Just finished this here game. Here be my thoughts:
SPOILERS!!! BEWARE!!!
LIKESThe Story - Unlike Ezio's tale, which was a straight up good vs evil, black and white battle the Assassins and the Templars, the story of Connor is morally grey in spades. Are the Templars really evil? Do the Assassin's do more harm than good in their fight? Even the struggle for American Independence is presented as a grey area as the victory of the Patriots over the British may not be a good thing for many reasons. This is a complex tale of moral ambiguity that the first
Assassin's Creed tried to present but failed to do.
Connor (Ratohnhaké:ton) - I liked Connor. He may lack Ezio's rougish charm and leadership, but he more than makes up for it with his strong will and unwavering dedication to his cause. And he's no arrogant ahole like Altair, preferring to handle his affairs with a humble demeanor. But it's good that the game is not afraid to portray his strengths as negative qualities, as a number of his Templar targets point out. I hope we get to see other titles starring him.
Haytham - I'd just like to point out, the revelation behind Connor's father left me flabbergasted as much as anyone. Despite his Templar allegiances, Haytham actually turns out to be very likable. He's probably the only Templar we've had second thoughts about killing.
The Frontier - My favorite area in the game. I'll admit that traversing it at first seemed daunting, but big kudos to Ubisoft for making it an area ideal for free running. While I think the Open West of Red Dead Redemption is still the better open world environment, the hunting minigame is better here.
Naval combat - Awesome. The best new addition to
Assassin's Creed franchise. I'm amazed by how the captured the feel of ship to ship combat. Can we ask Sid Meier to make a new Pirates game with this engine?
Homestead - What Ezio's villa should have been. I also enjoy the people you invite to stay there to build a community. Their personal missions are great.
Improved Gameplay - Thank god free running is much better this time around. And the combat is a joy.
DISLIKESBugs Bugs Bugs - Ugh. I know open world games being prone to bugs is a given, but the ones in AC3 are particularly grating. Not enough to ruin the game, but c'mon Ubi, hurry up and fix them.
Desmond's story - Let me say it out loud, I thought the ending was lame. But it's not a dealbreaker like
Mass Effect 3. After playing every
Assassin's Creed game on consoles, I take such WTF conclusions as part of the series charm. Truth be told, I've never really cared for Desmond's story. So it's no biggie for me that he met such an end. But allow me to say that I take Ubi's word that he's dead with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure Desmond will appear yet again in future AC titles.
Lack of historical cameos - In comparison to Ezio, Connor hardly hangs out with the famous people of his time. The only person he has extended interaction with is Samuel Adams. I wanted more scenes with George Washington or perhaps Benjamin Franklin.
