- I want DAO combat!
- I want DA2 combat!
- Can we have the best of both worlds please?
If only all topics were like this.

but I would love a Witcher 2 like combat.
There are already enough RPGs with this approach. I loved The Witcher 2, but DA needs to find its balance and, most importantly, keep its own style.
There are not enough party-based games on the market right now.
Anyway, I personally preferred DA2's combat style: it was over the top and the waves were annoying, but at least I found it entertaining and challenging on Hard/Nightmare.

How? DA2's combat was way more boring, in my humble opinion. There was no thinking involved, no planning, just trying to do as much damage as you can, especially for mages, who should just specialise in area of effect spells to kill everything in seconds. And the times you did lose, it was because of the wave system, and not because you had done the battle poorly. You can't predict Saarebas spawning on top of you.
DA:O on the other hand, requires me to think and sometimes even to retreat. Even more so now that I have Combat Tweaks installed.

I loved the animation of DAO - found the combat much more enjoyable to watch.
I did like the DA2 combat and found the tactical settings easier to engage, but that animation, art style and Hawkes shoulder cam wiped out the positives and then some.

Well, this. They could slow down it a bit and make sure that the characters aren't doing insane backflips that shouldn't be possible, but aside from that I don't really care for how slow DA: O's combat was.

>Magic
>Realistic
Pick one, seriously.
I just want them to keep the combat strategic, not so slow paced as DA:O where every sword swing looked lazy, reminding me of Runescape. DA2 at least put some impact to every strike you made.

You must mean the other way around, as DA][ felt like i was not hitting at all, just swinging like a madman without impact, as opposed to DA:O, where every attack counted, EVEN as a rogue.Akugagi wrote...

Which game did you play first if I may ask, imo people who played DAII first often didn't enjoy DA:O at all, expecting an action game like DAII.

I like DA2 combat but no thinking is required to fight, in DAO if you don’t plan your fight and go in with your eyes shut you will be dead.
I do like the avoidance of getting hit in DA2 as in DA1 you will get hit wherever you are standing so it is a waste of time trying to escape a hit so i hope they use both the old and new combat to make it better.

I think it would be best to find a middle ground because DA2 was to over the top, and DAO was just bad imo.
Pretty much, though I wouldn't say DAO was bad, just too slow paced.
The pace of DA2, but without Power Ranger Putty Patrol Darkspawn that explode in a mess of blood and gore when you so much as poke them - that would be ace.

This. I enjoyed, to some degree at least, combat in both games. My complaint with DAO is that everything, from greatswords to daggers, was way too slow, and that often made for boring and sometimes mindless combat.
DA2 is extremely faced paced, which was more engaging but was also mindless. It wasn't until I started replaying recently that I also noticed how much wave combat there was in this game. It was present in a few situations in DAO, but holy crap people!
I think if they toned down some of the speed from DA2 and added a sense of weight to the attacks, we'd be pretty solid.

DA:O combat bored me to tears, had to force myself to finish the game at several separate instances. Also, never did play anything other than a mage, just couldn't stand the clunkiness of it. DA2 can be toned down but it was fun. Also, not being able to predict this and that doesn't make an encounter bad, it just makes you think on your feet. Furthermore, I really don't know how people can go on about "realistic" in a world of dragons and sorcery...
I think there's a difference between expecting the game world to work like ours does, where we don't have dragons and magic, and expecting a level of realism with the way weapons are handled. After all, these people are human, and appear very similar to us...it would be logical to assume that we can expect some of the same rules to apply, while allowing for some flourish to make things more interesting than real life.
