I've played this game for quite a while now, though I've never finished one playthrough, and this is what happens in my latest attempt.

Following the dual with Loghain at the Landsmeet Chamber, the conversation immediately starts to lag and then the game freezes entirely. This happens at the point when Riordan enter the conversation with the offer to take Loghain in as a Grey Warden. The lag/freeze is impossible to wait through. At first it's just lag, but immediately after the first conversation choice it's just frozen.

All the other conversations/gameplay cutscenes were fine until this point. I've played with max settings all along with no lags/memory leaks of any sort of things before. There were occassional crashes, but those were avoided (more on that later, though I doubt it's related)

And yes yes I have all my drivers updated, etc...

Here are my system specs:

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits Edition Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600Intel® Core™2 Quad  CPU   Q9450  @ 2.66GHz, 2670 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Total Physical Memory 4.00 GBTotal Virtual Memory 204 GBPage File Space 200 GB
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
    driver version 8.970.100.3000
Sound: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device) 6.1.7600.16385

Game version: Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition retail (patched to v.105)
DAOrigins.exe  v1.05
DAOriginsLauncher.exe  v1.01
DAOriginsConfig.exe  v1.03
Uninstall Dragon Age.exe  v1.03

mods installed: I will list them, but as I will state later, uninstalling all of them had no effectArmor of the Black Fox
Helm Removal
Extra Dog Slot v.1.41
Morrigan Restoration Patch
Leli SA Armor
The Icon Project v0.24
Smarter Party
Battle Animation
Deathblow
Improved Atmosphere
Plus Healing Received Fix-573
More Hairstyles
PTs Vibrant Colors 1.31-153
various other character, hair, armor morph mods

Here are the things I've tried so far (non of them helped)
  • turn down all specs to minimum, disable sound, disable soundcard in device manager
  • disable all mods, DLCs, uninstall Dragon Age toolset
  • as this is probably a scripting error of some kind, I reloaded to start and finish other side quests before entering the royal palaces
  • tried entering the Landsmeet Chamber with different squamates
  • had all the ATI CCC's (catalyst control center) option use application settings, disable Catalyst AI, disable adaptive Anti-Aliasing, disable Triple buffering
  • added -dx9 after the shortcut target
  • restarting game, computer (obviously), the freeze is very much repeatable
To continue from above, there were occational crashes before, though unrelated, I'll list those I rembember just in case.
They started appearing some 10hours of gameplay before this thing. They mostly appear during combat sequence, the one I remember when Alistair casts holy smite. There were also some random crashes shortly before Landsmeet Chamber, but they were random and unrepeatable.

Also, another bug worth noting. I used bows to defeat Loghain in the dual, somehow the combat ended with him just standing by the side and I can have a conversation with him as if he were a companion. I have never gotten him as a companion and haven't made the decision yet obviously. And the scene just gets stuck there, with everyone standing around, and no way to defeat Loghain, since, he's just standing there waiting to be talked to. Worth noting that conversation with him had no problem, no lag, no freezes, as it is with all other conversation before that.

Another thing. After many tries, I finally managed to get through the post-dual conversation by frantically clicking on the esc button to skip through it all. HOWEVER, the conversation follows starts to lag and then freeze almost immediatedly, I can't even skip it through with esc button, it's just too laggy.

So here we go, let me know if anymore info is needed.

:pinched:I want to finish the game!!!!!

update: Just tested, it also makes no difference who is the one that dual Loghain, that includes Alistair. The game still lag then freezes after that.

I've had the same problem! No sure how to fix it though, looked everywhere on the forum, there's just no definitive work around. And threads on this are at least a year old, most of them are 3 years old. I don't think you'll be getting any help here.

Personally, I never finished the game because of this. So here's to hope for both of us.

Sorry, folks, but in @gw2005's case it seems painfully obvious-- if you mod the game extensively, and then it doesn't work right, then it's likely the mods are the cause of the problem.

In many cases, third party mods will alter game files, so even if you"disable" them, you'll still run into issues.

The only solution is to *completely* uninstall the game and reinstall without mods.

But it's just that one dialogue in the entire game? How does that work? Installing all the mod took a lot of time you know:(

Ok, I'll try that, thanks for the clarification. Good to get info from someone a bit more authoritative than some 3 years old thread.=]

Also, if the save game already included the mods, would force loading it still cause problems or do I have to start over?!

Don't know.  It's been a long, long time since I've played that part of the game.  Is this the scene where the conversation is happening on the floor of the great hall, wih all the NPCs around you?  I suspect the lag is being caused not by a problem with the conversation mechanic but because everything is being rendered, including a lot of background charaters and characters "off camera" with resource-intensive mods installed.

Have you tried to play that scene on absolute lowest graphics settings and painfully-low (like 800X600 or less) resolution?  With persistent gore off, etc?  You may be able to suffer through it that way.

That I do not know.  If this is a file corruption issue, and not just a massive amount of mods taking your system in this scene... then it's possible the save games are "broken" no matter what you do.  Bottom line:  your mileage may vary.  But I am sure it's a mod issue, or a mod/system resources issue, at least.

Well I'm back, I've spent a good couple hours reinstalling everything again. I installed most of the mods back. (ones that makes sure half of NPCs aren't naked<_<)

So I reinstalled my game, tried my save game (a long list of dlcs and mods that weren't yet installed poped up)
it worked like a miracle. I was overjoyed:P

Then I installed Awakening (which I haven't even started yet btw) and restarted my computer

I then installed all the DLCs, some of the mods, and tried it again. Still works.B)

I'm not sure what happened still, maybe it is a file conflict issue with a certain mod that I haven't yet installed. I hope not tho... Maybe the problem is with the items I've created with the toolset, tho I don't know how that would impact a specific dialogue in the game...

I'm just happy it's now working out and I can finish my game.

Also, yes, I did try to go over that scene with the lowest possible setting (i'm sure i was in the first post I said it... hmmm), so I don't think it's a graphics issue at all. And since most of the resource intensive mods are installed back and it's still working out fine on max settings (as it was before), I just don't know what's wrong... sigh...

Thank you very very very much for the help. I was bout to give up on this game before you suggestion to reinstall it. I guess I was just lazy.

Issue is resolved now:O. Thank you all.

EDIT: don't close the thread yet, something might happen down the line with this issue... I hope not but you know...:bandit:

Glad you're making progress. Your smiley faces seem to be of a happier variety now.
