Tonight heralds the dawn of a new decade, (I am aware some people have already seen the new year in, but bear with me). Out go the noughties and welcome along to the ... ten...ties(?)

I was thinking about the past decade while I was working today and it got me wondering how everyone else saw the last decade (and millenium) in, where were you? What did you do? I'm interested to see how different people from different countries and backgrounds partied like it was 1999.

Personally, I was 16 at the time and, thinking I was the coolest kid around, decided to drink far too much at my parent's works party (underage drinking is bad kids) and welcomed in the new year hurling my guts on a road outside. The next day was spent in bed feeling decidedly sorry for myself in a dark room.

I spent New Year's Eve 1999 with the worst flu I've ever had. I lay in bed with the tv on, drifting in and out of sleep, watching CNN and hoping that as each time zone clicked over, the Y2K bug would knock everything out. I knew absolutely nothing would happen, it was just one of those perverse little things that would have warmed my heart.

This year, like every other year, it's just another day. I'll throw back a few drinks, maybe play some Dragon Age, and go to bed at a decent time.

I don't remember what was going on 10 years ago. I was 9 that time. But still knocking on the stomach with lighter alcoholic drinks. What can I say, I started drinking early, and of course, one or two glasses of wine weren't that dramatic.

Today, it's just like another day. Am awaiting the gifts of grandfather frost (AKA my father) and see what I got. I'll be sure to post what I got, IF I will be satisfied of course.

I was twenty and spent the night at my future wife's house with her family. Her mum had bought all this year 2000 stuff like hats and plates and glasses. She even bought a tablecloth covered with "2000!". I couldn't help commenting to her that it was all going to be useless after that night.

It was my last New Year's as a single man and I didn't even go out.

Back then I was thinking, wow, we were close to 2001, a year I never thought I'd see. Now it's 2010, and another 'futuristic' movie (2010) will take place in the past.

I remember the Y2K thing but wasn't worried about it. Nothing happened in my part of the world on the next day. As to what I was doing, I have no idea. Probably gaming or watching movies. I tend to spend this time of year alone and socialize throughout the rest of the year.

10 years ago I was sharing New Year's Eve with my financee, if I remember we were at home, nothing remarkable happened (no crazy 2000 party, no crashing computer system etc.), 10 years later, we are married, moved house, have two kids. It's been an industrious decade, if a bit tiring.

This has been a ****ty decade all the way around.

It started with the election of a witless simpleton to the presidency. We suffered through eight years of the worst presidential administration in the modern era. 8.5% unemployment, a disastrous foreign policy, a doubling of the national debt and a net loss of 7 million jobs was George W. Bush's extraordinary legacy.

9/11

Hurricane Katrina

Michael Jackson died and I never got a chance to ride the ferris wheel at Neverland.

Not to mention the decade is coming to a close with the worst recession since the Great Depression. You can take this decade and give it back to the Indians. I don't want it.

As for what I did New Year's Eve 1999...I remember staying up late, watching TV and masturbating before going to bed.

10 years later I plan on staying up late, watching TV and masturbating before I go to bed. Progress.

I was 11. I remarked to my mother that it felt surreal that such a supposedly unique event had come and gone just like all the other New Year's Eves I'd witnessed.

I was 10. We celebrated at our Grandparent's house. The whole family was present. That's 20-30 people (uncles, aunts, cousins...etc.

I remember being scared ****less, thinking that the world would blow up. Naturally when it didn't, I was afraid it would happen at the start of 01! That's what happens when the wrong person in the family starts talking to you when you're only 9 years old.:alien:

1999 was the last Xmas I had with my relatives back in Canada. Had been living in Oz for 9 months prior to that, so I came back to Montreal to close down my apartment, say goodbye to my old life, and get most of my stuff shipped to Oz... 29 years of my life crammed into 46 boxes! And I remember Xmas eve quite well... The mad rush to get all them bloody boxes down at the shipping broker before 4:00pm!! Totally nutso!

What I remember most of 1999 was being healthy. I had a work related accident in 2003 and I've spent most of the last decade in workman's comp hell. Hopefully in 2010 I can finally get them to spring for my new knee and finally get back to work! They did pay for me to learn a new profession, so the last decade saw me in college getting a computer science degree. Now to get to work before it's outdated!!!

1999 seems like it was yesterday and yet thing where so different. I was a senior in high school and was starting to potentially consider the idea if getting engaged to my high school sweetheart in '01 or '02 (I plan ahead for big stuff). She was convinced that Y2K was going to revert us to the stone age. My dad spent the night watching the timer click by at work, nothing of not happened for him except for big time overtime. The ball dropped and the GF wanted to go check the ATM to see if the cash was gone.

Oh, those days as I look back on them fondly may not have been the Good 'ol Days, but they didn't totally suck. The GF is long gone, best decision I ever made and there is a massive career change for me. In school for the last time to finish up and the life long dream will be achieved.
