My guy doesn't look sad. He looks more like he's thinking "I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am."

My female characters so far have looked absolutely stupid when forced into even the smallest semblance of a smile. So I've had to settle for the default neutral position. Still, you can work some expression into the eyes though. My previous avatar had sunken eyes for some reason, so she looked really weary and sad. This current one still has a bit of a sad look, but I think she looks more contemplative and peaceful.

I had some problems with my other characters smiles, for some reason it made them stupid as well, but it worked with the images I had of them.
I had more luck with this one, it is meant to look smart/charming and I'm happy with the result

This one was just from playing around. Only took a few minutes (after spending over an hour on my first!).
But I like it so much I'm trying to create a backstory for him--which I don't usually do. Probably have to edit him into a mage; doesn't look the younger brother type.

I think most of the expressions look too odd to use for the portrait, so I stuck with the default even though it does have a depressed edge to it. I think he's just sad from all the killing. Blood stains are so hard to get out!

I think my character looks cheerful, if slightly glazed. Fester Pot, your character has the best expression I've seen so far.

The eyes are most of it. You've gotta pick the right eye/brow shape and then set them in the right spot. If you don't set them high enough, they'll look worried, tired, or even sad. Sometimes mad.
It only takes a little tweak to make them look more alert but less worried though.

Even though it says on my character profile that my friend Seóran here hasn't slain a single enemy he looks awfully proud of himself.

<- Depressed.
But I figured that in a world full of killing and shiz, you gotta be a bit sad and worn out, right?

My avatar isn't sad, he is just looking at the buffet, that his guests are scavenging, and wonders if he is going to eat one of them, or to go berserk before eating the buffet.
