I don't know if this has already been addressed, but when playing DA2, I missed the out-in-the-wild conversations the Warden could have with his/her party members in Origins. I loved being able to walk up to Sten in camp and argue with him, or listen to Leliana's stories, or talk to anyone else in camp for that matter.

In DA2, I grew tired of Hawke's companions' short greetings and phrases that never changed even after the time skips. I felt the characters suffered from the lack of dialogue. Sure, Hawke got the occasional blob of backstory/flirtation/snark from companions, but that's just what it was, a blob. For me, there wasn't a gradual, life-like feeling of getting to know the character like there had been in Origins.

Does anyone else miss free-range PC-to-companion conversations? Do you want them back? Are they being brought back in DA3? Or am I just being sentimental?

There both good systems and I would be happy with either of them.

First of all, it's been confirmed (repeatedly) by David Gaider that DA2 had just as much dialogue with companions (and party banter) as DAO. You just had less control over when it occurred.

And the developers have expressed a desire to give more control over companion conversation back to the player. They went into it at length at the PAX Panel earlier this year.

I'll admit I missed some of the free range with dialogue such as in Origins. But I also had a problem with that setup as well, I'd often exhaust that range long before the final quests and found my companions repeating the same conversations, and this got a little annoying. I admit the ability to interact freely with companions was cut down in DAII and I'd like to see more of it. Maybe spread out certain conversations (maybe make them relevant to current quests or the like) so I won't be stuck with the same "I have a question" "nevermind" dialogue like I had with Sten come the end of the game.

In DA3 we are bound to travel so some sort of camp/tavern will be required. So I think camp banter will also return... to some extent. + We're getting a castle. And if your companions are not allowed to stay there to chat with us it'll be hilarious.

Dalish companion: Why can't we stay inside?
PC: Because it's my castle and I decided so.
Dalish companion: But it's showing and I'm barefooted!
PC: Oh, so NOW you noticed it!

I'm not disputing the amount or quality of DA2's dialogue, just its style of delivery (as you said, less control). I haven't gotten around to watching that panel yet, so I'm glad to hear the devs have discussed, if not already implemented, more control.

I agree! Getting stuck in the loop of "never mind"ing all the companions was a problem of mine, too. A compromise between both systems might be a good idea.

Regardless of the dialogue system, I'm sure that DA3 will be a good game, if not great.

I don't really care either way, in DAO convos felt more like a chore I had to devote an hour to, to get the minor stat bonuses for the characters I was using. In DA2 they at least had context for the most part in what was happening in the "story" at the time.

I would prefer to see DAO's system, except with some indicator of when new dialogue becomes available. I didn't feel that interacting with the environment added all that much to DA2's conversations, and it seemed more distant when I couldn't talk to my companions outside their home bases, especially when the companions would chat it up with each other, just not with Hawke, regardless of where we were. However, it did get annoying in DAO to have to go back and check if new dialogue was available only to be disappointed.

Jeez, some of those lines were gems.

*WARDEN kisses MORRIGAN*
ALISTAIR "Excuse me while I projectile vomit."

*FEMALE WARDEN kisses LELIANA*
OGHREN "Could you move a little bit? I can't see as well from that angle."

Or another similar gem...

*FEMALE WARDEN hires PROSTITUTE*
PROSTITUTE "*insert sex joke here*"
*Fade to black*
*Moaning*
OGHREN (unseen) "Oops. Wrong room."

I'd like to see a system that takes into account where you are. If I'm milling about in Hightown and I want to give the Rivaini Amulet to Isabella, I should be able to without first going to the Hanged Man. On the opposite end, if I'm far into the Deep Roads and in between darkspawn battles, its probably not the time or place to discuss Flemeth with Morrigan. And, lastly, if I'm discussing the Eluvian with Merill, that's probably a conversation suited to privacy.

ever clicked on a copanion during a heated battle?

Alistair: I'd like to ask  you something a personal question.
Warden: Are you sure this is an appropriate time? (here in the Dead Trenches with a horde of darkspawn descending on us?)
Alistair: If I waited for the appropriate time I'd never get to talk to you about anything would I?
