Hi

Is there a way for me to backup my DLC so that I can uninstall the game and then reinstall it at a later stage, without having to download it again?  I want to free up space for Mass Effect 2.

Also, what if I get a new pc and install Dragon Age on it, can I move the DLC over, or do I need to download it?

Thanks
Robert

There is an folder in My Documents\\Bioware\\Dragon Age\\Addins. Looks like it contains the DLCs. So you should be able to backup them.

Maybe you need other files in My Documents\\Bioware\\Dragon Age too. If you can afford, you should backup the whole folder (you may want to trash some characters and save games in the Characters subfolders first.

Moving the whole folder onto another PC may help to avoid downloading the DLC on that PC again.

Thanks for the info Ingthar.

I would like a more official voice on this though... downloading in this country is pretty expensive, so I want to make sure that it is possible to back it up before I consider uninstalling the game. There might be registry entries and such things. Basically I want to know if I can backup if I uninstall, and can I transfer the backups to another pc if I buy a new one. Or do either of those require me to download again.

Thanks

I have tried to copy that dragon age folder, it hasn't worked for me, there doesn't seem to be a clear file/folder that you can distinguish as a certain DLC content, such as Warden's Keep.

I would just copy over the entire Documents\\Dragonage folder. That will get you all of your characters also. I copied that folder from my desktop to my notebook and had everything make the trip except my unlocked specializations. You do have to login to authorize the DLC.

If you don't want to move all of that you can copy the AddIns folder. You also have to copy the AddIns.xml file in Settings. You could copy individual folders from AddIns, but the folder have funny names, and the little ones aren't big enough to matter.

Sorry, but having done some "research" into this (the reason given at the end), I think unfortunately it's quite more complicated than what you outline here.

You are correct that you need to backup the AddIns folder and the AddIns.xml, but I found that you also need to copy the Offers folder and manifest.xml to get the "advanced" DLC (as of now Stone Prisoner and Wardens' Keep, but will most likely also pertain to RtO) to work - amongst other things!
Pure item mods (Blood Dragon Armor, for example) just requires that the files exist in the AddIns folder and that AddIns.xml is correct, though (at least it seems so to me).

I strongly recommend simply taking a backup of the entire my docs\\bioware folder once you have installed the game (including any patches and DLC), and creating a new backup after each DLC you install. That's what I do, though I overwrite the previous backup with the new once I'm more or less shure that the new DLC hasn't caused any problems.
I'll probably buy the retail expansion when it's out (unless I have reached the age of retirement first :D), but I won't buy any more DLC until it is possible to install the "advanced" DLC by downloading the .dazip file you need and install it manually using the daupdater.exe - including that the program installs the DLC correctly, so that I don't get any "you are unauthorized to use this!" if I were to change my mind and log in to the DA servers.

The DLC system is as I'm writing this a complete mess - it's the result of a paranoid delusion that all players are potential software pirates and at the same time a wish from EA or Bioware to monitor their players' computers.
I have no wish to participate in software piracy, but I won't let EA/Bioware install spyware on my computer either.

It was a desire to circumvent the need for online playing that made me start investigating this - and I did actually get all my DLC to work after reinstalling DA without having to resort to logging into the DA servers. I am quite happy I made a backup of "clean" install when I got the game!

Can't you already just download the Warden's Keep and Stone Prisoner .dazip files and manually install them? I believe many people had to do that to work around the DLC downloading issues and it seemed to work for them. So you could just back them up somewhere for reinstallation later if you had to.

I didn't get that to work no... Truth be told that's what I first tried when I had reinstalled - great was my surprise (and dismay!) when I found that Stone Prisoner and Wardens' Keep showed as installed in the DLC menu, but that their quest entries didn't fire as they should when starting/loading a game. "Something is clearly wrong!" he thought.... :D

My relief when I remembered I had made a "clean" backup was indescribable.
I have learnt my lesson playing modded versions of BGII, and know the value of backing up important files when installing mods - be they official or custom. Heh. ;)

EDIT: I suspect that some get it to work because their directory/file structure and .xml files are properly configured already when they actually install it - as it is said in the DLC help thread, "you actually need to own these to get them to work" or some such... I suspect that those that are unable to actually download it using the DLC menu or DLC in-game DLC management system still get their .xml files and directory structures created correctly by the DLC management system (or perhaps it's actually a program on the server that does it?) - and so, when they install the files manually, everything is as if they had downloaded and installed it from within the game.

What Kepha suggests works for sure.  And you don't need to have any XML files ready for them or whatever. You can use the DLC DAZIP on complete virgin installation and they will work correctly.

But what you may be did not do after reinstalling, is login to authenticate the DLC online to unlock them, in which case they are not activated causing the problem you describe.

Ok perfect but, where did she get those links from? And they sure look official links! In a way, is something like that people here are looking for! Some way to have a backup of the DLCs they've paid for, not having to necessarily rely on a server.

But a good backup tool or a way to backup your profile (with savegames and DLCs) would be handy to.
