To be fair, I made that title before I actually typed anything. I had no idea how short it would end up being.

Then laziness kicked in, and I didn't get around to changing the title.

Wow, that was really well thought out but I'm sure people will still be saying "Why balance?" even after reading this. Nice job Dullahans!

But i came to a question, why dont also buff/nerf an enemy for the sake of the difficulty? (like they did with "minibosses" ignoring certain types of bonuses (like the Armor Piercing attachment))

Nerfing exists because the players that figure out a set up that fit them start bragging about it with videos across the forums and everyone tries to imitate it causing inflation on the stats so BioWare nerfs it. Nothing more and nothing less.

So before Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, nerfing didn't excist.

I see... Now zell me avout your mother.

My problem with the devs is that instead of balancing things properly before release they instead release things to the masses and then balance afterwards. Inadvertantly, they have come to rely on their live update system as a crutch. The live update also screws us gamers. We cannot simply undo their changes  (remove DLC) and enjoy the base game.

Many things were obviously broken when it was released (like Turian Ghost stimpack).

I do give them credit for supporting the game and having the passion to add so many wonderful characters. But they have lost their vision. We have went from cover based shooter to run around in circles and hunting spawns

* Note game is still fun. Don't mean to be such a major hater.  Nothing else like it. Great 1st attempt at Multiplayer

[edit2] Great thread and original post though. I thank you :wizard:

That's got less to do with balance changes and more to do with player-side power creep, for two reasons. The first is that grenades were nearly worthless at first - because multiplayer heroes have two fewer base grenades than Shepard and the single player henchmen. (1 as compared to 3) This was fixed, by adding grenade gear and classes like the Demolisher, as well as new grenade types - you still can run dry on grenades quite easily, but now there's reasonable leeway.

Plus, the playerbase is gaining strength. People are unlocking more stuff to do more damage with - this is the main reason why the asari Adept was the go-to class in the demo and release days - her damage was independent of weaponry, and the multiplayer slips closer to the single player, in terms of powers supporting weapons, because everyone has weapons.

And besides, who's to say spawn hunting wasn't the original vision, and over-the-top cover hugging was the mistake? :P

N7Kopper you make good points. Perhaps spawn hunting was the goal. But if that's the case in my humble, humble opinion they missed that mark slightly due to akward controls. On console (XBL), sprinting will often accidently land me in cover. The controls do not aid us in spawn hunting. Plus the AI dudes immediately target us soon as they spawn. So if u dont get that missile off asap you will be dead. Just seems like they accidently evolved into spawn point hunts

edit- fix typing

I need to sift through this thread somemore. I like this point of view I feel the same. I sort of cringe when I see some new video because nerfs seem to always follow hot on their trail :crying:

We nerf because we allow it, and you will like it because we demand it.

Nonsense, Google needs to just keep changing YouTube's layout every 10 minutes.

Oh wait...

Yes it's like Google has coke fuelled network execs working for it. They won't settle on one idea.

Weird thing is, Google Chrome can't even handle the new layout on my laptop for some reason.

How ironic.

Your asking for perfection before releasing content is a little silly.  They are on a budget and while unlimited development time and money would lead to a higher quality released product, they are doing the best they can with the resources they have.

They also have to keep releases coming in a timely manner to keep players interested and around.

I personally don't care about the balance changes they make, if I don't like a decision I shift to playing a different kit or use a different weapon, in many ways it makes the game more fun because of the variety.

OP - I've heard you complaining about the reegar being way to overpowered in another forum and about it needing to be nerfed. Myself I tried it when I first got it and couldn't stand it; since it had this stupid delay before it started spewing its electrical stream out, plus its duration and range were both way too short (to be of any value on levels above bronze). Now I have it up to level VIII so I'm thinking I'd better give it another try to see what you're talking about before they end up nerfing it.

Nice explanation for why nerfing / buffing is done. If people would just be willing to spend more time experimenting and figuring things out for themselves instead of immediately googling for how to create the most effective builds / strategies it would reduce the need for changing game play characteristics since player effectiveness would build more based on their own experiences rather than mimicking and building on other peoples' experience.

Just my 2 cents

I think you have me confused with Annomander. I said it should NOT be nerfed on the grounds that it's a shotgun that shoots lightning bolts.

Plus, it's a pretty lackluster weapon against the one thing in the game (Armor) that really stands as much of a threat. So much fun, though (and very practical against anything that isn't armored). Definitely give it another shot.

That's exactly my stance. As an example, I absolutely love the Turian Havoc playstyle. He's such a fun character to use. But I can do so much better with my Ghost, who I don't find nearly as fun. I mean, granted, Infiltrators are Infiltrators, but the Human, Turian, and Destroyer Soldiers all have their own merits that not even an Infiltrator has access to. (And that's Soldiers, mind you. A lot of other kits from different classes have their own merits that make them plenty useful) The Havoc basically just has rushing into a spot where he's almost certain to die, in exchange for less than 1/3 the damage boost that Tactical Cloak offers (not even including Rank 6). How is that fair?

Hey look, someone that can't be bothered to make an actual argument to counter the OP and instead makes a passive aggressive comment.

TY Interwebz god bless you.

@Dullahans; I disagree with you about the Reegar. It may not do its full damage to armor, but with ammo powers it can totally trivialize all enemies, regardless of protection. Not sure who first likened using the Reegar to playing a point and click adventure where the only option is 'click on enemy to kill' (StarDusk? Godless Paladin?) but I think its an accurate assessment. I hate using the Reegar because it almost feels like I'm cheating.
