So I have made about 30+ characters in my tenure of owning ME 1, though only three are active. The others were deleted. My problem is that even with the game saves gone, the names of ALL OF THEM are still listed and it's a little irritating. When given the option to delete, it SAYS deleting but they are still there. How can I delete all my obsolete games from my list so I don't have to run through 30+ names everytime I switch active careers?

Are there empty folders for those deleted characters still in the game folder? If so then maybe deleting them in Windows Explorer.

It's for the Xbox version, not PC

I just went through this, if you have a USB stick then you can solve the issue.
Read the thread I posted first just to make sure you're in the same situation I was. I have a link in my thread that goes to the steps I followed. I'll explain it a bit here too. The method involves transferring the career files to a USB stick (you can't access the career files any other way) and deleting them from there.
Edit: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/107/index/14579015 <-- my thread
1) This is all-or-nothing, you will have to delete all your careers and not just a select few (note, not the save files).
2) If you don't have a save file for the career on your XBox 360, the career will be permanently lost after doing this transfer to the USB stick and wiping the USB. This is probably what you want but as I mentioned it's an all-or nothing method.
3) If you do still have the save files for the careers you want to keep, all you need to do after wiping all of the careers from your XBox is reload that save file from the Saren Fight (since that's where it should have last saved) and upon beating the game you will get the career file back and ready to import to ME2, or reimport to ME1 if you wish.
So, you will have to face off against Saren 3 times to re-create the career file for those 3 active characters you have. But at least everything else will be gone.
Let me know if that makes sense. I can try explaining specific questions if you have any.

Did wonder when I replied but figured it's a 50:50 chance. Shame the forum doesn't have something to indicate what platform we're all on without looking through profles.Ruina Fang wrote...
