I think he's hysterical, even if a bit whiny. Certain parts of the game he makes me cringe, though. I've never quite seen spineless and stubborn in the same person to the extent Ali is written. If not for his charm, he's be a wandering drunk right now . . .

Jk, I think he's one of the best written romances I've ever played in a Bioware game.

How to handle Sten:

Choose dialogue options that sound roughly like, "Shut the **** up and do what I tell you."

Or give him paintings and leave his butt in camp (my route).

ah, i see, so Sten likes to play it rough.

but the reason i like Alistair is because he makes me chuckle sometimes, besides, he's not the only whiny one, Morrigan whines a lot as well.

You dislike him, many people like his character. It's called personal preference. There's no need to get heated about it.

Also, if BioWare ever started pumping out the trash that Square now calls "Final Fantasy," I will end my consumer relationship with them forever, as I did with Square. They fooled me into buying X, never again.

Not only does Alistair suck at fighting (seriously, he dies too quickly) but the final sequence just ticks me off. I almost never use him but his rants with morrigan are quite amusing.

I love Alistair. He and my Human Noble Warrior totally have a bromance thing going. Wise-cracking and murder ensues en masse. I only wish [Spoiler] had lived longer so we could keep making him roll his eyes with our antics.

Alistair whines a lot? Damn, I must be missing out on a lot of the game... Or maybe I haven't noticed because Morrigan whines constantly. For Alistair, I only notice his ridiculous and sarcastic comments. "Yes... swooping is bad."

It can get quite funny when you play a female char, having a romance with Al, are flirting with both Leliana and Zevran and have all three of them in the party. Poor guy... Gir'ls talk about his performance is the least of his problems.

As for Sten, he is a very deep character, coming from a different culture and trying to overcome the language barrier, of course he isn't that talkative and needs some time to trust you. Respect, including self respect is the key to Sten's heart. As long as you show interest in his culture, but neither question it, nor tell him what you think he wants to hear, Sten should be the first character you get to +100 approval.

Worst. Line. Ever.

Anyway, I dunno about Alistair. He has his good moments and his bad. Morrigan and Oghren banters are hilarious but too whiny and (self) righteous at times.

My biggest problem with Sten is that he sometimes disapproves so strongly if you just do the logical thing to advance the story, I have the feeling I have to skip half of the game if I want his approval to go up.

I dont know how you set him up but my Alistair never dies. I dislike using Sten because of that missing spec point early on and Alistair is the only proper tank option. And since I tend to go AoE happy and wipe my entire party he is usually the last man standing and finishing the job on his own.
I dislike the personality yes, but from strictly combat point of view he is very valuable.

Like helping Redcliffe? I always had a persuasion opportunity in such situations. When I used it, Sten approval actually increased; He didn't seem to be convinced, but he respects that things are different in this country and appreciates that my char cares to explain his motivations.

Yes. Sten actually makes sense. I don't have any trouble with him.

Alistair on the other hand... Yagh. Too bad there is no way to dump him early in the game. He stays in the camp and appears only in the game when the game forces me to or when it gains me some XP. ;)

i think DA:O has the best character personlities in any game i've played so far. all of them are very different from each others and doesn't seem like stereotypes at all. i love them all... except from Alistair!!

this is my second playthru and with totaly different character personalities. but even if i do almost the opposite from what my first character did, Alistair is still the one with the lowest approval rating.i've really been trying hard to get his approval, even showering him with gifts. and no matter what type of gift i give him he is like: "gee, thanks, i guess..." (even his mothers medallion gave me only +4). Sten is easy to get approval from. he tried to take over the leadership, and i kicked his ass in single combat. now he loves me!! ;-)

but alistair, all i can say: i'm so looking forward to kill him!!!!

That's not true! 99% of his ****y, whiny dialogue stays exactly the same post-hardening. Only a handful of dialogues actually change. And by the time you actually get to the point where's he's hardened, you've probably seen most of the whiny banter already anyways and can't be spared.

Right on! I get tired of all this "hardened Alistair is different" rubbish.

And that's all I'm saying. As a pretty pink Alistair fan, I'm getting out of here now Posted ImagePosted Image

Chalk me up as an Alistair fan then, I enjoy his company.

One thing I wish the game offered was an option, through early-on dialog options, to alter your companions to your fit your playstyle.

As an example, with Alistair, you might have dialog option(s) like the following early on:

"I like you well enough, Alistair, but all of this introspection is ... not helping. You need to toughen up and face facts."

OR

"Alistair, I know you have been through a lot. I want you to know I'm always willing to listen."

Either choice would garner equal approval ratings but also alter the NPC's personality from that point forward, depending on which Alistair you wanted.

Hmm, time to put some points in coercion then.
