Alistair is the Carth Onasi of Dragon Age. Nobody recycles characters quite like Bioware.
Exactly! I hated Carth so much, I can't stand self-righteous characters like that. When I found out that you could actually kill Carth, I stopped my other characters and did a playthrough just so I could kill him.

Seconded! Sorry, but Alistair dying quickly is nonsense. He's saved my squishy mage butt too many times to remember. Alistair + good massive armour + Shield Wall = unkillable darkspawn wrecking machine. A sensitive, slightly insecure darkspawn wrecking machine, granted, but still.Eruanna Guerrein wrote...

Not
only does Alistair suck at fighting (seriously, he dies too quickly)
but the final sequence just ticks me off. I almost never use him but his
rants with morrigan are quite amusing.
That's a problem
with how you are speccing him, not with his abilities to tank.
I
think it's funny to see how many people get angry because so many more
think he's the ****. Jealous much?

I generally like all characters

She is the only one who can't be funny in
conversations.
The best part for me with the companions is
listening to their conversations.
I'm sorry, but have you actually walked around with Wynne in your party? Face-to-face she's about as funny as Saddam Hussein, sure, but her party banter is among the most hilarious in the game. Take Oghren and Wynne and run around the entrance to the Dalish camp and eventually he'll offer her some ale:
Oghren: Why, Wynne, you're a woman after my own heart! If I wasn't strapped up in this armour I'd take you round that corner and...and--
Wynne: Give me more ale?

Yeah, I really don't understand how anyone can NOT end up with Alistair being the strongest fighter. Even if the PC is a sword and shield warrior, too, you still have to spend points on cunning and coercion that you don't with him. The fade mostly makes up for it, but not entirely. I suppose if you don't bother with cunning, but... Anyhoo, You get him so very early, you can level him up into a real power house. If Alistair dies, it's not his fault, it's his build. If you leave him in camp all the time and don't pay any attention to his stats, or improve his armor, yeah, he's going to die, but that's really not a problem with the character.

But the PC gets extra talent points at a few plot points, and can get tomes throughout the game to augment him in various ways. In my first playthrough, my character was sword/shield, and was basically a more powerful version of Alistair, though I specced them mostly the same.

*Spoilers alert*
Even at Redcliffe when he suggests to kill Conner, he still freagin' tells me off. The Landsmeet. however, was the breaker for me. Loghain is a better asset alive than dead and Alistair leaves the Grey Warden order because he has a damn tantrum, even goes against the words of the senior Grey Warden Riordan. If Duncan were there to witness he would be facepalming.
*Spoilers End*
Alistair sucks

Then again, I don't really have a problem with a character in long term mourning, and it's not like he brings it up in every conversation. It's just a "Man, I wish Duncan was here, he'd know what to do *frown*" every now and then, all of which can be remedied by a single dialogue option. Folks just need to loosen up. I'll admit that the Landsmeet decision kind of ticked me off in the sense that it was lacking a shade of gray, but whatcha gonna do?
Alistair is more of an impassioned buddy-cop character, in my opinion.

And you forgot the paladin from Neverwinter Nights 2 - Casavir was it. He was one of the romance interests and he was basically the same as Carth and others.
This thread has also failed to mention that all the lead female characters in Bioware games are basically the same. Morrigan is pretty much a marginally less annoying Bastilla as far as I can see. In fact, all Bioware females with the exception of Wynne (who I still dislike) are just bad imitatons of Viconia and Imoen from Baldur's Gate.
As for men disliking the guy and women liking him, I have to say that the women round here seem to have pretty low standards. If there were no Alistair then we would be hearing about how great Sten and Zehvran are. Meanwhile, the guys just appreciate anyone with breasts who is younger than Wynne and better looking than dog. No dialogue necessary.
