For some reason, I decided to play DA2 again. And I was reminded of one of the constant annoyances about the game - the camera. Now I'm not talking about the fewer angles or views compared to Origins (though at times that lack is definitely an inconvenience). I'm talking about the camera not staying where I want it. It seems to be very difficult to go to first person view, or whatever it's called, if you move away from it. I have even tried saving and reloading and when I reload the angle is somewhere in voodoo land.

I don't know if using a different engine means this will change anyway, but please make sure that are cameras are more stable. Sorry, just had to vent. And I wanted to make this point while it's fresh in my mind.

And while I'm here, I might as well mention another peeve. When I level up I want to see the character's real stats, not what they are with amulets, runes, etc. I can make more intelligent decisions about my players and what items to give them if I see their unenhanced stats. Thank you.

I saw Mike tweet earlier that they want the tactical cam back but right now it's presenting many problems for them.

This is a big red flag for me personally because it's the main reason why targeting is so difficult in DA2. AOE targeting is an absolute nightmare in DA2. The fact it also automatically locks under an enemy makes it difficult to precisely place AOEs where I want to. This was something that really PO'd me in DA2 and I hope they fix it in DA3. Why didn't they allow you to detach the camera and flow freely so you could target better?

An easy solution for PC players is tactical camera...but it doesn't appear this will be "easy" for them. Therefore, I'm not getting my hopes up for it and I'm expecting it to be axed.

Another easy solution for PC players is to remove the automatic locking with a shift key, which is what they did via patch.

Never knew that. I only played through DA2 twice at retail and then never played it again. Was it a later patch?

Still, I don't see how that would fully fix the targeting problems. Based on how the camera was placed, it would be hard to properly AOE targets across the map. Not allowing you to freely move the camera and detach it from the player wasn't very smart, IMO. At least for mages.

To be fair, yea it was the last patch (or one of the last, I don't remember), after 99% of players had stopped playing. But we are talking about possible solutions for DA3, here.

In my experience the tactical camera was only really useful for resolving the target lock issue, and only useful for mid-range spell placement since it had such a steep angle and there was a limit to how far you could roam the camera. But the shift key solution resolves the target lock issue at any distance, so it makes me very happy and I hope they keep it. But I understand some people may prefer the tactical camera not just to solve a problem, but because they like that vantage point better. I don't.

Yeah, I had no problems, I just adapted with it.

I'm glad they're at least looking at it already. Now that I am not in mid-frustration I suppose it's fair to say that while I could usually work around it, there are times when I'm in a tight spot and can't. Then it's not just annoying, it's really, really, really annoying.

I didn't know about the shift feature, I'll take a look at it. Thanks for the info.

P.S. I'm curious, don't any of the games using Frostbite 2 have a tactical view?

If there's no isometric option, this is without a doubt a bargain bin buy for me. I'm not going to deal with fighting the camera again.

On the plus side, at least Laidlaw isn't boldfacedly lying to us about the camera this time. I don't give a damn about Frostbite. Gameplay comes first.

I never knew about the shift key either. Guess I should start reading what the patches contain. I had trouble going up flights of stairs, the camera always seemed to tilt at the wrong angle. Thanks for the info, I'll try it and see what happens.

He wasn't bold-faced lying about the camera. The post people usually take umbrage with was when the status of the camera was still in flux, and he indicated as such in his post.

Main issue I had with the camera in DA2 was actually out of combat. I thought that the camera was a little too zoomed out from the party in non-combat situations and too downwards-looking - a shame since Kirkwall looked best when looking upwards.

I was happier with the default camera position in DA:O. The reason for zooming out farther in DA2 was probably due to things like low level resolutions on NPC faces. Regardless, in DA3, I'd like the default camera position/zoom to properly allow us to admire the scenery and feel closer to the party. Perhaps it could automatically zoom out more when entering combat to make controlling the field easier.

Had no problem with camera so far.
Could target AOE spells just fine.
Played both games on Ps3. no issometric for me but i would love the issometric Baldur's gate too.

In the Game Informer article he flat out said that they were making a "Tactical Camera 2.0".  That was a lie.  There is no "Tactical Camera" in DA2.  You can scroll out a bit, and apparently they added detachability a few months after I stopped playing the game.

Could you cite it? Is it this Game Informer article? Because they're referencing the post I was talking about, including the comment about flux capacitors there at the end.

They added that too? Geez, I need to play DA2 again. Sounds like they improved the combat a lot...

I wish those features made it into retail...I might have more hair on my hairline...

I did play the two DLC packs when they came out but I never noticed detaching the camera or pressing shift to get rid of the lock. But I only played the DLC when they came out. Maybe I should start reading patch notes...

When I played the DLC I remember noticing the gore was toned down a bit too. Not sure if that was a DLC thing or a patch...

That's what I've heard.  I'm not sure if I've even downloaded that patch yet because I stopped playing the game well before the first DLC even came out.

They never added detachability via patch. I think there was some confusion over some ps3/xbox360 gameplay videos where the way targeting for spells works vaguely resembles a detachable camera (but it's not really the same thing).

I was talking about the Game Informer magazine article from August 2010.  The "visit" that GI were referencing in this quote from the article you provided

"When we visited BioWare for our cover story, we were assured that PC players would benefit from the console version’s upgrades, though they’d still be able to enjoy the same tactical gameplay and presentation from Origins (similar to the classic Baldur’s Gate) if they preferred it."

and when they said "That’s contradictory to what we were told on our visit."

I guess they did make statements to that effect-- even before his clarification post later, which was still months and months before release. I would suggest that it was simply an overreaching statement based on their direction at the time, rather than a lie.

I won't mind if the tactical camera returns, but I won't use it, except maybe for AoE-targeting. My first time through DAO I played the entire game with the tactical camera view. The second time through I used the close up camera (or whatever it is called) to get used to it before DA2 was released and I was almost immediately hooked. The game feels so much more immersive (to me) when you are close to the action instead of watching it from above. I am glad they removed the tactical camera from DA2, for the simple reason that I never would have tried playing without it otherwise, not in DA2 and not in DAO.
