I miss elevator sequences. They maintained the immersion unlike loading screens plus they were interesting from time to time.

I didn't have a 'main two' in ME1, but I went with Tali and Wrex for the end, as I wanted to 'redeem' their peoples in a way.
In ME2 it became more Thane and Legion for the end, but I know I avoided several of the characters more (Grunt, Miranda, Jacob, Zaeed, Tali, etc) for some reason.
ME3 I tried out everyone, tried to give EDI a chance now and then, and ended up with Kaiden (my m/m LI) and Javik for the end. Imagine the surprise I had when even Javik didn't join me for the ending...

I also used Garrus and Wrex for most of my ME1 playthroughs.
I've never even used Liara or Tali except Liara once for the Benezia fight just to see what happens.

I don't like taking the same two squaddies with me everywhere I go. I like to mix it up, take everyone out for some fresh air every so often.

I never took the same two squadmates everywhere, except when getting the achievements for it. I employed a common sense approach over personal preferences.

I love Kasumi, both from usefullness in gameplay perspective (improved Flashbang Grenade is amazing) and as a character. Too bad she doesn't have dialogue wheel conversations in cutscenes.

Haven't played ME1 yet, but once I pick it up for PS3 i'll most likely take Tali and Wrex with me everywhere. Mabye Garrus and Ashley as well. Can't really say yet, as I have no idea how it plays.
ME2: A lot of choice here. I usually mix them up, but I typically use Tali, Garrus, Grunt and Zaeed more than the others. I also use Legion, but you get him so late in the game that you only have about two missions with him before the Suicide Mission? Hardly worth mentioning. I never use Jacob or Samara, mostly because they're rather "meh" characters imo.
ME3: Garrus/Javik is my usual combo until the halfway mark. Once I pick Tali up from the Migrant Fleet, the second squadmate slot alternates between Garrus, Javik and occassionally James.

Liara was ridiculously OP in me1. Biotics cooled down independantly so her and Wrex were never far from my side. I've only ever played biotic characters but i used tali and garrus as well for decryption and hacking in me1. It forced you to balance your team. I wonder if the ps3 reboot will implement this?

Tried to mix it up as much as I could. But on the whole Tali and Garrus, since I was a Vanguard.

Ashley and Garrus were my two constant companions in ME1, and eventually in ME3 (when I could actually bloody have them both)
Ashley because she was hot, Garrus because I needed someone to decrypt stuff and because he had good combat skills as well. Little did I know he would become my favorite squadmate in the trilogy

ME1 Tali/Garrus
ME2 Tali/Garrus
ME3 Tali/Garrus
For some reason i gravitated twards them in the first game and just keep using them. I don't even know who i use when i can't use them yet. Just whom ever happens to be there i guess(sorry other characters).

I don't like the idea of the same 2 squadmates everywhere. Hell, I don't like the idea of only taking 2 squadmates on any given mission. Seriously, why can't I take all squadmates with me? Modern infantry squads (in the US, at least) contain 9 soldiers or 12 Marines. Even special forces units like 1st SFOD-D operate in groups of 4 to 6, sometimes more in direct combat missions. It's asinine that Shepard is limited to 2 squadmates, especially considering the great risks of his missions and the fact that he sometimes rely on the presence of a squadmate to survive. Not to mention that the Kodiak can carry more than just 3 passengers. More squadmates mean more situational awareness, more firepower, and a greater variety of countermeasures to deal with threats.
Seriously, wouldn't it make sense if your brought all your squadmates and split them into small fireteams? Off the top of my head:
Weapons fireteam: James, Garrus, Ashley
Tech fireteam: Tali, EDI
Biotics fireteam: Liara, Javik, Kaidan
If you don't have a full roster or you have an imbalance (i.e. no Javik or Kaidan), you can just group them together into less specialized combat fireteams.
Even if we are to assume that a UT-47A only has the capacity of an MH-6 Little Bird, I'm pretty sure the Normandy can support 2 Kodiaks. That should be plenty for all squadmates.

ME1: Liara & Wrex/Ashley (it is sometimes frustrating because nobody can open locked crates)
ME2: I tend to cycle between combinations of Miranda, Samara (Morinth in one of my playthroughs) and Kasumi
ME3: Liara & EDI/Vega
