If you want to play the game through on Nightmare then go right ahead. I enjoy collecting achievements so I'd really like not to see an achievement for playing the game on Nightmare. I gain something and you lose nothing. Why does this bother you?

Actually you lose nothing and he loses a possible achievement.

An achievement would be nice but it's quite unnecessary because only real gamers play on nightmare and that's a reward in and of itself.

Why thank you. I do so like having my gamer card revoked due to not wanting to spend hours on one fight. Image IPB

On topic: While I was tempted to try Nightmare Mode in Mass Effect, I can't see myself enjoying it in Dragon Age. Mostly because I'm not one for tactical gameplay. I run in, bash at everything and hope I come out alive.
But I think an achievement is a nice idea for the people who do play on the highest difficulty. It's a reward for them and I never cared enough to let it bother me that I won't be gettig that particular 'trophy'.

Hours? Proper Tactics and preparation should narrow that down to 15 minutes ;)

I'm pretty sure "hours" was an exaggeration, but depending on the fight it can like a while even with a sound strategy. I'm a real gamer, however I don't usually play a game on the hardest difficulty unless there's something to gain out if it other then a big head.

Let us not forget challenge and skill improvement as well.Playing on nightmare from beginning to end puts one in a survival mindset, which forces one to put extra care into builds, tactics, armor, accessories, combos, party groups and supplys.

Playing on easy and being able to just bash your way through the game only diminishes skill as there is nothing to challenge the player.

@ Bolded:Nope, a vet would take everything the game has to throw at them and still come out on top.Origins on easy gave the player small mobs of monsters while cranking it up to nightmare would make that same mob a bit larger.

You could bash your way through on normal, however tactics make it much easier. True, Nightmare forces you to think outside the box and come up with some good strategies, but what good would these strategies do me if I'm just going to play on Normal after I've had my challenge? Remember, you can bash your way through on normal so advanced tactics and strategy wouldn't be needed.

@Bolded: Nope, this an opinion and I dismissed it. A really gamer plays for the pure enjoyment of the game and nothing else. Before someone attempts to turn that around on me I'm going to say that I enjoy collecting achievments. Image IPB

Ah well, this doesn't really matter since we all know that Bioware won't do it. They have never done it before with DA games so I don't see them doing it now.

See the interesting thing about a gamer is that they come in all shapes and forms. Some play games for the challenge, others for story, fun and other reasons. Doesn't make them less a gamer regardless

I mostly play on a difficulty 1 level lower than the highest one and if I feel confident enough in my gaming powers, can go total hardcore on my arse, coz well, the girl likes a challenge! However it can be rather stressful and adding an achievement only puts on extra pressure.

Most people play video games for fun and I don't see how completing a game on hardest difficulty level for those who are "whoring cheevos" but still enjoy the game for the story and such will bring this joy to the masses.

Hardcore gamer does not need an achievement to prove s/he is hardcore. ^_<

Why not ? Achievements are supposed to give a challenge after all.

That said I'd most likely be unable to get it, requires too much preparation and tactics which I'm not really fond of, compared to Mass Effect's insanity where you just have to be more careful.

Effectively making your skills lax as they are no longer needed? I can't see the bright side in that.

No no no and no again.

Achievements like that are stupid. I'm not going to play a complete Nightmare playthrough just because I want to get a final achievement. Besides I never play high difficulties, I always play casual. Why work hard when you can do it easy.

Because I like to always get every achievement in games?

So you balk at difficulty but still expect to get all the achievements?

"I want all the achievements, so don't make achievements for things I don't want to do!" is... a really stupid position.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with playing on Casual. There's also absolutely nothing wrong with never siding with the templars. I don't complain that I'll never get that achievement, because I'm totally okay with "this achievement requires that I do something I'd rather not do."

If you look at achievements as something you need to get, then you need to be willing to do what it takes to get the achievements. It's absolutely and entirely unreasonable to expect the achievements to be tailored to you and you alone.

I'm all for it. If anything, they should take out achievements where you have to collect a bunch of stuff.

I have come across plenty of games that allow you to get all achievements without having to complete it on the highest difficutly. Your talking right now as if I'm the only person who doesn't like difficulty achievements. Well I'm not.

Not quite.

She's saying all of you are wrong.

And I agree.

The only time I would be opposed to a nightmare achievement would be if it unlocked special content, like a cutscene or what have you. But Dragon Age has never done this, so I don't think I have reason to worry. OR DO I--

Anyway I agree with ish, if you want to unlock achievements... you should do what is necessary to unlock them. Me, I could give a hoot about little virtual pats on the back.

Achievements are great because they give me something to do after I have already finished a game. Like right now, I am preparing for Assassin's Creed 3 by solving all the puzzles and unlocking the achievements in earlier AC games. And let me tell you, some are quite hard. Some take me a very long time to unlock and it is okay. Being challenged and having to work and earn something is not a bad thing. One AC achievement required that I kill 20 guards without taking a single hit of damage. That took me about an hour and I felt great unlocking it. I am working on another where I have to get through an entire level without falling once, which I have attempted over a dozen times so far unsuccessfully.

The argument of "I don't want achievements that are hard to unlock" is nonsense to me. Achievements are at the most meaningless when they reward something that is not a challenge to unlock. Achievements shouldn't just be "you followed the main game story line and inevitably unlocked achievements." Achievements should be rewarded for doing more than just the status quo in a game, for going out of your way to solve a puzzle or overcome a challenge. And there is no better challenge in a DA game than a hard/nightmare difficulty playthrough.

If we are going to go hardcore and have a real Nightmare mode then I would like the following:

Only one save slot allowed.
Permadeath (PC dies then it is game over and you roll a new character)
If an NPC dies then that NPC is lost for the rest of the game.
Remove instant regeneration of health and mana.
Cool down on potions and spells double
Poison, disease and injuries dramatically affect attributes.
No potions or injury kits above lesser.
Put in food, water and weight requirements

That would be my idea of Nightmare.

There should be a new game + instead with the option to carry over gear, and levels, or both seperately.

I liked it with the DA:O DLC (Golems of Amgarrak, Witch Hunt) where the Hard/Nightmare achievements were linked to the boss battles only, so you could just switch difficulties before activating the fight.

NG+ could help to bridge the gap on achieving maximum levels without exploits? Heck i remember that Da2's level cap was 50, but it's impossible to reach without the exp. exploit.

I personally do not have a problem if Bioware decided to attach an achievement/trophy for beating the game on Nightmare, although I'll admit that I'm biased since I typically play their games on Insanity or Nightmare exclusively (so it would just be a bonus to the way I already play).

With that said, I'm not really an achievement/trophy player (i.e., I don't normally seek them out); I've only gotten 100% on achievements or trophies with a few games, and those were by simply replaying those games since I enjoyed them.
