That's a problem with how you are speccing him, not with his abilities to tank.

Sten "whines" by challenging The Warden to a fight - that's how awesome he is.

Alistair? I wish you could just stop him from following you like most other companions. I hate having to be forced to babysit this fangirl-friendly f*cker.

Sten and Wynne can be pretty whiny, too: especially Sten.



For a whine-free jaunt, Barkspawn is really the only choice. But a party of two is slightly impractical.

I generally like all characters I've found except Wyne.

She is the only one who can't be funny in conversations.



The best part for me with the companions is listening to their conversations.

Steve Valentine did some flawless voice acting on Alistair.



That said I also really hate Alistair. First playthrough my character was conscripted, I meet Alistair at Ostagar, he asks me "Did you want to be a Grey Warden?" I replied, "Nope. I still don't."



Alistair disapproves [-10]



He then nods and tells me a little bit about himself. Nothing at all to give me the idea that I seriously irked him.



So pretty much he was a punk who couldn't tell me to my face that he thought I was given a great honor and I should appreciate it... which is what he was thinking.

As far as I know, Alistair takes the biggest hits to approval during one part of the main quest if you're not a smooth talker and explain why you did something (before the OTHER event). -41 I believe? And even if you're a smooth talker, -21 or so.

I got -100 when I rejected his romance offer. Nearly knocked me off my chair because I laughed so hard about the way it was presented. I absolutely love Steve Valentine's voiceover. (Else: I have written a story for Alistair because I don't like the ending and saw a few other options. Should be enough evidence that I like the character very much.)

edit: Have to add that I absolutely like Sten. He is so logic when you talk to him and this also is a way for high approval rating. Never ask the obvious.

Did you put the poor guy in leather, or something? Slap the Juggernaut or Blood Dragon on his goofy ass and you've got an unstoppable leviathan of sass and steel!

Can you romance Alistair with a dwarf? Never tried that. (Elven mage and human noble so far.)

By funny, I guess it's not that funny to everyone... he's just acting like a little boy who's just been turned down. And the -100 really adds to that. (Bah, I never liked ya anyways. *standing in a corner somewhere with arms crossed*)

my first playthrough i played a character that always took the 'good/selfless' choices.  except at that special decision, i hated the Alistair character so much i let him do the deed instead of doing it myself.  Good ridence.

I really hated him at first. Bioware always has to have a **** guy in a game - Carth, Kaiden, now Allistair who puts them all to shame. But the second playthrough i decided to talk to him more so i can do all of the companion side quests - he isn't that bad. But i still don't like him. Just don't hate him as bad as i did before.

Nah, dog's the only funny character for me.

Alistair reminds me of my best friend growing up. God, he was a passive-aggressive judgemental mope. Other than that, he's fine I guess.

How can anyone hate Alistair, with such characters as Wynne and Sten present in the game. Imho Alistair is a pretty well written character. He and Leliana.
