an option to cover up the ugly with actual interesting looking armor. My paladin should wear plate, not bikini O-o

I don't get the whole mage equals robes thing. I'd like to see some rogue-ish attire for mages. Perhaps not leather, but let's go with a jerkin or tunic with pants, maybe a little embelishment like gauntlets or boots. I know the whole idea is mages are a glass cannon, but why must that be canon? I like the idea of a hybrid mage/warrior, and I model my fiction toward that idea. I want to see a "battle healer" that has offensive and defensive magics, knows how to actually fight and not get backed into a corner, and can wear some medium armor. Full plate might be going a bit too far, but tissue paper is silly, too. There can be a middle ground somewhere.

I think DA needs more hybrid classes in general. A battle healer/paladin like above, REALLY want Arcane Warrior back, and a magic rouge? Pickpocketing psychicly? IDK. Theres so many ways to play hybrids that it adds a lot of replay value IMO.

Why do you need a "Paladin" class? Just play an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer. Boom! Paladin.

If they would just return arcane mage and the battle mage specialization you could have your wish. Now of course for them to not be too overpowered you shouldnt be able to cast and fight at the same time with the same weapon in your hand. The same restriction you had in DAO.

You could cast spells with a Sword, and Shield in DA:O. It just wasn't as powerful as if you were using a staff.

Not that staffs were really needed. You could still wreck **** barehanded.

I agree with this.
