That is why I guessed, and it goes without saying my, as anyone else's, guess can be wrong :) Do not take it too personally, it is not. I do not even think there is anything wrong with RP or min-maxing.

Personally, not that anyone cares but .., after 300+ hours clogged on the game I am not sure what is RP and what min-maxing is, and it is not an issue to me. I play the way I want and if someone labels it this or that way I could care less, well except for a remark here and there.

Optimal, in my understanding, mean getting most out of the game - including exp - thus I consider the route I described as optimal. Dunno if it is true, but some claimed the belt from Wonder of Thedas will give almost a level by the end of the game as there are plenty of codex entries and +50% exp gain from them is significant. Following the route described it is possible to "ding" level 10 just before fighting Uldred which can, but does not have to, make a difference.

Another reason to go to Denerim first is to pick up quests and/or supplies, whether is optimal or not.

On my new play through I went from Lothering to get Shale. Then I did wardens keep because I stumbled across the Star metal early. Did a few things in Denerim and a couple quests etc. Right now I am locked in the mages tower getting ready to go into the Fade. I will probably hit Redcliff and do Urn of Sacred Ashes next as I have already been investigating about brother Genitivi's disappearance.
