If you double click the Dragon Age service a new windows should appear. Can you post here and verify that the path is correct? It's right under the description... my windows is french right now so I'm not sure of the exact wording.
You should get something like
C:\\some kind of path\\daupdater.exe
Make sure the path you see there is indeed where the service is looking for the .exe file in that path.

I can't remember by heart but when you double click the service, do you have an option to run it as an administrator?
If not you could try going into the bin_ship folder, right clicking DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe and check the Run as Administrator box under the ... Security Tab.
Sucks not having Vista or Windows 7 at work. I hope I'm not confusing you too much.

Could you try the following?
1. Click Start, type "services.msc" and hit enter.
2. Verify that "Dragon Age: Origins Updater" is listed. (by default everything should be listed in alphabetical order)
If the services is NOT listed then yes, the steps I noted previously should install the service for you. If the service IS listed then the steps I posted will not help you as the service is already present and you will need to take some additional steps.
Also - it might be beneficial if you let us know how you got Dragon Age? Do you have the discs, or did you get it through Steam/Impulse/EA Store/Direct2Drive/etc?

ShPhoenix, can you tell me what you see as the path when you check the Dragon Age service?

I followed his information and found I didn't have the updater service running, try running it and it's not installed. So I install the updater service with installutil.exe (fellow on the first page also tells you how to do this if you don't know where it's at), Service gets installed, I start it manually, load the game, login, boom all my DLC is now downloading.
This thread needs to be stickied and EA's techs need a bookmark too it.
Awesome troubleshooting OP.
Edit, BTW I'm on Vista Ultimate 64

"Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A Windows Service must first be installed (using installutil.exe) and then started with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Administrative toll or the NET START command." (((This is the samething it tells me whether I run as Admin or not)))
So I thought maybe if I used your cmd to install it (again?) it would sort of fix itself.

I installed it off to my D: so it's:
"D:\\Games\\Dragon Age Origins\\bin_ship\\daupdatersvc.service.exe"

Those without the service installed can do the following to install it:
1. Open up an Administrative Command Prompt
- Click Start -> type "cmd" -> Right Click on "cmd.exe" and choose "Run As Administrator"
2. Navigate to your Windows directory (usually C:\\\\Windows), and then from there go to the Microsoft.NET\\\\Framework\\\\v2.0.50727 directory.
- ie, C:\\\\Windows\\\\Microsoft.NET\\\\Framework\\\\v2.0.50727
3. Enter the following command:
installutil.exe "Path to daupdatersvc.service.exe"
4. Assuming no problems with the installation you can start the service and everything should hopefully be good.
Yup did that myself earlier and it worked... it seems Steam/Impulse do not always - if at all - register the service for DO update.
Install it, start it and play it
Hope it works for the rest of you guys!

Ah ok. I've already tried going to the physical service and running it as Admin, which did not work. The service itself is already listed, so I guess I was wrong about the cmd steps working. The reason I thought it would work is this: When I try to start the daupdatersvc.service.exe from the program folder I get this error message (Remember that the service is already listed in the Services list, but will not start)
"Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A Windows Service must first be installed (using installutil.exe) and then started with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Administrative toll or the NET START command." (((This is the samething it tells me whether I run as Admin or not)))

Ok - I think I sort of get what's going on.
Running the daupdatersvc.service.exe shouldn't actually do anything but show you that message (I just tried it).
I don't know why it won't start for you though. It sounds like you might have to get Windows to uninstall the service and then reinstall it manually (I read somewhere on some forum that uninstalling Dragon Age apparently causes some grief with the updater so I wouldn't necessarily try that yet)...
I'll have to look up on how to do this though as I don't normally deal with services...

First off, thanks Phoenix.
Just to make sure. The Error 193: 0xc1 came when you tried starting the service manually by locating the Dragon Age service in the list and either right clicking Start or double clicking the service and then clicking the Start button. Right?
If yes. Did you uinstall and reinstall the game for some reason?
Either way I think we'd need to desinstall that service and follow Pheonix instructions on how to reinstall the Dragon Age service.
Edit : hahaha Phoenix and I basically said the same thing!
Edit2 : To uninstall the serice, you follow the same instructions Phoenix did but instead of
installutil.exe "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
do
installutil.exe /u "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"

Ok - apparently this is pretty straight forward to UNINSTALL the service.
1. Click Start, type "cmd", then right-click "cmd.exe" and choose "Run As Administrator"
2. Navigate to C:\\Windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v2.0.50727
3. Run the following command:
installutil.exe /u "Path-To-daupdatersvc.service.exe"
At this point the service should be uninstalled. You can now attempt to re-install it using the following command:
installutil.exe "Path-To-daupdatersvc.service.exe"
Now try running the following command from the same command prompt window:
"net start DAUpdaterSvc"
Hopefully that will fix the problem. If it doesn't then there is another underlying problem going on.

Let me combine my edit and this post (that we posted at the same time)
1. Click Start, type "cmd", then right-click "cmd.exe" and choose "Run As Administrator"
2. Navigate to C:\\\\Windows\\\\Microsoft.NET\\\\Framework\\\\v2.0.50727

4. Run the following command :
installutil.exe "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
5. Try the game.
6. If it still doesn't work, try starting the service manually from the Services list where you previously got the error.
7. Try the game again.

This is where I was having my issue previous. I don't know how to follow the second step, and I don't understand why I can't just run cmd instead of searching for it and then running? I mean if i just bring up the cmd through Run it has administrator privileges. I digress, could you explain step two a bit more?

I needed to upgrade my .NET framework from v1 to v2. I was then able to manually start to updater.

Instead of navigating to the folder with DOS commands you could try this :
1.) Locate normally with Windows Explorer (or a search on your system) the file installutil.exe
2.) Right click the file and select COPY
3.) Locate the same way your installation folder for the game (in your case C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\Dragon Age\\\\bin_ship\\)
4.) Right click and select PASTE inside that bin_ship folder
5.) Go in the bin_ship folder and make sure the installui.exe file is in there.
6.) Follow my instructions at the start of this post to run the administrator command prompt (cmd)
7.) type this : cd C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\
8.) type : installutil.exe /u DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe and press enter
9.) type : installutil.exe DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe and press enter
10.) try the game
11.) if it doesn't work try to manually start the service in the Services window and try the game again
Sorry for the formatting, i'm late to an appointment. Will format this and help you more a little bit later.

I find it easier to do this stuff through command line so that you can see the output - good or bad - making sense or not. This is because installutil is essentially a command line tool.
Step 2 works like this:
When you run CMD.EXE as an Administrator by default it should take you to your Windows\\System32 directory. The following commands should look like this:
cd..
cd Microsoft.NET
cd Framework
cd v2.0.50727
installutil /u "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
installutil "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
net start DAUpdaterSvc
If you don't want to try command line you can try executing the following command through Run and see if it works:
C:\\Windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v2.0.50727\\installutil.exe /u "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
Then:
C:\\Windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v2.0.50727\\installutil.exe "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe"
Finally:
net start DAUpdaterSvc
Note: I do not believe that Windows 7 will execute Run tasks as administrative commands with UAC enabled - that's why I suggest using Command Prompt.
