Hey all,

Just started and I'm pretty clueless how to go about building a bard. I started as a generic rogue and I'm only level 4 so I shouldn't have jacked things up too terribly. I have maxed out her conversation skills already though, as that's what's especially fun for me ;)

My questions are:
1) How do I unlock bard specialization (with as few spoilers as possible)?
2) What should I aim for as far as my final stats go?
3) Sort of related to 2, I'm noticing without adding any strength I can only use daggers at this point. Should I just stick with this, or will there be good weapons I should up strength for?

I also want to be able to still fill the rogue slot of picking locks and detecting traps. I had a character like this in NWN2 and it was a total blast, so I'm hoping this is possible here as well.

Any help would be fantastic. ^_^

EDIT: And I noticed in another topic that  people were saying taking the rogue skills yourself isn't necessary as you get companions...but I really enjoy being able to do it myself. This is purely a playstyle preference thing.

1: not that far in the game you will meet an npc, and if he/she like you enough he/she can teach you the bard spec

2/3: bard are rougues mainly, there are different ways to build rogues, you basically want to max dex and cunning, and to bring str to 21 in mid game to equip the best light armor. There are people that prefears to raise str more and use a sword/dagger combo, but i understood that you like to reoleplay a bard, so cunning makes more sense, and as long you use daggers there's a talent that make dmg calculations using cunning instead of str, so even if it's not the only way to build a rogue/bard, i would suggest to favor cunning over str.

That is extremely helpful. Strength and what I'd need to have to equip the best goodies was particularly what I was concerned about. Thank you so very much.

EDIT: Mild spoiler alert.

Can someone tell me if the bard unlock is past the village Morrigan suggests you go to at first? I want to make sure I haven't passed it. >_<;

You pick up the NPC that teaches you bard in that first village.   They won't teach it right away, you have to raise their approval first.   If you missed getting the bard, you should probably head back right away as there is a point where you can't go back to that village.

HMM. I just left it. Darn. -headscratch- I thought I'd done all the quests there.

It's not the female rogue companion you pick up, is it? Leliana or whatever?

It's Leliana, yes.

Well crap. Now I gotta decide between leaving my doggy Frisket home, leaving Alistair home and not getting to call him a whiny little boy, leaving Sten, who won my heart when he talked about elves "excelling at poverty" and leaving Morrigan who might be the only one my character actually gets along with xD;

Decisions, decisions. Thanks anyhow. ;)

You do know you can leave them at camp and you can switch between them? ;) after you learned the bard skill you can go back to your old party setup :)

You can also learn the bard skill at camp. Anyhow, her approval must be high enough ;-)

Yeah, got it unlocked last night and promptly dumped her. It was a little irritating to have to be sort of goody goody to get her to like me well enough. Had to deviate from character just to get the class I wanted, which shouldn't, logically, require a whole lot of scruples.

I love the bard specialisation, but generally use it in combination with ranger, and go as an archer (though mostly I have Leliana run that). Otherwise, bard can work well with duelist or assassin, though most who dual wield seem to go duelist/assassin.

Be careful with your stats, which ones you should boost and how much will depend on whether you're on the pc or console, and have/don't have the dex fix, and what version (patch) you have. There have been a number of important changes to the way damage is calculated for dual wielding rogues.

At base, though, the highest dps is with two daggers and a cunning build. The two daggers with dexterity build gives significantly lower dps - but also has phenomenal defence. All other dual wielding rogue builds, imo, are seriously less effective than those.

Well, I've been building up cunning as I like my smooth talking self ;) But the only other thing I've been putting points into is Dex at this point, so I should be okay.

I do have PC version and I did download the patch, so I'm good on the dex damage calculations thing.

Smooth talking is fun ! Sadly I missed out that on the first run. But coercion is something I take as a basic nowadays (not to mention you can intimidate with it as well, if you feel like it).

Cunning is an excellent stat to raise for Bard songs as well as backstabbing. Pick up Lethality from the basic Rogue talents, and go Assassin for your second spec to get Exploit Weakness.

You don't really need to put any points in Str. The best leather armour requires 20 and that is easily reachable without any point investments. Especially if you have the Stone Prisoner DLC.

Well, provided that you were thorough in your Fade explorations.
