hey so I'm making this because I noticed that most of the tactical advice given in this forum has to do with character builds and understanding each character's strengths and weaknesses, which is of course pinnacle to affective gameplay, but I thought something more was valuable to mention. One of the things I absolutely fkin love about this game is how i found that actual tactical observation and placement of units within the game makes a huge difference in affective gameplay. Knowing how to toy with the enemy in how you lure them into a place where you have the advantage can annihilate even the toughest of enemies. so let me tell you my strategy, it's simple. ISOLATE, that's it. 60% of the time dungeons are configured in a way that let's you get a good look at your enemies before they see you and than slowly move forward in a way that let's only a few of them see you at once. If they see you long enough than that small portion of a larger group will break off, making it easier for you to pick away at what might have been a huge group of enemies.
Granted there are situation when this isn't possible like when a group notices you as a whole or when you have a boss battle where they have lackeys like with Kolgrim, Uldred, or the Kitty demon when you get Shale. For these situations I tell you that a mage is your best friend. Just cast forcefield on the biggest threat to buy some time to get rid of the lackeys and make the battle as a whole less strenuous.
There may come a time when your characters have leveled enough to make them tanks against any group no matter how big or small, but believe me, until then, this strategy WORKS.
I know I'v gone on too long but let me leave you with two experiences I had with the gameplay that I'm particularly proud of that illustrate this technique. First of all keep in mind that I'm playing this game at hard difficulty not normal I go all the way with my gaming. My first scenario was with the redcliffe village battle when you have to fend of the horde of zombies coming from the lake and castle. Now the first half of that battle is basically a cake walk because your stationed at the pass with ser Perth's knights and I honestly think those knights are invincible. All I had to do was walk into the pass lure the zombies out and my dudes with the knights just mow over them. At the second part though, you have to help the villager fend off the zombies at the chantry and these dudes not only die, they die faster than I could believe. I fireball and charge in but everyone keeps dieing from the sheer mass of walking corpses. It was about twenty minutes and five attempts later that I thought to myself, "wait a minute I lured the zombies at the pass to the knights why can't I do it with these guys." You see the reason I didn't think of it before is because the distance between the chantry and the pass is so long that I figured it was stupid and would take hours. It did take hours but it was not stupid. Basically everyone in my group had died except for the character I built who was still a puny little mage but bit by bit the horde began to go down in size. I just went back and forth gettin in the line of sight of two or three zombies at once, and those freaking awesome knights were glad to do all the work. two hours later victory is mine.
the second experience was with the gauntlet when I had to take on the mirror image of my own group. Now I've looked at walkthroughs and forums and they seemed to think that these guys were supposed to be even matched with my group but I think that couldn't be further from the truth (but then everyone in my group also had at least five injuries from getting to the friggin gauntlet). I honestly think it took me an hour before I pegged down a strategy that works with this one. What I ended up doing was actuall sacrificing Sten, and made sure that he walked in there alone and got to a corner before he died. You see even though bosses will move back to their original position when you try to lure them away, these guys didn't so they were all cramped in a corner and when I had alistaire tip toe in as slow as he could, he would only get into the line of vision of one person at any one time. When one of them finally noticed him, that one person would go charging after him alone, at which point I'd make Alistaire run back to my group who had retreated far away and they would all work together to take down one person at once, virtually gang raping them. Then he'd tiptoe back and get another until they were all taken out.
You might think it's a dumb strategy but it works and we'll see what you do when you've become frustrated at you're forty seventh attempt at a battle that just won't go your way.
P.S. I really am sorry about the length but I felt it was valuable advice, seeing as how it's saved my ass dozens of times.
