at first i was like okay thats one less boy in the world, but after playing for a while and the boy didnt go away in the forgotten memory box i started wishing for a renegade shep that would be like:
Child: everyones dying
Shepard: cmon you need to get out of there...take my hand
Child: you cant help me
Shepard: then i shall show you mercy instead *pulls out the handgun and fires

The unskippable dream sequences, however, quickly grated on my nerves.

It's not so much the kid you have to care about but what he represents. Which is all the people that Shepard can't save. When you look at the kid, don't think about him as a specific person but think of him as the embodiment of the people you do care about. He's just an avatar, a face upon which Shepard projects the lives of everyone in the galaxy. Don't get too caught up in the kid as a singular person or individual.
That's what I think anyway.
This.
Plus all the voice overs of the dead characters people here are saying they do care about, and I think the kid is a very well done symbol for all the deaths weighing on Shep's mind.

I really couldnt care less about anyone cept my crew. (and only a few of those). My shep was alliance. So what? It got him off the streets. /shrug
Really all this "FEEL THIS!!!" is just ridiculous. Have you guys even heard of Biowares "agreement"? It basically says that ME3 is **** since they threw it out in favour of "carbon copy shepard".

And what about a Shepard that wouldn't cry over Thane? They get screwed over if you have a crying scene.
No, Make it a choice; an option.
Garrus: "Shepard... Thane's death... Are you ok?"
Shepard: -> "I loved him."
-> "No."
-> "I'm fine Garrus."
"I loved him" results in Shepard breaking down a sobbing.
"No." gives Shepard signs that she cares but she's holding back her emotions.
"I'm fine" shows a Shepard that cared very little for Thane's death.

As much as I loved Anderson, that actually would have been an awesome idea. If they wanted the player to sit back and actually feel sad, they should have had a character that was close with Shepard die instead of that stupid kid. If Anderson actually died in the beginning, I would have sincerely felt a little depressed. It also would have set the dark and hopeless mood that Bioware was aiming to achieve.Ledgend1221 wrote...

Agreed. It also would have kept in line with Bioware tradition of redshirts in the opening sequence.skate4tacos96 wrote...

Not some random kid who I gave NO CARE for.

Did I care? ...Erm, not reeeaaally... The kid had two choices: take his chances crawling through the vents, or take the hand of the famous Commander Shepard. The kid chose his fate.
When every single dream showcased Shepard's *supposed* guilt in this matter, that's when he became annoying. The Catalyst taking his image was just a final insult.

Just like in real life, kids make everything worse.
