Honestly, as disappointing as it is, we all knew that they weren't going to bring back race options due to the cinematic focus and the voiced character. It's just too expensive to have that many characters to voice acted for an PC.

Origins though....

This was what really grinds my gears. One of my favorite features of DAO was that playable character Origins. How you were able to begin in areas and meet the important npcs before you began the treaty questline. I felt more connected to that area as result. If I played the human Noble Origin, I knew how Rendon Howe murdered my family. If I played a dwarven commoner, then I already knew who Rica, Leske, and Jarvia were. If I played a Dwarven Noble, than I knew how and why Bhelen betrayed me and who Trian was. What if they made these Orgins non-playable? I would feel less eager to rush my dwarven noble/commoner back to Orzammar to get revenge on Bhelen or help him gain throne to give my sister and all Casteless a better life. I wouldn't feel an satisfied with killing Howe later on during the questline.

It's really silly for them to fight us on bringing that latter feature back, since unlike the former, they have little excuse for it other than time constraints/being lazy. Playable origins would be a much better compromise for the removal of race options than just giving us a non-playable one where we'd meet random npc's half way through the questline claiming to be our cousin or suddenly have this random person appear at the end claiming to have been my pc's best friend for years...

I agree. I enjoyed playing through the origins because I actually felt a real connection to my character's little backstory. In Mass Effect, when you start chatting with someone and they bring up the obligatory, "Hey remember when you did SUCH N SUCH years ago in your past?" my brain has to force itself to give a sh*t - which it doesn't.

Origins.

One day - I dream of a world where Main Protagonist games are revealed to be the antiquated tripe they are - and the Ensemble RPG is reborn.

In that vision - each Origin participates in the main storyline.

Think of it this way. If you played nearly all of the Origins in DA:O - and then, all those characters met up in Ostagar and traveled together through the game - THAT is the game I want. Can't say it's wasted resources if every Origin is used.

Races, by far. The origins could be interesting but won't have enough impact for you to not just roleplay through them if you happen to have races.

First Reaction: Origins.
Reason for First Reaction: I'd rather have quest content than visual customization.

Next Reaction: It depends.
Why the Second Thoughts?  How extensive is the reactive content for races?  If the reactive content for the races amounts to as much content as an origin would have, then it becomes a toss up and comes down to execution of the feature than to the feature itself.

Ultimately I want interesting content.  I'm open-minded about how it gets delivered.

Origins. Choosing a background for my character and then allowing them to grow with that as their base is a lot nicer than being an absolute clean slate with some dialogue variation later on.

With the way DA3 is gonna be, races hands down. The origins/backgrounds aren't even going to be playable, just change some factors throughout the game. Like being an elf would have done.

Hmm. After giving it some thought I would say, in a Bioware game, I would choose origins. Mostly because I'm likely to get more bang for my buck or more enjoyment out of a variety of origins than I would out just being able to choose a race. I do love being able to choose race... but origins wins.

Probably races.

Because human women are always shorter than human men, but sometimes there will be races where the women are taller than human men. Given as humans tend to be the most abundant race, that means I'll probably be taller than the majority of NPCs I interact with, as opposed to the default where I'm shorter.

And no, body types don't help. I've played TOR and the tallest woman is the same height as the shortest man.

You're basing this all on being taller than men?:P

An interesting question. I'm honestly torn. The origins (playable--not ME style) provide very different backgrounds to base your character's personality off of. This is possible of course on your own without the origins simply by writing it up yourelf, or keeping it in mind, but I personally take pleasure in working within the origins themselves.

On the other hand, having different races give the chance for very different viewpoints on the world, and thus increases personality possibilities.

I'm torn. If I had, HAD to choose between them, I'd say...

I guess races. I don't want to, I like the origins, but I feel the races give more possibilities.

Origins. You got both race and Origins in DA:O, but I'd far prefer having a human in each of DA's origin stories rather than having one origin for everybody, except if you're an elf or dwarf they just say you're adopted and pay it no further mind.

Races. I really enjoy being a Dwarf or an Elf. For me races add replay value and the different setting for each race makes things interesting.

Doesn't matter much to me, since both can be used to make the character more "your's" in the end.

That said, I found "origins" to be more effective, since it actually gives you a backstory to either play or reference, instead of races which offer a blank slate. For me, blank slate characterization is not the best method to play a story-driven game.

Origins.

I ain't playing a different race just to play a different race. I play it for the specific origin.

Race, by far. Origins are and were interesting but they don't reach the level of importance of racial choice, at least to me.

I'd much rather play a mysterious stranger type character with with a choice of race than be forced to play a more defined protagonist.

If they are well made and actually get mentioned or have some benefit and not just one extra quest i would choose being a human and have a origin. But if the origins are like what mass effect had i would rather have the choice of multiple races. As long as it gets mentioned that you're an elf or dwarf through dialouge so my character just doesn't have pointy ears for the heck of it.

Races
each of them bring something different to the game, if the games doesn't recognize the character elf or dwarf then... is a big fail to the story that that particular character was involved with, and game breaking experience for anyone who play as elf or dwarf.. think of Hawke casting spell in front of templars.. meh exactly my point.

I'll like to remind that elves ( city or dalish) are seen as second class citezen everywere in Thedas, to me Elves and Dwarves bring as much role playing as humans with their different back ground, cultures and histories.

I do not mind playing as a humans in a fantasy game as much to be forced to be an inquisitor that is part of organization that has or had ties with the chantry on top of that say organization allow mages in their rank... bah. someone has to takes notes and check the 'new" ideas they bring on, this ideas shouldn't destroy the Lore that has been already established in previous games.

I said and said again that becoming Inquisitor should be a player option and not to be forced into.
