I started at BioWare in August 2010 as a contract employee and was hired as a full time Senior Quality Assurance Tester a year later.

Since you are QA, I'm curious if you've read any of the "tales" over at The Trenches.  From reading those, it sounds like working for a game developer, at least on the QA end, is one of the most underappreciated, painful, frustrating and explotitive jobs in the world.  Also, it seems like most game companies (development and publishing side) are run by psychopaths.

I realize that those stories mainly only draw upon the bad, and people are way more apt to complain then to compliment (e.g. BSN...), but I'm still curoius on your take on the industry, as presented above.

Edit: I guess a little more precisely, are the horror stories related in those tales rare? uncommon? common?  I'd assume rare, but eh, you never know.

Thanks!

Undoubtably there are horror stories, there is some places that QA is treated as second class and development team has the mentality that QA just there to ruin all their hard work.

BioWare treats our QA very well, we talk to designers on a daily basis, we go to social gather, and we sit with them. A lot of people have come from a QA background at BioWare at some point so they appreciate what it is like.

So at BioWare they are essentially nonexistent out in the industry I would say uncommon/common

Right then Bryan, seeing as one of your favorite games is final fantasy tactics... How on EARTH am I supposed to beat Belias after facing Weigarf one-on-one in chapter 3? The failures are driving me insane!

I typically had a time mage, a geomancer, and I cant remember if you had TG Cid/Engineer by that point or not

1. Chloe
2. I would say performance would be a question mark, people would complain we just wanted to use their medi-gel
3. Fist bump unless it is meeting someone for the first time/someone way older than me

On point, are you guys planning to add anymore enemies to the reaper faction? I know you guys just added the collectors but they are their own faction.

Seems now the reaper faction is getting the short end of the stick.

Would require a new DLC, and since that is a product that may or may not exist I will not comment

@Bryan: why the trend to remove user-mapped controls in games?

Especially consoles, as in PS2/Xbox1 days it was common to allow users to custom map controls to any controller button.
It is very rare in current console games to allow this, and only preset mappings are given.

Specific to ME3, if one runs a build with zero in a power, often it'd be more convenient to have the two remaining powers on the shoulder buttons, instead of leaving one on a face button.
Then there's the problem that identical powers across characters are on inconsistent buttons: warp and Reave for example.

If you have any feedback loop to design, it'd be nice for an update to ME3 or consideration into unreleased Bioware games.

I dont know for certain, and this isnt part of the thing that I worked on for development or anything. From my understanding have wrong button call outs in manual/during gameplay can be a potential cert failing issue.

Have you noticed that it is now easier to get a kill streak with inferno grenades than with the missile launcher we all carry around?

Depends on the difficulty and wave #

OK

So, do you realize that the missle launcher we now have pales in comparison to the one we had before the last patch?

Also, do you look forward to the day when Canada is absorbed into the United States?

I am not certain

This will not happen in my lifetime

What did you study and how did you become part of BW?

Computer Engineer (Software option)

My best friend since I was 3 works here as a programmer so he was a reference, I also knew Reid Buckmaster (you would have seen him from some conferences) from HS, and a designer on DA from high school.

But basically my education is what got my foot in the door.

Hi Bryan!

I have some questions:

1. I read you test builds and stuff like that, have you had in hands a build that wasn't released because it was too powerful?, if it is the case, how it was?

2. Have you have fun creating characters with skills only to see how powerful they can be?, which powers if the answer is yes?

3. your favorite car brand?

4. Do you think about add a voice to the Glacier Hazard. You know, the voice of a little kid scared and with pain saying "mommy" ?

5. What kind of movies do you like?

6. Age Of Empires or Total War saga?

7. As a fan of the game, how would be a hazard created by you?

1. You misinterupt what I mean when I say build, to me a build is what your xbox/ps3/pc game disc is a collection of all the files, and the executable
2. I dont do this kind of work
3. McLaren F1/P1 but more realistic Hyundai Genesis (Drive a Tiberon)
4. That wouldnt fit the theme imo
5. All over the map
6. Dont play either
7. Sorry I dont have that creativity in me

Hey Bryan,

Country Style or Tim Hortons. Also Double-Double or Trip-Trip? XL or L?

Also can I work for you guys?? What did you do to get started and what qualifications or skills did you need to do what it is you do? And no I don't mean bowstaff skills, nunchuk skills, or computer hacking skills (Napoleon Dynamite ref. for the uninitiated)

We dont have country style in Edmonton
Also neither of those, as I dont drink coffee.

You can certainly apply. We look for people who are passionate about games, have a good understand of what a game is, someone who doesnt think that QA is just a stepping stone to get into another department, and understands that this is actually hard work. And of course the kind of personalty that would be fun to be around.
