I've never worked a game with tactic slots or anything like it, but my first impression is that they are confusing and worthless. Frankly im too lazy to tweek them but i just want to be reassured that they arent necassary. Do they really help at all or are they just there to make yo ufeel more in control?

Tatic slots help the ai make your party members do stuff when you're not controlling them. You can get them to use pots, activate abilties, etc.
What I mostly use them for
-reactive sustainable abilties after they're knocked out in combat
-use pots if hp, mana drops below a certain point
-healing spells from mages
You don't need to use the tatics really through, you can just do a lot of micromanging if you prefer. Certain abilities (ex. aoe) are better done yourself and the tactic system has some limitations.

Good explanation of the tactics system: dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Tactics

Personally, I just use tactics for a select few skills. For example, my Mages are almost always set to heal anyone under 50%, rejuvenate fellow mages, auto chug lyrium potions and use a handful of non-aoe spells like Winter's Grasp on appropriate targets. For AoE spells like CoC or Fireball, I always manually cast them. I only changed tactics options when I decided to try automating some new spell - I didn't swap out tactics between fights or anything, since I stuck to simple, generic spells like Heal for the most part that are used the same way across the board.
Warriors and Rogues get less use out of tactics, in my experience, maybe because I never bothered to figure out how to use tactics to change targets effectively. Aside from a handful of skills like Heal (which works splendidly with (self/ally)
If you're on PC, you may wanna check out the Advanced Tactics mod - it unlocks some useful new trigger conditions like At Least X Allies Are Wounded (great for triggering Group Heal) and a bunch more. Another good one is the Dragon Age Mutator option (DA Mutator is a 'modpack' with dozens of separate individual mods, you can install all of them or just some) to grant 25 tactics slots on levelup so you don't have to deal with swapping out tactics between fights because you don't have enough slots for everything you want to automate.

Is it worth investing in additional slots whenever possible?

Tactics are essential. Re your question about worth of investing in additional slots whenever possible, the answer is not straightforward:
Your tank needs very few slots so don't bother.
Your main PC probably won't need many slots either, but it depends on your class and how often you let him/her run on autopilot instead of you manually controlling it.
Your mages need the most. Especially your healing mage.
Finally, if you're on the PC platform you can load an excellent mod by Phelon called More Tactic Slots per Level that will prevent you from having to waste skill points buying more tactics slots. I feel that Phelon's approach is frankly more balanced. Bioware's default number of slots they unlock as you level up is too stingy, IMO.
I also recommend the mod Advanced Tactics, since it fixes many bugs with Bioware's default system and enables your player-controlled character to run its tactics too unless you are physically moving him from point A to point B.
And yes, read the above-linked Wikia article on tactics. It explains everything you need to understand and use them effectively.

Tactic slots are also VERY useful for getting achievements.
Let's say you want to earn the achievement "Battery".
Set for all characters with a shield and the talent "Assault" the following tactic:
Enemy -> Health < 25% -> use talent: Assault
