As I said in the other thread that didn't have as clear of a title, I am very doubtful this will be in game.

They have previously stated that one of the major reasons they will not give race selection is they don't want to design cinematics and armor for different body sizes and heights.

Yet another reason why all of the graphical advancements since NWN have been a waste of development resources.

This.

Also whenever these types of threads pop up on gaming forums, usually they are bing posted by people who want to play an obese protagonist. The thing is...an obese protagonist makes little sense for most RPGs. Someone who is out of shape is going to make a poor warrior, adventurer, or Space Marine.

well that makes no sense.

Neither is a rake of a woman. I'm talking about "build" a warrior female would not look like a rake.

not if Bioware did their job, so I see why you may be doubtful

They could do this and I would like it but I have a feeling it would suck. The only way I see it working is if they use the way Skyrim did with weight.

I think part of the problem is the game engine itself, for I don't really remember in any game using the Unreal engine to have multiple body types everything looks pretty much the same, it might be different now that they are using Frostbite, but I doubt it. The other problem is the resources available on the console are extremely limited so even if they are going to allow people to have varying body types I don't think it would ever look right, even with The Old Republic I believe the larger characters are all NPCs and the reason why they could even work with four different body types for each race was because its a PC game and they can handle more then what a console can handle. I am hopeful that a body type slider might be present on a game when the new consoles are released, but until then I would be highly skeptical.

This. I think it would take a lot of resources to implement. Think about all the armor models..

If games like Fable can do this, I can't see why DA can't. I can understand not being able to adjust height for cinematic reasons, but weight? I don't see how that is an issue.

Make it so BW!

Hugging would be awkward with a variably sized protagonist.

And carrying the other person.  Though when FemHawke carries her sibling to the Grey Wardens there's massive clipping anyway, so maybe that's not a strong argument.

edit:  One option I've proposed before is to allow the player to choose the skin texture and thus how toned the body would look.  That wouldn't have any animation issues.

:D FemHawke carrying her borther is priceless, his arm is the size of my head, and his bicep goes through my neck

Honestly, if the developers of Sims 3 (with its pudding faced dolls that make going to the store a fetch quest) could do it, I'm pretty sure Bioware could, with its resources. Though the amount of money the Sims makes dwarfs Dragon Age, by a lot. It just isn't a priority, and it isn't mine either.

Though I would like a less "busty" FemHawke (and mom! jeez, what a self esteem killer for those with small boobs out there). Boobs get in the way, contrary to popular belief.

And you sorta did get different "body shapes" based on the armor you wore in DA2 (Anders's arms vs. Carver's, or Aveline vs Isabela) but if you made him naked, he'd balloon like an inflatable doll, and Aveline's boobs would rapildy expand like she was getting the bends in her chest.

Since I don't imagine we'll get naked sex scenes, this is probably a non issue in the developer's minds (it would be anyway, but that would be the only place I could think of that would require suspesion of disbelief, i.e. holy hell, your arms/boobs are HUGE!)

NWN allowed heavy-set PCs.

I'm forced to ask whether gaining animation variety was worth the loss of this option.

To me, it was.

Also, it woudn't be a loss if developers spent time and money to make thsoe two things compatible. To me, that would not be worth the money that would be spent.

Sims did it, but I don't buy or play Sims. That doesn't interest me.

To each their own, I guess

Sure, I'd like to see something like that. I'm always a supporter of more customization, but mainly because it would be more realistic to add that option (height, weight, muscle etc) and would make for more uniqueness and diversity in the appearance of our character (even more so than the previous games, since whenever we played a human/elf/dwarf  you were always the same height and weight).

I would very much be in favor of sliders for height and weight! If that won't happen, then yes I would like a variety of body types to choose from. Make it happen Bioware!

Regardless of the answer, it's a question worth asking.  For each new feature we get, we shouldn't ignore the features we lose.  Gamers might not notice the features they've lost right away, because the new features are often pretty cool, but years later they might wonder why that old feature was taken away.

MMOs usually get away with lots more clipping than a AAA single-player game.

I still would like to choose my body type. Animations were only part of the problem for race making body types more doable.

3d animations dont work like that... it would screw up nothing. 3d models have IK bones that are attached to a 3d model and used. the animations wouldnt change. only if the person had different limb amounts or is drastically different in height would they need to attach a different bones to the character to match the height. THats why most of the time despite the characters in games being different models, they can share the same animations most the time if the same sex/ and or species.

this is the 10x thread on this subject... I even started one for DA2 and DA3. Answered a ton of them too
