Origins, KOTOR, and ME2 had the best characters in my opinion. That doesn't mean I didn't like their other games. In fact there hasn't been a BioWare game with bad or uninteresting companions.

Those are my top three as well. The Jade Empire cast was also pretty fun. Henpecked Hou was a refreshing change of pace, especially.

Characters are important, I agree.

DA2's characters, while not as great as DAO's for me, were very good, while DA2 overall wasn't.

So good characters are not enough to salvage a "just average" game in terms of plot, quests, combat, and so on.

Hard to top KotOR's characters for me. But yeah, all the BW games trade on their ability to make characters memorable at the least, and more often than not, likeable or fearful or whatever they're aiming for in each case. The immersion is boosted massively by the fact that it can sometimes feel like you're actually talking to them (rather than just watching a cutscene)

Characters are definitely important...and Bioware usually does a great job here. Viconia and Liara are probably my favorite game characters ever.

ME2 was the only Bioware game where I didn't really care about the cast. The squadmates felt disconnected from the plot, and every character has his/her 15 minutes of fame before you could forget him/her (unless you romanced the squaddie).

I think you've got it backwards...

ME1's characters > ME2/3's characters

I'll also second the notion of Kotor and Jade Empire's characters being good.

Not to big on many of the DA characters, but I liked Morrigan in DA:O and Merrill and Varric in DA2

For me DA2 had the best characters (even though the game had Fenris). I've never enjoyed the characters in a game that much before (excluding Fenris)

Bioware's greatest strength is making crazy characters. Proof = ME2 and DAO. Crazies, crazies everywhere.

I liked Varric quite a bit. He was lively, interesting, and humorous, how come Hawke couldn't date him? However I didn't really care for the rest of the cast of sorry sod males especially Sebastian who I feel is a virtual character who stole 7 bucks from me.

Isabella was super fun Posted Image

Yeah, she was alright. A bit too "I like sex and I'm sexy sex sex sex." for me but she was a well developed character.

Haha, I like her for that very reason! (Fair enough, nevertheless Posted Image)

Her assets were very valueable indeed.

I loved the DA2 characters precisely because of how polarizing they are. It makes for more interesting interactions and storytelling, even in a meta sense. For example, every time Anders opens his mouth, I want to punch him, hug him, stab him, and kiss him all at once. It's pretty impressive how a bunch of pixels can inspire that jumble of emotions.

Characters should inspire passions, in the player and in other characters. The most forgettable ones are the inoffensive ones.

I'd say Dragon age really is the most memorable adventure I had so:

Companions:
Morrigan,Shale,Leliana,Alistar,Sten,Wynne,Zevran and Loghain for Origins

Carver,Bethany,Isabela,Varric,Aveline,Talis for DA2

Side charathers:

Duncan,Irving,Branka and many many more for Origins

DA2:Mother,gamlen,all of the blooming rose,Bartrand, and more for DA2

Anagonists:

Marjolene was my fav in Origins

Arishock my fav in DA2

Even though DA2 has Varric and Merrill in I have to give it to DA:O purely because of Fenris and Anders. I liked him in Awakenings, didn't like the whiny so-and-so in DA2.

I can't say which game had the better characters because they all had characters I loved.

I've only played DA:O, DA2, and ME3.

Favorites are Alistair, Fenris, Anders, Isabela, Aveline, Kaiden, Vega, and Liara.

There aren't any I hate. Only one from DA:O ... but that maybe because I don't feel like my character can interact properly with those guys. My character doesn't really have a personality in DA:O. But it's easier to see relationships forming between the PC and other characters in DA2 and ME3.

Not sure what any of this has to do with DA3.

I have played DA:O, DA2, ME1, ME2 and ME3 (pretty much all the modern BioWare games) and I have to say all of them had awesome characters.

However there are same bad apples, like Anders. I liked him a lot in Awakening but I thought his character was pretty much killed in DA2. I could say the same thing for Liara in the Mass Effect series. She radically changes a lot for no apparent reason. Stuff like this can annoy me sometimes but I still manage to find something I like in them.

Edit: I also played KOTOR1 and KOTOR2. Both games had really cool and fun characters. I actually thought KOTOR1 had a better package.

Johlee and HK-47 ftw.

I'm going to be that guy who disagrees. Maybe in the past, but with DA2 and ME3, I haven't been a fan of how Bioware writes their characters. In ME3, practically everyone suffered from character assassination, which is one of my main issues with the game aside from the endings. Really, it's like the character writers didn't even play or watch ME2 at all. As for DA2, I generally have to roll with the same exact party because I cannot stand most of the companions.

That's funny. In ME1 you could easily not bother with anyone in your team and still get the same results as someone who took their time with the team.

ME3, everything was a rush and the dialog options were limited down to 2 choices. Typically "tell me a secret" and a "let's keep this professional" choices.

I agree about characters being important - I often find their personalities and interaction with the player plus the wolrd around them just as interesting as the main storyline, if not more.

Ho-we-ver I disagree about DA II taking a step back and found the companions in this game as interesting as the ones in DA: O (some even more).

I didn't have problems with the companions in DA2 (though I don't like how the dialogues with them were available in the game), while I prefer the DAO's group, I enjoyed the DA2's group.
And DA2 has my favourite companion of the DA IP (Varric).

My favorite character in any game is probably Loghian. Mostly cause his character is greatly expanded in Stolen Throne. If I hadn't read that I dont think I'd have understood his character half as well.

After him I probably like... Justice (original, not silly Anders corrupted version). As a very single minded individual who sees the world in black and white he is rather unique. (oddly I hated Anders in DA2)

From a diff game.... Bastilla. She walks a thin line between being an Arrogant Sith hating force user sliding toward the Dark Side and being a goody two-shoes beggar helping Jedi.

This pretty much nails why I play BioWare games and replay them so often.  I think of the characters, and I want to be back around them, in their world.  Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, and KotOR did it best for me.

I hope DA3 has just as amazing characters and doesn't instead try to downplay them or decrease interaction.  If anything, I want more interaction with characters than ever before: more dialogue choices (vs. auto-dialogue), more actions (like Paragon/Renegade interrupts in conversations), more character content, more tailored dialogue (depending on whether you reply to them kindly or rudely, are in a relationship or not, etc.), more outings (the ones in ME3 on the Citadel were pretty fun), etc.  Building this into a story enriches the experience so much.  When we remember things, after all, who was with you can be as important as what happened.  This is what makes games memorable for me, as well.

This times 100.

i agree that it's the characters that make these games, but i'm going to have to disagree with favoring one cast over another.

let me explain...

to me, the only true sin of a character is for them to not be compelling.

they can whine or not, be extreme or moderate, have complex and subtle issues, or glaringly obvious ones. whenever i rank characters, my first criteria is always to rank them from the most compelling to least compelling in terms of their stories, rather than what i liked or didn't like about them.

even my favorite ones don't make the top of the list and my least favorite ones don't always end up on the bottom, when i go by that criteria, btw.

looking at all the characters that i like, I have to say most of them are from bioware.
