This is an intermittent bug generally caused by the Origin Client. Often i'll notice a friend is trying to chat with me using Origin's chat client so i press Shift+F1 to bring up the chat box in game. But often when i do that, Origin freezes the whole game and ME3 stops responding.
So to fix the problem i tried using Ctrl Alt Del and ending ME3 exe and Origin exe from the Task Manager. Then i reboot Origin and open ME3 again, only to have the same problem occur all over again.
The only way to stop Origin repeating the problem once it has occurred is to completely restart my PC. This is a really annoying bug which needs fixed ASAP.

If you're trying to bring up the chat interface during heavy action, yeah it most likely will freeze since it's like trying to suddenly Alt+Tab out. No matter how good your computer, it'll always lock up. The same thing happens in Steam so it's no better. Just try chatting when you're not in battle next time.
