Examples:
- Three races.
- Tons of origins.
- Companions quite casually ''killed'' (Morrigan, Wynne, Alistair, Zevran, Leliana, ANDERS).
Many many many different outcomes, didn't offer much continuity for future games, hence why BioWare has to be ''very'' careful when dealing with The Warden and Morrigan, and this is also why they brought back Leliana to life because they later decided she fit the role to become an important character for the Dragon Age franchise. (Same goes for Anders).
_______
DA2 was a game that focused more on continuity (for future expansion (now cancelled) & future games), and less on choice (neccecary for proper continuity).
Examples:
- One race
- One origin
- The game can only end in two ways, Hawke disappeared after supporting either the Templars or the Mages, and Cassandra Pentaghast is looking for him, and Leliana for the Warden (apparently?)
- Only companion that is killable is Anders (if I haven't missed something major despite 5 playthroughs, that is). And that decision was probably made because they decied: ''Alright, Anders had his role in DA:A and DA2, he won't be a central character in the future anymore, so we can give the players the option to kill him at the end of DA2 if they wish to''
_______
So, what's my point with this thread? What I'm trying to say here is that BioWare is kinda trying to avoid the situation they were in after DA:O, there were TONS of different outcomes, because they gave the players ''too much choice'' in certain issues (this is atleast how I see this, maybe BioWare doesn't believe they gave the players too much choice at all, but that's the understanding I've gotten from their approach in DA2). Why have a save import feature if continuity is rolled over in the next game, right?
Some might argue this applies to choices aswell, and that is what save imports truly should represent, but fact of the matter is that in order for BioWare to make a game where all the different choices we made in the former game truly matters in the next, they need to have a 10x larger budget, MUCH more development time, and 70% of the content or so won't be playable in one playthrough, because of the so many different outcomes of the former game, this is also the reason why I believe BioWare decided not to continue the Wardens story in DA2 but instead decided to focus on someone else.
My personal opinion and hope is that BioWare closes some thread plots (or keeps them going, and decides to close them in a future expansion, DLC or game perhaps) that started in DAO, this would perhaps require more development time or re-prioritizing money, but I truly believe tons of people want answers and closure (I'm specifically thinking about Flemeth, Morrigan & the Warden (and their potential child). And that they AFTER that, chooses the same path they did in DA2, focus more on continuity rather than freedom of choice.
ps: I personally preferred DAO over DA2.
Post your throughts and please be constructive and civil.
