Maybe it's just my computer, but everytime I try to make a character with dark skin it looks like poo.  It's like their skin is turning an awful sickly grey blue color rather then getting darker.  I'd prefer some warmer dark tones.  Also even though my actual character has somewhat dark skin, my portrait looks really pale...

I've heard others complain that it's hard to have really pale skin too, and I tried it and felt somewhat similarly.  There's just not enough skin tone options in my opinion :(  And only two or three of them look good, the others make the character look ill...

Also the darker the tone gets the more splotchy their skin looks. This doesn't seem to be a problem with lighter skin tones...

I will punt a puppy out the window and ask can we change it this late?

Darker skin tones do look ashy and paler skin tones look almost greenish in hue. But it doesn't bother me thus far because I tend to create characters that fit the setting, and the lady to the left looks like she may have a smidgen of Rivvaini blood, but is still predominantly Fereldan- which lore wise has white people.

I have sympathy for anyone trying to create other characters though.

They appear good quality when I tested it. However there could be darker skin tone options.

Didn't you know? Black people in Thedas are actually the dunmer from Elder Scrolls.

I don't think they're that bad--look at the job someone did on this: http://i14.photobuck...uelljackson.jpg

From the celebrity likeness thread. Looks great, imo. Maybe play with the complexion slider in addition to skin tone? Also, blush makes a difference in the "sickly" department.

I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with some people having to put lower graphics settings?  Not only does that example have way better skin tone then I was able to achieve (even with the complexion slider), but it looks a lot more detailed...  Maybe the lower quality textures are causing skin tones to look bad?  I'll manually fudge with my settings and see if that helps...

Hm, I think it looks pretty good, and my computer is just middle range.

It's also the lighting on the portrait and character inventory page that screw with it.

This has been bugging me as well. Theres exactly 1 skintone that looks caucasian, and it's the most pale one. After that you have a fairly good latino tan, followed by asian and then it gets bad. 4-5 skin tones that look like, well...blue-blackish paint, but nothing like a natural skin colour.

Samuel Jacksons Model above looks like hes a south american guy with helluva tan and his portrait looks like his skin is some sort of brownish purple...
Overall, only very few of the skin colours strike me as natural looking

There's a big discrepancy in how the 3D model appears in the 'build room' and what it looks like in the portrait. the Larger 3D model is washed with yellow light but the portrait is lit with white light. Samuel looks quite red/blue on both my monitors.

I don't doubt you'll see custom palettes show up on some nwvault like service as they did with neverwinter nights 2.

Ok, my graphics had been on the absolute lowest settings, I switched them to the absolute highest. The splotchiness issue went away with dark skin tones, and they looked a little bit better. I still think they're extremely blue/purple though. And the portrait still doesn't accurately reflect the character's skin tone.

LOL.  The sad thing is the blue coloring is so bad I probably could make a really great looking dunmer :)

Hmm. Do you suppose it could be graphic card/spec issues, too, that may be putting off the skin tones? I have a Nvidia GTX 295.

Edit:  But yes, I noticed on elves and humans, I think, that the darkest skin setting has them with an undertone of purple in their skin.  I try to stay away from the darkest setting for them.

Ok this is just weird. I went and edited my character with my graphics settings turned all the way up. I didn't mess with the skin tone, just changed the eye color. I reuploaded the character. Suddenly my avatar actually has dark skin like the character instead of being super pale. WTF. I can understand it looking different in the creator, but how do my graphic settings effect the image that's uploaded??

It's like taking a screenshot of your portrait without the background. Your graphic settings will affect your avatar.

Yeah I'm figuring that out... still kind of strange to me, but I guess it makes sense.  Although I like the new skin tone, I actually kind of liked the less detailed features better.  Oh well, can't have everything I guess ;)

Actually, QuanziZ, I agree about the less detailed features. The faces look smoother with lower graphical settings and I prefer it.

I think it could be your graphical setttings. I thought the skin tones were great..especially for black characters. Black is hardly ever done correctly and this time I thought they actually looked like black people (Like the Samuel Jackson example up above).

I run at full graphic settings so I'm guessing at lowered settings the colors are getting washed out or misrepresented?

I wonder if it is my graphics too. The darker skin tones don't look all that great on my computer.

I think the dark skin tones look fine -- at least on the actual character. On the portrait, they turn into a weird shade of washed-out grayish purple which looks odd to say the least. Shame about portraits losing so much color detail. :(
