I started at BioWare in August 2010 as a contract employee and was hired as a full time Senior Quality Assurance Tester a year later.
Since you are QA, I'm curious if you've read any of the "tales" over at The Trenches. From reading those, it sounds like working for a game developer, at least on the QA end, is one of the most underappreciated, painful, frustrating and explotitive jobs in the world. Also, it seems like most game companies (development and publishing side) are run by psychopaths.
I realize that those stories mainly only draw upon the bad, and people are way more apt to complain then to compliment (e.g. BSN...), but I'm still curoius on your take on the industry, as presented above.
Edit: I guess a little more precisely, are the horror stories related in those tales rare? uncommon? common? I'd assume rare, but eh, you never know.
Thanks!
Undoubtably there are horror stories, there is some places that QA is treated as second class and development team has the mentality that QA just there to ruin all their hard work.
BioWare treats our QA very well, we talk to designers on a daily basis, we go to social gather, and we sit with them. A lot of people have come from a QA background at BioWare at some point so they appreciate what it is like.
So at BioWare they are essentially nonexistent out in the industry I would say uncommon/common
