How should they be? What do you want them to be? etc.

For me that would probably be:

1) interesting characters with interesting backstories and their own point of view
2) LIs
3) unique specializations for each of the party members

-Deeper consequences to disagreements in decisions/choices other than "Morrigan disapproves -5," such as maybe losing the party member, etc. Though, at the same time, I want to be able to, if not change their minds, at least earn their respect enough for them to stick around (kind of like Sten!).

-More meaningful and "getting to know you" dialogue like I felt we had more of in DA:O. If my PC is fighting alongside these other characters, I want to get to know them, I want to truly care for their well-being, and I want to know why and if they truly do have my back other than their own self-preservation instinct or motive, etc. (if that doesn't make sense, sorry (: )

How about we don't call them squadmates. Hasn't ME done enough to DA yet?

This poster pretty much said exactly what I was going to.

One thing i would like is to tell them to go if i don’t like them so i don’t have to see them like in DAO.

Pretty much this! Though I would like to add that I would love to see my companions react more to what my character is. Is my character a bloodmage? Then have any Templar companion be rather wary of my character. Even if they're just a normal mage, let's have a couple of different conversations with the possible templar companion! Same goes for mage companion verse the PC being a templar.

....Other than that, I'm the terrible person that mentally turned the title of the thread into a double entendre. *coughs*

How about not telling my male PC to bone every male squadmate in literally every convo we have. Starting with that in mind should free up enough dev imagination to come up with some backstory and personality.

Hah, yours isn't the only dirty mind, believe me.

I agree, I would love my companions to react to what PC is.

I may not be able to recall each and every instance, but I think the only times class is mentioned is when you're asking abount a certain character if they would teach their specific abilitites to another (like say, Alistair telling your mage or rogue he couldn't teach them the Templar ability because he would need to teach this to another warrior, or Morrigan's shapefiting, etc.)... But even this is not very reactionary.

There was only one moment that your class brought on some other type of reaction and that's only if you play a female warrior Cousland (Rendon Howe makes some sort of snide comment about this to your dad when you first meet him).

Lol my initial thought when I read the title of the thred was "they're party members, not squadmates!!!"

That aside, I just want BioWare to bring what they always bring, an interesting group of people with nice variety and with their own unique viewpoints, skills, backstories, etc. etc. In short, more of what BioWare did in the first two games.

1. Don't make romance a sure thing!
2. Don't make recruiting every character a sure thing!
3. Um, just those two things will pretty much do for me, but especially the first one.

I wrote "squadmates" because for me "squadmates", "companions", "party members" are synonyms. But english is not my native language, so it seems I just have gotten it wrong. It was the first word that came to my mind, sorry if I offended someone :?

Dwarves.

Elves would be nice, but mostly dwarves. Both sexes of dwarves.

Kossith, especially female kossith. Doesn't matter if they are Qunari or not, but a different perspective on the Qun from Sten's would be lovely.

You didn't offend anyone. Some people need to stop beign so oversensitive on this site. You can call them squadmates if you want ;)

I don't mind having 'unlikable' companions in a game, but when a majority of the companions in DA2 were like this, I hope DA3 reverses this trend.

I'd like to see a grizzled vet, guess it'd be kinda like a duncan in bromance form. Wouldn't mind some of them simply refusing to help you with certain things, perhaps have parts of the story where people are busy doing their own thing pushing people to vary up their party loadouts

Wouldn't mind seeing a female kossith who reacts much like Sten to Morrigans advances, though seeing the Qun from a female side of course that could be pretty fun.

Sigrun? Yeah, more Sigrun.

Someone that's not particularly interested in the standard rival/friend system just someone who isn't looking to get close and that's that, someone completely immune to the social butterfly powers of an RPG PC, would be pretty fun.

Let them properly react negatively to decisions we make that goes against said companions personal opinions, such as for example kicking a beggar asking for a silver or whatever.

To YOU. As you can see here, there are plenty of players who like all or some of the DA2 companions, and even non-companion NPCs. There are also those who like none of them.

They could have 20 different companions of varying personality types in DA3. You are not guaranteed to like them all, or even a single one of them. Such is the nature of designing characters. There are entire TV shows, movies, and novels where I haven't liked a single character. It just happens.

I also want followers who have no interest whatsoever in romancing the PC, like Varric and Aveline. I really looked at those two like big bro/sis after a time. <3

Non extremist characters. Somewhat down to earth characters like in Awakening and Origins.

For YOU. This is a little exaggerated but sums up my feelings on the matter. Varric and Aveline were my favorite companions and I appreciated them for the reasons you give, especially Aveline not responding to 'romance' talking options in kind. Her awkward relationship quests with Hawke helping her out is one of my favorite parts of DA2.

By no means am I saying I hate all the characters in DA2. IMO, they just didn't hold up to the characters from DA:O in comparison. This farewell scene before the final push in DA:O offers a view to what I appreciated so much about the journey I took with them in the game. This type of scene is not uncommon in Bioware games. DA2 also had one and its not that it was bad, it was that DA:O's was so good.

I would like them to actually react to you being a blood mage.  I kept thinking that Anders should say something about you using blood magic... or having been a blood mage himself. Heh.  Or, just your companions showing deeper emotions towards actions you take in the game.  You have some quests here and there that get a reaction, but I think someone should say something about me picking dead bodies up and dumping them down a well. @BouncyFrag
I love the picture with Anders! Image IPB Gave me the giggles.

LOL! I once didn't finish the quest of collecting and dumping the bodies in DA:O and must have carried them around with me for the entire game. I guess Wynee must have had a sordid past since none of this seemed to bother her. I hope my Warden made Shale carry them around for the lulz.

The first time I did that quest it gave me the giggles.  Here I was, dumping a body into a well, and all three of my companions are standing behind me just staring. Image IPB  Their faces even followed my movements as I was pushing the corpse down.  It was just comical for me to think that everyone was completely okay with that.  Definitely would have been an awkward moment for me!  Oh man!  Your camp must have been smelly! -Good Character Storyline, with a variety of Conversation topics. I want character that has more than one interest.
-Romantic Subplots that don't feel stuck on, generally the same, and not very well thought out.
-More than one or two gifts.
-Some serious conversations, some not so serious. To show they actually have lives and interactions with the PC and that aren't always so one-dimensional(a la Alistair, maybe?).
-A mentor companion.
