Well Red Lyrium doesn't have to drive the story, but it could still be present. Templars or mages or another faction entirely might be trying to acquire some, in order to get an edge on the other participants in the continent-wide conflict.

Varric might have a shard, depending on how Act III unfolded.

I want answers. DA2 was kinda bull in that regard, practically no exposition except a codex entry about the Primeval Thaig.

But doesn't "red lyrium", which no one has seen before, from a thaig below the Deep Roads that wasn't supposed to exist, unackknoedged by the dwarves, filled with strange, magical artifacts and idols instead of Paragons deserves a little more "story" that just a weapon for the Templars.

Even the First Warden is interested in the thaig, and is using the Grey Wardens to discourage exploration by others so they can explore it.

Seems like an awesome story that may get crushed under Mage/Templar :( (because I really want to hear more!)

Well, sure, but that can all still be explored.

Andraste's Ashes and the Anvil of the Void were not driving forces behind DA:O's plot, but they still got enough screentime that I think I can confidently say that they were adequately explored.

And I suspect that the Mage/Templar war is going to be pushed into the background, and that the main focus of the plot will be something else entirely.
