Having equipped my mabari with mabari crunch, whenever I go to use it the dialogue comes up on screen but nothing happens - the amount of the item remains unchanged and the hound is not healed. I even tried putting this in my character's inventory in case he was expected to feed the dog but it is grayed out (as you would expect). Standard healing poultices and injury kits work ok on the hound. It appears to be the same for all my characters who have mabari in their party
I then checked my mabari's stats because he didn't seem to be pulling his weight and confirmed what I had begun to suspect - that despite being with this character since the beginning of the adventure the dog has done no damage whatsover and to all intents and purposes doesn't interact with the game at all apart from taking damage. It also seems that enemy mabari are equally  impotent.
My version of DAO is fully patched and I haven't spotted any other anomalies can anyone suggest what might be causing this?
